Overwatch League pro Josh "Eqo" Corona is in trouble for making an allegedly racist gesture on livestream. Corona, who plays for the Philadelphia Fusion, was talking to viewers of his stream when he said "I'm Korean," after which he used his fingers to pull back the corners of his eyes. PCgamer is reporting that team president is "working on a punishment now." Corona tweeted yesterday that he apologizes, and the gesture was never meant to mock someone.

While the VOD has been deleted from Twitch, it is still up on Streamable, so you can make your own judgement. Personally, I think it is nothing, and this whole outrage culture is getting WAY out of hand.

The moment passed quickly and without invective, but despite Corona's claims of ignorance and intent, there's no doubt that the gesture is racist. As Kotaku pointed out, Yuli Gurriel of the Houston Astros was suspended for the first five games of the 2018 MLB season after making the same gesture during the 2017 World Series. Shortly after that happened, Colombian soccer player Edwin Cardona landed in trouble for doing the same thing during a game against the South Korean team. (And issued a similarly half-baked "sorry if you took offense" apology.)

I don't agree with the 'outrage culture' as such. I think people do need to be sensitive to racism and sexism when they have a larger audience, as this fellow does, it's not a bad sign to see swift slaps on the hand for this. It's when people scream their heads off about it that I say OK too much if the guy apologizes and moves on.

I mean hell, between my wife and I we make jokes about my heritage, or we make stereotypical remarks and sounds because we think it's funny. Would I do that at work? No. Should I do it online with an audience? No. I should not.

That doesn't mean I would support the Tumblrinas of this world, but I think this accountability is important.

They don't care about the things they scream about, they just use it as a goal for some form of ISM or mass graves.

For people that don't understand the racism tilting your eyes up is Chinese and he mocked them by saying he was Korean. There is nothing Asian's hate more than being called Korean.

It's fine, next week this kids career he worked for will be over and the mob will find the next thing to REEEEEEEEE about.

Some people are too dumb to understand that if esports are meant to be taken seriously then they will be subjected to similar sanctions to physical sports.

Do you think that the NBA would have done nothing? Naw they would fine his ass make him do a public apology and maybe a couple games in the bench, so they are working that out atm is all.

You wanna be a famous athlete you need to become intimately familiar with concepts like moral turpitude and public image control.

Being an internet fuck-wad is all fun and games until you're a known commodity. Anonymity vanishes and standards appear, it's not just here, it's exactly what happens on social media too.

These people are publishing shit with their real information that may get them in trouble later. The internet never forgets. Especially a nice pair of boobs.

I'm tired of systemic racism. It hurts. It puts me in a box of suppression. I...I... I'm sick of it. Every grocery store has an aisle labeled "Crackers". Why, oh, why must they do that? We all huddle up there, eating the saltines, wondering what riches wait for the non-crackers in aisles 1 through 4, and 6 through 12. Damn you, aisle 5. Crackers. Indeed.

Where is the outrage?

I'm Asian. This is absolutely not true.

I have been told that the chinese were considered the "low race" of the east. SE Asian countries (thai, vietnam, cambodia, etc) being like asian rednecks. Koreans kinda like mexicans. And Japanese are tentacle porn watchers....

Was Mr Corona "on the clock" when he made the gesture in question or on his own time in his own home? This attitude that your employer can control what you say or express 100% of the time is BS. If you are on the clock, then sure, the employer's rules apply. That's why I never understood the whole NFL kneeling thing. In your team uniform on the NFL field of play, league rules apply, IMO the NFL punted big time on this. In street clothes outside, kneel for whatever cause you want. If Mr Corona was on his own time, then Blizzard/Overwatch league should just state that his actions don't represent the league's viewpoint. If this livestream was a team function, then he needs to conform to league/team rules.

Outrage is always a matter of perspective.
Give it time and you'll find yours and no one will care because the Internets have ambiguated and generalized everyone to a single shitty meme.

This, this right here! This is what absolutely infuriates me to the point I could bite a nail in half!

A bunch of panty waist snowflakes get triggered by some trivial little bullshit, they rant, rave and protest and the poor SOB that made the "offense" is run out of town, has his/her career ruined and is forced into exile.

All of this could be stopped if people in charge would grow balls and stand up to these crybabies. Stop apologizing every time some hippy gets triggered. How about the people in charge stop folding like lawn chairs whenever this 3% of the population start screaming and yelling?

I just don't understand why when people feel they have to throw everybody overboard and bend over backwards to suck up to a few fragile people every time they get their feelings hurt.

Jesus people will fucking whine about anything. Bet you ten buck 90% of the people bitching aren't even Asian. On the flip side though when will people learn that if you are going to stream for a living you have to be extra careful.

Sorry Harvard is only accepting 1/32nd Koreans at this point in time...better luck next time on your live stream application.

we have to back to the wwf attitude era this generation are all pussies
I don't think its that this generation are all pussies, I think its PC Culture and identity politics that are ruining public interactions and people are becoming afraid to say even the most mundane things like men and women are different. Heck I forget who, but someone was advocating for the use of the word people-kind instead of mankind. So stupid.

I don't know if this was intentionally funny on your part, but I almost spit my coffee out of my nose reading this.

The OWL is run by a bunch of holier-than-thou idiots who forget that 90% of their players are under 25, and at least 50% under 20.. Being PC is mostly older generation types who are out-of-touch and can't understand some humour, because god forbid that anyone should get offended.

Also they are dicks to most of their customers who play OW competitive, so they can shut it.

Don't you worry, soon #PCMR will be racist.
