An email titled "The Ugly" from Facebook exec Andrew Bosworth has surfaced in media and it's ugly for Facebook. Written in 2016 the email suggests that Facebook growth at any cost is the goal. It even mentions that this strategy could get people killed, but overall it's more important to grow than anything else. Of course Mr. Zuckerberg refuted this email, but considering how things have been shaking out lately for Facebook I'd have to say his words ring a bit hollow. By the way, have I mentioned lately you should delete all of your social media accounts? Thanks cageymaru.

"The ugly truth is that we believe in connecting people so deeply that anything that allows us to connect more people more often is *de facto* good. It is perhaps the only area where the metrics do tell the true story as far as we are concerned," he wrote. "That isn’t something we are doing for ourselves. Or for our stock price (ha!). It is literally just what we do. We connect people. Period."

I'd like all the execs at facebook, and on their board (do they have one???), to have all their information shared with every facebook user. Everything.

Funny how it's only after Cambridge Analytics (legally) bought data from facebook that this has hit the fan. Hillary's team did MORE in 2016. Obama's team BRAGGED about how they violated users' accounts to gain an edge in 2012. But only now that Trump "benefited" is there a problem.

If I could wave my magic wand, I'd impound EVERY piece of hardware and all copies of all software from facebook. Servers, backups, remote storage, everything. Then, it'd sit in a warehouse while my one investigator sifted through it all. Hmmm, it may take awhile...

BUTTEREMAILS!

Social media is a cancer, there are some benefits to it I would agree, but overall I feel its detrimental to what it does to society. You can now start to segregate everyone based on their beliefs, and views. It breaks everyone off from what makes them up as a whole. This is exactly what companies want, very targeted ads so they can pound you over the head to buy stuff and make you hate anyone who doesn't agree with you on ONE topic....its pretty scary really.

You of course realize all of these forums and such that we use are in fact.. a form of social media. Oh the irony...

I think it would be news if there wasn't a growth at all costs mantra inside a billion dollar corporation. We didn't bring trains, oil, and electricity to the world by holding hands and spinning in a circle.

But the forum is just that a fourm, posted to one topic, extremely limited versus Facebook which is wide open. It doesn't change the fact that it still causes issues, I mean even on this forum there is still of ton of in-fighting and flaming....still doesn't change my statement.

Oh please. The Obama campaign distributed an 'Obama for America' app for iOS (and eventually Android). When users installed the app they were directly asked if they wanted to share their contacts and other data. The campaign used that data along with traditional likely voter data from voting records to direct their volunteers.

Cambridge Analytics gave online personality tests and told users the info was being used by Cambridge University researchers. They actually took the user's facebook data, combined that with psychological profiles from the tests, and sold that information to the Trump campaign.

Slight difference. People are concerned because crooks stole their info and used it to help create the current hive of scum and villainy in Washington.

that's not ugly, thats just pragmatic, they sell a service that connect ppl to each other, the goal is pretty clear, if the tool is used for bad things should they stop expanding, close shop ? what ?
it's crazy how ppl lose common sense and logic in these situations, forget what's going on with facebook, and forget your emotions, if you read the email in a neutral fashion, it makes perfect snse and nothing is ugly about it.

The Obama-spin has been going strong since CA broke as to pull a whataboutism and muddy the waters on the current issue. It's a typical tactic.

What the Obama campaign did was market research that users opted-in for. It's not comparable to what CA has been doing recently, which is an evolution of their product to include a less user-friendly approach to data collection and the addition of psychological profiling. They're hired goons and would work for either side, it just happens to be one side paid them more this time.

If some people can't disconnect themselves from their party allegiances to see that the two scenarios are different (and why the latest is worse), they're too blind to be apart of the solution. Rah rah go team go is a major problem with our political system.

They aren't very concerned about connecting people anymore though.

Just disconnecting.

I have to agree that it was about who collected the data, not that the data was being collected. Facebook (as well as other social media sites) make it so that you're the product, and that everything you did there would be collected? OMG, who would have ever guessed? How was this surprising to anybody?

And yes, forums like [H] are forms of social media, but there's one slight difference. Here, you have to seek out what you're looking for here. You may like NVidia, I might like AMD, but we both have to put in our legwork to get information that we're after. Places like Facebook decided that they can connect you easier if they cater towards what you want. And that's what many sites are starting to do now, including things like news sites, individually tailor to you. That's what's poisonous, because it's a diseased form of connection. It connects you more easily to like minded people while eliminating any outside opinions, because all you see is what you want to see.

Anyone surprised? Profit at all cost is the goal of all American companies. How's capitalism working out everyone?

Ummm. No. You're wrong in your definition of capitalism, the goals you ascribe to "all" companies and those which are "American".

Let me ask you this: How's socialism working?

Yeah. Facebook is evil. That does not make capitalism evil. That'd be like saying that since Jeffrey Dommer (sp? who cares) was a serial killer/cannibal, that every child born will also turn out that way.

Facebook should be shutdown. Permanently, and its execs prosecuted. Pick some arcane section of the law. I don't care which.

Sure, if you think the destruction of the planet and the deaths of people just for profit is a-okay.

Why do you think we do what we do? Profit only? If that's the case, you're a psychopath and need serious therapy and drugs, and maybe segregation from the rest of the population.

We do what we do for PEOPLE: our families, our friends, our neighbors our coworkers. Anyone who doesn't recognize that is a blight that is contributing to the downfall of civilization.

