Leave Facebook and go to Instagram Instead?

I guess the average user of social media really doesn't have a clue when it comes to their data, who's using it, or who owns the platform they are using. Case in point is that some people are leaving Facebook and are getting their social media fix from Instagram because of the data abuse issues currently ongoing. Do these people not realize that Instagram has some of the same issues and to top it off is owned by Facebook? I just have to shake my head.

"Thank Goodness For Instagram," said a Wall Street research note on Facebook's mounting troubles earlier this week. "I will delete Facebook, but you can pry Instagram from my cold, dead hands," read a headline on tech news outlet Mashable.

Don't put anything on Facebook (or any other social media platform) unless you don't mind you mother, friends, or any random stranger or business seeing it.

I'm a fan of leaving all social media services. I stopped using facebook months ago, and am actively removing content and information from my profile. I've never had a twitter, instagram or other social media accounts. I'm also close to the point to be able to close out my google accounts too.

I don't understand why there is no true FB alternative.
If there were two facebooks:
1. The average user would get too confused and end up with no friends or followers (they'd all be on the other service), or:
2. The two FB's would start a corporate war that would destroy all data and therefore the planet, or:
3. The Internet would collapse from the weight of all the data duplicated by all the people with two accounts thus forming a black-hole that would suck us into a universe where the laws of physics prevent computers from working and everyone would die, or:
4. They would merge and become the one business to rule them all, the one corporation to bring them all together and in the darkness bind us all into slavery.

Leave Facebook and go to Instagram!

How fucking stupid ARE these people?

Who OWNS Instagram?

Hint: It's spelled "FACEBOOK"!

I swear to God, I can feel the collective IQ of the human race dropping even lower...if that's even possible anymore.

Facebook and LinkedIn are the only social networking service I am signed up with. I have been debating whether or not to leave FaceBook for a few months now. Now I have decided to leave

I don't get why it needs to exist

Facebook has its uses, it all depends how you wish to use the platform. For me it is great having family all over Canada and the UK, it is a single place that everyone has accounts, share pics and talk to each other when ever.

i dont understand why there is no youtube alternative (lol vimeo) I dont understand why theres no google alternative (duckduckgo and the like ARE google, lol @ bing)

You named alternatives to other platforms, yet not facebook.

You can have a private forum (a few clicks from an online web site builder and there you go). You can have a family Mumble voice server. Either are bone dumb simple to set up and cost less than $50 a year.

You can have a cheap personal cloud server with all sorts of apps. You can use Skype (not so private but not as bad as full social media platforms).

Even internationally most phones will still have free texting and photo sharing right?

The specific argument about "family" communicating is particularly wrong. That's easier to get everyone on the same service than 30 random friends.

Hell, if you just want to switch to a different social platform so you aren't helping Facebook... you can always use Discord. Problem is they'll datamine everything too. Which is why I'd rather have a private Mumble server or similar.

God forbid people want to keep in touch with friends, coworkers, and distant family all in the same place where they can share things about themselves and how they perceive the world..

Seriously guys, Facebook is only a problem because of their privacy and other publicly-shared issues such as selective feeds and ads system. Given facebook was a simple platform of you seeing what everyone you follow posts in order, without the website collecting data on you or using your content against you, but actually protecting your content.. That is what everyone wants and yet there is no such product - the question is why??

Minds comes to mind as an alternative, I suppose. MySpace has moved to music a long time ago, Instagram is image-only, Twitter is an endless hellhole of worthless content.

yes, because i want to explain to my family they need to go sign up on a forum they will use for nothing else but seeing pics and how to upload them and all the other crap..
I would love to explain to my non-it family how to use mumble and make sure it is on when ever we want to talk...

It is completely valid, facebook makes it easy for non-technical people to communicate and share, and everyone already has the facebook app or checks the website.

None of which is particularly user friendly, or as convenient as FB.

Let's face it, for anyone on these forums those alternatives are just as easy to use. But for the typical person?

Voice coms require all parties to be online at the same time, which isn't easy especially if everyone lives in different time zones.

Private forum is another pitstop people have to add onto their laundry list.

There are other alternatives to Skype like What's APP and LINE. However for multi-party notifications, these alternatives still fall behind the convenience of FB. These voice com apps are really just a telephone replacement.

I have people who are 70-80 years old playing on FB. Good luck getting them onto a forum. All they want to do is see the pictures of their grandchildren.

