Dell and HP Resist the NVIDIA GPP Leash - So Far

Say whatever you want to say about Apple and trust me, I do have plenty of issues with them, but I admire how they gave nvidia the middle finger and went with AMD, full on, regardless that nvidia had better gpus for their laptops and the Mac Pro.

Same, to a point, for Sony and MS, at least on their consoles.

Fuck nvidia.

Nice to see some big names standing against NVIDIA's shady deal. IMO there's nothing "For the gamer" about anything NVIDIA is trying to do. They are a business that's in the business of making money, they certainly aren't here "for the good of the gamer" lolol. If that were the case they'd find a way to not make their high end cards cost the combined amount of the rest of the components in the system their card is going into.

Too bad Dell and HP don't sell individual parts. I may have to re-think building my next computer in favor of buying one from them.

Edit: Straight up, decided to see what a Dell Inspiron gaming machine would cost. Ryzen 1700X, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD, RX580 8GB. Then put together a machine from Newegg as I would want it. I'm $65 higher than Dell, and that's before buying a Windows license. I could shave about $150 off the price of my Newegg build by going with lesser parts, but that still makes the Dell a strong contender.
I never thought I'd see the day I couldn't compete on price with a pre-built higher end machine!

nice to see the spot light remains on this, not that I expected to see Kyle back down from it, but I expect others to move on. Kyle not letting this go will keep others looking at it as well. I would be surprised of we don't have a leaked copy of these terms within the next year

hmm...looks like HP may have caved. I was looking to see what Omen configurations there were. While there was displayed an 880-010z with a Radeon 580x, when you actually select the system, it actually comes with a 1060, and you only have the option to choose NVIDIA cards.

It is almost like that is addressed in the article....

Are there alternate ways to support?
Maybe not popular here, in my case I just refused to have reoccurring automatic payments and rather have a direct way to support. Anyways a HardOCP BTC address, Monero address etc. HardOCP may receive way more than expected. Not sure of Kyle thoughts on such, best guest is not interested at this time.

Well if some lawsuits are filed earlier than later, particularly by Intel, I would think will make the holdouts hold out longer and those who got on their knees worry about their new position.

Really, is ASUS going to tell Intel that their G processors are not gaming? Will not be under gaming brands? Why would Intel then give ASUS first dibs, shipments for laptops with these processors allocated to some sub brand? MSI? Gigabyte?

As for Intel chipsets and AMD chipsets - why in the hell will they support SLI and pay Nvidia licensing fees to do that? This whole GPP program stinks and Nvidia needs to pay for such crap.

I'm with you.

I had a go at giving support but couldnt stomach the number of places that need scripting enabled in order to make the page function.
And I hate experimenting to find which ones are the only necessary ones, I'm not playing this game.
I only want to give some cash, not my identity to lots of unknowns.

This is ultimately my issue as well, I don't want to sign up for another payment service, but I do appreciate the work being done!

I'd like to see the text around those exceptionally small snippets. With every contract I've read, I could make them say about 5 mutually opposing things depending on how I cropped bits out of them.

I run 4K with 1080ti SLI because for what I do, that's what gets the job done. AMD cannot.

NVIDIA has built a commanding technological lead in GPUs, compute and AI while AMD continues to try to make "cardz 4 gaemerz."

AMD needs to move a GPU that competes at the top and then support it (none of their eternal beta driver shenanigans). That's the only thing that will stop this bullshit.

You do realize that the point of GPP is to hold AMD in a disadvantaged position should that happen?

ok, help me understand what youre saying. amd needs to design a high end gpu thats faster then nvidias offering and have excellent driver support. in the mean time, let nvidia fuck them/us?

The only people fucking gamers around here are the cryptominers. Until the prices drop back down to Earth I couldn't give two shits less what any video card company wants to so with their branding.
Don't get me started. Nvidia is fucking gamers while paying lip service. You know the old saying of no courtesy reach around?

Nvidia could do multitudes of things that would benefit gamers but choose not to either to keep AMD down, or to make a few bucks.
Gameworks, Gsync, Physx, all would work on AMD cards or freesync enabled monitors.