Corporatism (and religion, the original corporation) is "profit uber alles", and is nothing more than a giant virus destroying everything in it's path to enable huge profits for a very few psycho-sociopaths who wouldn't piss on anyone, even if their guts were on fire.

Religulosity aside, we all have a moral obligation to each other as humans, to make our society the best it possibly can be--prosperity, freedom, and liberty for all, not just the 1% who can buy it. Corporatism is antithetical to those principles (ever work for a corporation that put up with your opposite opinions? "Conform or be fired").

Corporatism is the most destructive force on the planet, right up there with religion. Without human morals regulating and controlling corporations, they end up like they are today, unstoppable kill machines destroying everything and everyone in their paths.

Profit at all cost is inherently evil, and that includes religion because religion is a form of corporatism, with the exact same goals (profit and control over the human life and mind).

Capitalism is corporatism, and vice-versa; and their very objectives have led us to this point where the planet is in peril, humanity is about to be enslaved to the whims of the hyper-rich and their "profit at all costs" paradigm, which automatically eliminates any form of defense one might have for capitalism.

How is socialism working out? By itself, not so great; but, as combined with democracy, it's doing just fine (Norway, Sweden, Finland, England, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, Iceland, Canada). Yes, they have a strong basis on capitalism, but said capitalism is heavily regulated for the good of ALL the citizens, not just the few who can buy special favor. They recognize the reality that everything we do, we do for PEOPLE, not things. And definitely not profit.

If all Facebook did was connect people, we wouldn't be having this discussion. It is what they did after they connected all those folks. They collected, saved, parsed, etc, mass amounts of data and sold the results to people willing to pay the price. Even then, most folks didn't care. Only when it came out that they allowed a third party, in this case Cambridge Analytics, access to that vast array of collected date to do the same thing that Facebook does on a daily basis, did folks get concerned because Cambridge Analytics use was deemed a data breach, even though Facebook knew the access and use was on going.

Each and every one of the countries you just listed will imprison you if you speak the "wrong" speak. Big brother.
Each and every one of the countries you just listed has a declining standard of living. Unless living on a stipend is a good thing instead of living on your own.
Each and every one of the countries you just listed is being over-run by militant muslims who are taking over different city sectors. Well, except for Iceland. But that culture is dying on its own.

I do not ascribe to your belief that those countries are free. Their citizens have lost so much, they have been taught to fear freedom. They are told that "capitalist" systems will turn them into slaves, whereas they are actually already enslaved.

But that's not about facebook. Back OT: facebook is a manipulative, scheming, corporation which should be criminally investigated and shut down. And the executives should be imprisoned.

Availability cascading at its finest. This isn't news....we've known that FB are a bunch of vultures for years. But yeah...convenient to "find" the email now.

Facebook is basically doomed. But like blackberry, it is wealthy enough to make it's death spiral take fricken forever.

Classic bait-and-switch: get them with the "free", rope them in with the inscrutable EULA, tighten the noose while feeding them addictive content; then, while they're too busy rotting their brains from apoxia and the addictive content, slip in even more inscrutable verbiage into the EULA, then *SELL* every piece of data you have on the rubes you've locked in with your product, including data on people who aren't even involved in your product (clickbait victims).

Then rake in massive profits on what was essentially a scam.

THAT is what Facebook has done. They quite simply sold out the trust of every user on the platform, using sheer brazen deception and obfuscation to profit off them.

If that isn't immoral as hell, I don't know what is.

Got proof? Breitbart, Limbaugh, and Drudge don't count.

Along with 90% of the corporations and their executives operating in America (including Microsoft, ExxonMobil, Walmart, and a host of others), including about 90% of the 1%ers who have thoroughly bought most of our governments.

I dunno, so many people are tied into and rely on Facebook for just about everything (including those "FAKE NEWS" nutbags who can't put their phones down for half a second to even do their jobs, much less interact with other humans), I think if Faceplant actually manages to get thru this, they'll figure out a way to make it *look* like they're fixing the problems, while selling even more data under the table. Zuckerberg is a slimy little shit, he knew this was going down, and will figure another way to fuck over the ignorant users yet again.

Anyone notice how FB removed the auto logout feature about a year or two ago... You have to manually log out from the desktop app now.

I bet this lot have basements full of homeless children that they have captured, just so they can drain them of their blood to inject in to their own veins, and just for the lulz.

Human cockroaches, in fucking need of stamping on.

Hmmm. Don't like messages unless it comes from mainstream (corporate?? LOL) media? Try this: https://www.billwhittle.com/firewall/socialism-suckers-venezuela

OT: Facebook should be criminally investigated and their corporate officers imprisoned.

Then, move on to Google.

That memo was cringy as all hell. I think our society needs to come to terms with the fact that we're transitioning from a service economy to a data economy. Sure companies like facbook make the news, but how much data do you think tesla has on you? What about that chevy with onstar? It's game over man... game over.

Disabling OnStar is surprisingly easy though.
At least in my car.

Facebook is but one part of this assault.
Google is one of the worst violators.
OnStar is another, as is Alexis (is that the Amazon thing?) Any of those listening devices are an affront. Imagine PAYING to have a bug placed in your house? There are former Stasi and KGB members who are incredulous over this stuff. People died to get rid of this crap...and the sheeple are lining up to PAY for it. Shrug.

Any data collected should require an explicit permission from the owner, for every use of that data with limits on where it goes, who gets it, and what it's used for. Big fines and jail time for violation. That's a role for government. Of course, it depends who owns the legislators.