Facebook is OK for immediate family communication, sharing photos of the family, etc. Beyond that, it is a cesspool. Our neighborhood FB page is a prime example. I saw a flame war erupt because someone didn't like where their neighbor was parked. The entire online altercation could have been avoided by a friendly knock on the door and face to face conversation. When you take the human interaction out of the equation, people are x100 more likely to become jerks or say things they wouldn't normally say.

I am encouraging our kids to not even bother with social media. Talk to your friends in person. Call them on the phone. Avoid social media and for heaven's sake don't post anything remotely private anywhere online no matter how "secure" or "private" the storage is.

This post seriously deserves more likes.

alternatives to facebook ... HardForum ;) haha

I only get on FB for private groups, otherwise to the outside world it would look like I don't have a "active" account, because I don't, anything I do is in a private group that the "outside world" can not see.

I keep debating on just deleting my account out, but I don't really see the need because of above.

Do you also prefer a phone call over a text? Because it's the same concept of convenience. You're not wrong tho, I'm just saying: convenience.

Yeah for most things longer than a few words, I prefer face to face or a phonecall. I just suck at texting and auto correct is the devil.

Don't get me wrong, Facebook has its uses. For keeping in touch long distance with family it is a great platform. Myself and a group of friends used to use AIM (don't laugh!) to keep in touch, and once that went away I was a strong advocate of setting up a Slack channel. Sadly, most people already had a FB account and wanted to stick with that.

The big problem is the amount of personal information people have been willing to share. I get that FB has to make money somehow but if you can just use it as a basic communication tool and not give them any info beyond your name and email address, I would say you are coming out ahead.

Don't get me started. American society today is so pussified and millennials especially are so fragile, entitled and lazy that I honestly believe if we had to survive the 40's again, we'd all be speaking German.

I thought Instagram had already surpassed Facebook years ago in terms of what the cool kids were using...

Why the extremes? Seems people are either glued to Facebook all day or talking about deleting their account. I have a Facebook account but I check it maybe once or twice a week, and post on it maybe once a month. I think it's cool that it has allowed me to find people who I have not talked to in over a decade, I just don't feel the need to latch on to either extreme.

It can go the other way also. Tons of people are accustomed to simply intimidating or pushing other people around in face to face conversations. This can even be simple stuff like just talking over the other person constantly with a louder voice whenever you don't like what they are saying or feel that what you are saying is more important. Sometimes a "flame war" is really no different than what would have happened in real life if one of the parties couldn't simply intimidate the other. For the person who is used to doing the intimidation, i'm sure that they do prefer face-to-face communication and think that people are jerks otherwise...

And then there's THIS:

A-fucking-men.

Yup, FB, IG, Snap, etc., all these social media platforms are pretty much the same. Aside from privacy concerns (which extends beyond just social media), social media increasingly creates addiction, isolation, brainless internet trends and other detrimental effects (such as checking social media while driving). Social media certainly has its uses and conveniences for connecting society quickly, but users need to be more educated, whether old and young.

"Do these people not realize that Instagram has some of the same issues and to top it off is owned by Facebook? I just have to shake my head."
LMAO. When are people going to realize that these Corporations are giant octopuses, with many companies under their tentacles. Most people really don't know unless they read financials, which should be a grade 12 prerequisite before graduating from school.
""Thank Goodness For Instagram," said a Wall Street research note on Facebook's mounting troubles earlier this week. "I will delete Facebook, but you can pry Instagram from my cold, dead hands," read a headline on tech news outlet Mashable."
Notice how companies support each other, you scratch my back I'll scratch yours until we both bleed to death.

Just because I'm old, grouchy and crotchety that doesn't necessarily mean I'm wrong.

and just because someone is a "millennial" doesn't mean all that shit you typed either.

"millennials" have become CEOs, they're making the latest and greatest things, they will become future presidents, etc.

grouping EVERYBODY, (men women black white etc) in such a large range (20 years?) is the stupidest thing ive heard. Just because you saw justin beiber on the tellyvision doesn't mean that every single "millennial" is that.

don't like how the "millennials" turned out? should've raised them better.

and just because someone is a "millennial" doesn't mean all that shit you typed either.

