Skyrim VR for PC April 3 (With oculus support!)

And ive been thinking of selling my Lenovo WMR headset because my GPU died and i dont have a powerful enough backup GPU to run the headset.
This news may make me keep my headset.

That sucks to hear, you might be able to find something cheap if your willing to go older. My amd 290 handled VR surprisingly well, a gtx 980 would also do very good.

Yeah, i was using an 8gb 390x just fine and loving Subnautica in VR despite its flaws.
But im currently stuck using my backup 3gb 7950 and that doesnt support VR at all, so my headset has been sitting in its box.

Brutal, I was lucky and upgraded my 290 to a 1080 during black friday just before the crazy gpu prices started. Now a gtx 1070 is close to a $100 more than I paid for my 1080

I just took my Oculus setup out of my brother's basement where he has practically infinite space, where we had 3 sensors set up for killer room-scale. Well, it looks like it's going back next month!

Proper Oculus support out of the box? Sweet, definetly will be getting this at some point. But just like with Fallout 4, not at full price.

Don’t have high hopes that the VR support is going to be fantastic since this is coming from Bethesda, but I’ll reserve judgment until the reviews are in. If it is really done right, and the VR support is spot on, I may break down and buy this as I am a big fan of Skyrim.

https://bethesda.net/en/article/4YSRrlXtpuKeWIK6EMiG84/skyrim-vr-comes-to-steamvrThis is awesome, super excited for this and pleasently surprised to find out they are including native Oculus and windows HMDs support at launch. This may be a day 1 purchase for me just because of that lol

VR is not new you do know that right!
In 1968 Ivan Sutherland and his student Bob Sproull created the first VR / AR head mounted display (HMD).

Bethesda made Fallout 4 VR but that look crap with no body parts and floating guns? and now Skyrim with a floating sword! wow the madness will never end in VR with Bethesda.

Ummmmm k? Not sure why the invention of VR is relevant lol.

As for FO4, it had some issues for sure but I got it for a good discount and had lots of fun with it. I'm looking forward to skyrim a lot, I love the game and as long as it's not worse than fo4 than I can't see me not enjoying it. Having things like arms/a body is a nice thing but is not a deal breaker, especially in a game where you can't see yourself anyways lol.

Skyrim VR was pretty well received on PS4. Not many of the same complaints as the PC FO4. So hopefully it going to be solid on the PC.

it might look ok now for the PS4 but knowing Bethesda they will cut out something on the way for the PC like FO4

Nothing like 2011 game, released 2-3x for full market price of 60$... at this point skyrim should be free. (but hey its vr 60$)

if you pay full price that's on you, I've already seen preorders for 15% off. I got fo4 for a huge discount close to launch and I'm sure skyrim will be the same.

But even if it doesn't go cheap so what? Its an awesome game that unlike the dozen other releases that every one gobbled up without bitching this actually adds something new to the game and atleast includes the DLC.

Ain't going to happen. I'm not going to buy it - and i wouldn't recommend anyone to; Doesn't matter if its in discount or not. That game is not worth spending any additional $. It should be free at this point.
They should make a new game already.

Look how many "tech demos" for VR are out on Steam for $20-$30. You guys are arguing about one of the best games in the last decade coming out in VR for $60? Like, seriously? I know they're asking for the full purchase price from release 6.5 years ago, but man, this thing is going to be awesome.

Would you rather have 5 of the crappy VR "games" on Steam or be able to play Skyrim in VR? I'd take the latter.

1. Depends on how good of a VR implementation it is
2. Bethesda is asking full retail upon release because they rightly know some gamers will pay it
3. I'd recommend waiting until they drop the price

You know, I've got to agree. 90% of the VR games on Oculus store are worthless garbage. It desperately needs proper AAA games like Skyrim but so far the selection is rather thin. But that still does not mean I would pay full price for such old game, it is a matter of principle. I hope the next FO or ES game comes with VR support built-in out of the box, VR really needs it or otherwise it will die.

Pay full price for the damn thing so we get more AAA games. ;)

3k for the PC, $800 for the VR setup, penny pinch on one of the few AAA games...

I like how you put it. Absolute lowest barrier to entry for a PC and Oculus setup that can play VR games decently is over $1000. An extra $20 or so to be able to play a fantastic AAA title is definitely worth it.

Gmg had (or maybe still does) 18% off for the game, shows up when you add it to your cart

I might have a spare key I can sell for half price tomorrow night (GMG screwed up and gave me 2 lol) if anyone wants

Well, to be fair, WMR is also supported so the cost for entry level is actually quite a bit lower than $1,000.