It's nice to see that there may be some companies looking to fight nVidia on this. And companies with considerable clout. I'd much rather see these companies force nVidia to abandon this extortion racket than have to wait for years for litigation to go through the court system.

I've been wanting a new video card to replace my 980 ti for a while now. I think I may just get a Ryzen 2700 and Vega 64 to replace my 5820k/980 ti. Screw nVidia. This and their damn Gsync and gameworks crap has pushed me over the edge. I'm just done with it.

Keep beating the drum Kyle!!

Crap like this is one of the reasons my last two cards have been AMD cards. Nvidia has a history of engaging in anti-consumer business practices.

I think all gamers need to seriously factor this into their next GPU purchase. I totally understand that Nvidia has a technology advantage these days and that their cards can give better performance. However, the only way to stop behavior like this is if people stop buying their products. They really don't care about how much people complain on forums, etc. if they are still making money selling cards.

Sure it may be a tin hat thing but it feels like nvidia makes compute cards that happen to do games. And paid $112 million just to block a technology that would have allowed others to make better gaming cards that would have cost them profits from gamers to build their compute card empire.

once again someone missed the point of the article. May be read the article next time it wasn't about if you should build your own system or buy a prebuilt one. lol. You are so off topic here I cant even begin to explain it.

Yikes.......

This is some serious shit here.

NVIDIA has the hardball out.

I have said it before and I will say it again, this STINKS and even though I currently have a Nvidia GPU in my main system, this underhanded practice will make me think again when I come to replace my current GPU !!

As I stated earlier, I DID read the article. Maybe you are the one who needs to read before posting? I missed the point of the article? Why even have the article if it isn't to highlight companies that are not participating in Nvidia's extortion? Companies that do not participate deserve to be rewarded. I have shied away for years from pre-built computers, and for higher end, have been able to come in several hundred dollars cheaper than pre-built, all while having better components.

The reason I bring this up is that the only way to support these companies not participating in Nvidia's extortion is to purchase their products. Can I justify purchasing a new computer vs building my own? It is very relevant to the discussion. I really don't want to buy NVIDIA, and I don't want to buy from companies that sign up for the GPP, which takes out the top three motherboard and video card makers. Where do I turn? Substandard quality vendors?

Has nVidia's GPP been reported to the FTC? I sincerely hope a report has been submitted since GPP appears to be a strong arm, anti-competitive tactic.

It makes sense, dell and hp don't really go after custom branded cards. They are selling oem versions and putting out standard rigs. Nvidia's not going to start shortchanging oem buyers, who push the bread and butter of gpus - the mainstream market which holds 75% of all discrete GPU sales. This is where amd has made the most headway in the last 3 years, and looks to continue traction in 2019 with a 580x replacement card that will be a sub $300 gtx 1080 performance part. Nvidia only holds clout over discrete custom manufacturers like asus, gigabyte ect.

it has, and european comission.

I know one who's pretty nvidia only guy and only nvidia FX and fermi got him over to the "dark" side and he is in dialog with european comission on why it's unethical\anti competitive.
I've heard of numerous instances of it to both EUTC and FTC.

That's because the "leash" doesn't exist. Said it before, will say it again. Let me know when ASUS actually pulls their ROG AMD products and replaces them with this mythical "AREZ" series. And when MSI/Gigabyte follow suit.

It's nice to see Dell holding out. Too bad about ASUS giving in. I was hoping they would be a leader in resisting NVIDIA. but... resistance is futile......

My experience with sensationalist news in recent years has taught me that the sky is always about to fall, until it doesn't. I'll remain skeptical until the rubber meets the road.
I wonder if I can fit anymore idioms in this post.
Yeah, I have to admit I put pretty much everything you type into the same category, so touche'. :D

It looks to me like Asus, MSI, and Gigabyte's websites all still show radeons with the same branding as geforces on their respective websites as of today. Any idea when they actually have to change?

I've actually been checking retailers every few days waiting for the old models to drop out or some new models to pop up. Pics of the packaging/branding should be showing leaking soon, too. Especially for AREZ since we're already got info about it. That is when the shoe will drop.

It's only been a month since GPP was unveiled, might take a bit of time. Vendors and partners still have to clear out their existing cards.
