Disney has just joined the ranks of streaming content providers with their new ESPN+ service. Disney has never done anything like this before and it makes sense for them to offer their flagship sports product to the masses like this. I guess they've seen the ESPN numbers dropping on traditional cable networks and need to make up the difference so they can keep paying for all of their exclusive broadcasting rights. Thanks, cagey.

ESPN+ is designed for fanatics who want more sports programing, and for people who cannot find their favorite teams or sports on TV, Disney executives said. The latter includes fans of cricket, rugby, Canadian football or Ivy League sports.

No thanks...the world has enough streaming services. The pie is only so big. At some point the ever-increasing fragmentation in this space is going to backfire.

Programing includes one live Major League Baseball game each day during the regular season,

ESPN+ does not include Monday Night Football or National Basketball Association games that are shown on ESPN’s TV channels. Those are reserved for subscribers of pay TV packages

LOL, now i am not a sports fan, but thats a joke, even to me

This is probably just a test run of the platform they'll use for the Disney movie-streaming service they're going to roll-out to compete with NetFlix.
They can afford to screw up with ESPN, but not with the Disney/Marvel/StarWars crown jewels.

Expecting this to be $12-$15 a month.

Says right in the article - "It costs $4.99 a month, or $49.99 per year".

I agree.

Only $5 but you lose all the regular ESPN stuff like the NBA and NFL games. Think of this one as a supplementary sports channel and not worth $5 to me.
Proabably would be $15+ if it included that. $5 for shit like sport center? No thanks.

The service will carry more than 10,000 live sporting events that are not shown on television, as well as exclusive on-demand programming such as a new documentary about controversial college basketball coach Bobby Knight. ESPN+ is designed for fanatics who want more sports programming, and for people who cannot find their favorite teams or sports on TV, Disney executives said. The latter includes fans of cricket, rugby, Canadian football or Ivy League sports.

Programing includes one live Major League Baseball game each day during the regular season, starting with the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants on Thursday. Customers also will see Major League Soccer games, college sports from 20 U.S. conferences, and boxing and Grand Slam tennis matches that do not air on TV. A daily National Hockey League matchup will be added starting with the 2018-2019 season.

ESPN+ does not include Monday Night Football or National Basketball Association games that are shown on ESPN’s TV channels. Those are reserved for subscribers of pay TV packages, who can stream the live TV lineup through the ESPN app. The redesigned app allows customers to watch up to four streams simultaneously on one screen.

It isn't bad for $5 but my experience with streaming from ESPN servers is that the quality settings are permanently set to automatic and thus it will look like "Night Trap" for half the time.

Night Trap example for the younger generation.

People are dropping cable because they are tired of being forced to pay extra for ESPN, yet they think people will pay even more for a limited streaming service?

Must be targeting the sports fanatics with money that's burning a hole in their pocket.

It will be a happy day when I can drop ESPN, CNN, MSNBC and several other channels I never watch from my cable. I'd drop cable, except I'd need a 30 foot tower/antenna to even get local TV channels due my house being on the wrong side of the hill.

The streaming channel will only be three shows, looped over and over daily anyways.

Lol. Anyone tried streaming on WatchESPN? Their stream cuts out constantly. It's useless. If you don't believe me, just look at their twitter feed.