Well what other generation is creating safe spaces and burning down their campuses in order to keep from hearing offensive things? How many working class 40 year olds you think belong to antifa thugs out burning shit because Hillary lost? Millennials are largely the ones responsible for this tranny gender bullshit. When you think of somebody being "triggered", its usually not some 45 year old factory worker. And yes, most of them that I've encountered are lazy and entitled. They're not thankful to have a job, they think the company should be thankful they came to work there. There are lots of articles and opinion pieces around in publications like Forbes that echo these sentiments.

Unfortunately, you're right. Millennials are the end result of being raised spoiled in mostly single parent homes with little discipline, getting participation trophies, not getting F's in school for fear of hurting their feelings, not keeping score in sporting events to keep feelings from being hurt and for growing up in the US with a quality of life never before seen in the history of the world. Millennials are snowflakes because they've never had to face or deal with any adversity. They didn't have to fight a war, live through a depression or even a recession, no poverty, disease or hunger and most have never even had to do a hard day's work. When you raise your kids so that they never have to experience any kind of hardship, they're going to fold like lawn chairs when real life smacks them in the face and that's what we're seeing coming home to roost with Millennials.

Wikipedia said:
demographers and researchers typically use the early 1980s as starting birth years and the mid-1990s to early 2000s as ending birth years.

First, 35-38 year olds are a lot different than 18 year olds. just labeling them "millennials" and saying that they're all the same is just dumb.

yep, i sure don't know anyone under 38 that likes to work, isn't fine with transgendered people, doesn't like hilary, is not in antifa, not burning shit daily, not getting triggered, and is a hard worker. Nope, almost every millennial is like that. (thats a WHOLE lot of projecting my friend)

You could pay for college with a part time minimum wage job in the past, today you cannot even if you work full time.

No millennial knows hardship? never dealt with adversity? you seriously cannot believe that. Most never had to do a hard days work? who is working for all of the moving companies? seniors? I don't think its people over 38, which would be non-millenial. Also, "real life smacks them in the face"? I think most of the 24-38 year olds know what "real life" is.

I bet the generations that ended slavery, gave women voting rights, made gay marriage okay was hated by the previous generation too, but nooo, transgendered people is the the worst thing to ever happen! worst generation!

come on...

The contrast between this thread, and the iPads for education thread, is amazing.
In this thread: people saying we should avoid Facebook because they data mine us.
In the iPad thread: people saying we should sell our kids and their data to Google in K-12 because Chromebooks are cheap.

Never said that

Never said that either. Of course not every millennial behaves this way. However, when somebody is, it's usually always a millennial.

You could pay for college with a part time minimum wage job in the past, today you cannot even if you work full time.

I'm getting close to 50 and can't remember any time you could pay for college with a part time minimum wage job

Again never said that. Look dude I know that not ever single one of the tens of millions of millennials are the same. That said, it's pretty safe to say that millennials as a whole have enjoyed an easier quality of life than any previous generation. And yes, due to their spoiled upbringing, a lot of millennials are not equipped to deal with real life. All you have to do is look at the months long tantrum millennials threw when Trump won.

I bet the generations that ended slavery, gave women voting rights, made gay marriage okay was hated by the previous generation too, but nooo, transgendered people is the the worst thing to ever happen! worst generation!

come on...

Sorry but eating Tide pods and rioting on campuses so some 240 pound hairy biker can use the same locker room as a 19 year old girl at the local Y is nothing anywhere close, by any stretch of the imagination to freeing slaves, fighting WWII or fighting for the right of women to vote. That kinda shows my point. We have it so good here now that gender confusion is the worst thing we can come up with.

you did say that because thats what i quoted you writing and its still up there, lol read your previous reply.

yes, people have it easier. people in 1950 had it easier than people in 1800 too. and they had it easier than people in 1200. Whats your point?

going from "if people want to be transgendered let them" to your strawman of 240 pound "hairy" biker in a bathroom, wow.

tide pods is gen Z btw, which is what people 18 and under are considered, a lot of people mix the two generations up. The millennial generation had the stupid "Cinnamon challenge". People want to be noticed online, they do stupid stuff, and the outrageous ones are the vocal minority which seem like the majority because all the news is about them, not the normal, not exciting/non-stupid people. I bet your generation walked to school in the freezing snow and insane heat uphill both ways and didn't do ANYTHING stupid or anything that the previous generation/your parents thought was bad/dumb/etc. Millenials! Argggh!!!

Anyway we went wayy off topic and Kyle doesn't like that.