It's $180 less at most (if you get the HP headset at $220).
Yes, but there are also the recommended minimum specs to consider:

Oculus Rift

  • NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater
  • Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
  • 8GB+ RAM
  • Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output
  • 2x USB 3.0 ports
  • Windows 7 SP1 or newer

WMR Ultra - 90Hz

  • Nvidia GTX 960/1050 / AMD RX460/560 or greater
  • Intel i5-4590 / AMD Ryzen 5 1400 3.4GHz (desktop) or greater
  • 8GB+ RAM
  • Compatible HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.2
  • 1x USB 3.0 port
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

WMR Basic - 60Hz

  • Integrated Intel HD 620 / Nvidia MX150/965M or greater
  • Intel i5 7200U (7th Gen mobile) or better
  • 8GB+ Ram
  • Compatible HDMI 1.4 or Displayport 1.2
  • 1x USB 3.0 port
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

WMR can run on significantly less powerful hardware, albeit at a lower refresh rate. A person with a minimal computer or laptop can still get into VR with a WMR headset. That simply isn't possible with the Oculus Rift. Then in the future, should they decide to upgrade, they can continue to use the headset and gain the benefit of the increased speed.

You can do the same with a Rift and have the same crappy experience as with Windows MR, Oculus won't block it from running unless it's missing a specific hardware feature (and even then there are workarounds if you disable ASW and use ATW instead). They'll both have the same requirements to play Skyrim properly in VR, you're not going get away with less PC power for a similar experience; and in fact the Oculus will be more tolerant of lower power hardware due to it's superior frame filling algorithms, so you can get away with 45hz using ASW. Oculus will work on anything modern cpu wise (I ran it on a Phenom II ffs) and any Nvidia 9 series or AMD r9 or higher (and yeah, intel pro 620). It'll be just as shitty as Windows MR on the lower hardware, though. Oculus just won't list anything that crappy as sufficient for VR as most stuff will be unplayable on an intel 620, no matter what headset you use.

Just played for 90 minutes and so far it's exactly what I expected from it. It feels like a well done VR mod for skyrim, if your coming into this expecting a game that feels like it was built from the ground up for VR you will be disappointed but if not you will love it.

Just finished returning the golden claw and the game feels great to me. I'm going sneaky archer build and one you get use to aiming the bow it's a very satisfying feeling to nail the long distance shots. Bow aiming can be one of 2 ways (changeable in settings), you have it where your right hand when you knocked the bow is a fixed anchor and you only aim with your left or a more realistic where your aiming is based off the position of both hands all the time. I personally prefer the realistic option, feels better to me and I find it more accurate.

Magic is exactly what you would expect, squeeze trigger and aim your fire funnel of death. Want to shoot fire in 2 opposite directions? Do it! Game doesn't stop you.

Swords are fun but over powered by the fact they swing as fast as you do. I did the intro part by running through with 2 1 hand swords acting like a turbo shredder and enemies died super fast, while funny I didn't find it fun.

Some funny odd glitches with npc's sliding when they walk for a second. Graphics look like skyrim, I'm running the game with 8x AA forced in nvidia panel and SS at 1.3 and it looks like an old game but not horrible.

Menus are still just the base 2d version made to work in VR but it's very easy to navigate on my rift (unlike fo4 lol).

Over all the game is fun and I don't regret the purchase.

Just installed about 10 mods, excited to see how it runs tonight lol

if it's compatible with the stock Skyrim mods I'd take a shot at loading all of the high res texture packs to see what we can make of it. It's an older engine for sure but it was capable of a good amount with the proper textures loaded into it.

hey rift guys, is there a way to jump? would be an annoyance to have to physically jump . I cant find a button scheme anywhere

How's everyone liking it so far? I'm on the fence about purchasing it, with my huge backlog, but it's surely on my short list to play.

I stand by my short review lol, I'm about 5 hours in and so far the biggest issue I have found was at the start when npcs would slide a bit when they would begin to walk during scripted events. Beyond that I have had zero issues with the game, that in mind it is skyrim just in VR. It's awesome in VR but if your sick of skyrim then wait, if you like the idea of playing it again then grab it.

Btw, how is dual-wielding weapons in VR? Can you actually block with the offhand sword unlike in vanilla Skyrim?

Its all about the mods and the fact that Skyrim VR supports them makes it a worthy purchase.

Hard to justify a $60 game these days without mod support (multiplayer centric games may be a different discussion)

Especially a $60 game that we already bought for $60, possibly multiple times. It reminds me of Star Wars where you bought it for VHS, then laserdisk, then DVD, then BluRay, and probably multiple special editions of each. Talk about milkin' the cow dry!

My only regret w/ Skyrim after mods is that I really wish we had proper roomscale. From what I understand, while it appears you can move around, if you jump three feet to the right to avoid an incoming arrow, you'll still end up getting hit because your body hitbox never actually moved. Its only your disembodied floating camera head and stretchy arms hands that moved. I would also have loved to have seen something like in Gorn where you can bypass the helmet by stabbing to the unprotected face, or if you do hti the helmet, it acts like armor should until you defeat it or knock it off. Right now, the shield is either on or off and no matter how fancy you get with your swordsmanship, its still just producing a soft or hard slash.

I notice a lot of people are actually using the walk/run controls in VR... bluah! That makes me sick after a while, but on the other hand I feel like I'm going to wear out my controller warping around in such short hops.
