Wild speculation time: Nvidia Ampere might launch as GeForce GTX 2070 and 2080 on April 12th

if either co wanted to do something about pricing they would introduce mining cards, like they said they would.

Start tracking coin trades and tax them, they will quit.

makes me wonder how bad release MSRP price will be jacked, on top of the FE rubbish...

Another round where miners can buy 10 to 50 Ampere cards and gamers will wine about not finding one for sell . . . ;)
Gamers will whine no matter what, without understanding that mining isn't the cause of the price hike...there are many more things out there they ignore, such as Apple and other cellphone makers buying up all the DRAM chips cause that's what they use in cellphones.

I'm amazed that gamers are still buying (or struggling to buy) two year old gaming GPUs at their original MSRP or higher. World's gone crazy.
I used to have a rule that I never buy 1-year old tech and I thought that was extreme.

Well, it's cause it's too tempting not to want something that was THE BOMB at some recent point in time. I myself was tempted to buy an RX 580 for $400 from egg, when I saw the price drop.
However! A little voice inside my head told me to exercise self-restraint and and self-control, and hang on to my cash-money, cause the new tech is RIGHT around the bend, and I'm sure it'll be fucking GLORIOUS, so I bought nothing.

I think some thought the next gen of Nvidia cards would show up sooner and when they found out it was not it was too late and the supply of cards dried up at prices one would want to pay.

AH, people whining about whiners, welcome to the internet where everyone is a snowflake but me.

As for this potential news, my anu...wallet is ready for two.

I am still using a 760 4gb card. I was waiting for the 980ti cards to drop in value when the new ones came out and then mining went into overdrive and even those cards are hard to find for a reasonable price. Seems I'm waiting a bit longer.

No big deal.

Just keep swimming, Auntie, just keep swimming. As Robert DeNiro said in "Ronin", "good things come to those who wait".

I don't think N is going to do a damn thing until A does...and A ain't got S#$%

they have listed all the bs hidden money that even the politicians are doing with coins.
NOTHING is going to get done

It´s pretty much impossible to lockout miners due to using a lot of the same compute. And then they can just make a new coin etc.

Pretty simple, just do what ngreedia used to do when gimping all their gaming cards to 8bit band-a-riffic output outside of DX.
All they need to do is make a gaming card that just does OGL/DX windows and that's it. This is all GPUs did in the past for gamers and a vast majority of them today.

You want non DX/OGL associated compute and mining, buy our professional cards 'hand rubbing intensifies', which is really how it should be. They already have done a similar move banning GTX from datacentres, because the horse is out of the gate with that uarch.
Why do you think they're taking their time for this release? They don't have to rush (no AMD competition at high end) and after GPP will want to get this marketed properly first to segregate.
Miners will pay more for a mining card, this is clearly demonstrated by US pricing and stock availability.

Any smart business would want to maintain that pricing/increase margins on cards sold to miners (obviously currently retailer/middleman gouging is the price increase we see currently), cover separate driver development etc and sell gaming cards to gamers like usual.

You may be right that some will whine no matter what, but you're absolutely wrong that mining isn't a major factor of the increased prices. There may be other factors that contribute somewhat, but mining is definitely the main cause.

As recently as shortly before this past Thanksgiving, there were several different 1080 Ti models that were regularly on sale for 650. And even the ones not on sale were still regular price. Bitcoin was still only around $6k at that point. But then right before the end of the year, it had the huge spike to nearly $20k, which really started the mad rush. That's exactly when cards dried up at MSRP and when the ridiculous prices started.

Ether did the same in the exact same time frame, went from around $300 at Thanksgiving to $1300 right around New Years Day.

That is not a coincidence.

This was exactly me. I had been on a 980 ti for a while and almost pulled the trigger back in November, when there were several cards on sale below 700. But it was close to Christmas and I really needed to spend on other people first, so I figured I'd just wait until after the holidays.

There had been so many sales on 1080 ti cards that I didn't think anything about it, and like someone said it's not a brand new card, surely it won't go UP in price, right? But by time the mining craze hit full speed and it was obvious prices were going to increase, it was too late.

That is not a coincidence.
It's just a coincidence! It's the ram prices! It's the Catholics! It's the 'deep state'! It's just the 'zionists'!
Surely people buying 20-50 cards and farms of 1000s would have no major impact on the supply! Look at the steam survey!

It does seem quite regionally dependant on power pricing too, but that's just a coincidence too!
In my country the Tis are only 60-100USD more for the base models and the ricer models are similar increase.
Stock has not been an issue either, same with Vega. Even in peak mining you could still pick up a vega. There were not heaps but they were around, not 0 like USA.

Without a doubt the card supply issue was caused by the miners.

I say this, as a miner.

Ram prices went up, nearly double in the last year, but you could still buy RAM - anytime you wanted, from nearly any source. GPUs were straight up instantly bought out regardless of price for a month or two straight. They’d come into stock regularly and instantly be sold out. People were camping at the doors of retail stores before they opened to get cards.

Here’s another clue. Vega came out amidst rumors it was an elite ETH hashing card. AMD fanned the flame with the rumor mills - sickening. 70 or more MH/s may be posssible. When the card released the miners lined up dozens deep on launch day to buy them. I was one of them. When they were discovered to only do half that hashrate, and have crappy launch drivers they immediately started going back on eBay. I sold all three of my Vegas for a loss about two months after launch because they were power hungry turds with terrible drivers for mining or gaming. Ebay had Vega 56 selling for $350-$400 everywhere. It wasn’t until ETN and Cyptonite pumped that Vega price shot up sky high and couldn’t be found anywhere for less than $1000. That was after a lull in their value. That price spike was 100% associated with crypto mining. If crypto hadn’t spiked on those two algorithms which happen to favor Vega, (and crypto wasn’t a thing) Vega cards would gathering dust on store shelves in mass.

Nvidia cards were being bought by the 747 load and shipped overseas. A small distributer I used had 3 week wait times and 3000 card queue on all cards. Nothing he had ever seen before.

Nvidia beat previous profits by >50% on a two year old GPU line last quarter. Why does that happen? Crypto miners...

Let’s not try to rewrite history. It was without a doubt crypto that caused the supply issue.

Prices are coming back down fast now. GPU prices will always trail crypto proces because of the uninformed. It’ll trail it going up or down. A 1080ti is making only $1.80 or so a day lately. Electricity is 50 cents or so. In May electricity doubles for summer rates for many people. If crypto keeps dropping in value and electricity doubles for summer you can see an intersection in profitability quickly ahead. Several of my friends who are mining are selling cards and turning off rigs already at this point. Unless it spikes again soon, your about to see a deluge of these cards on eBay and craigslist. Be patient if you want a card. Wait until we are in the thick of the dump and there should be excellent deals to be had. Check back in a month or two, unless crypto perks up again!

Nvidia may just hold onto ampere launch in the current market until crypto all falls apart. This to ensure they have some demand for the new cards, and the new cards aren’t part of the deluge back to the used market stiffling retail sales.

The end of the fiscal year is coming up, no way nvidia stockholders will accept no new cards in 2018, and where's all that GDDR6 shit gone?, it's all about to drop for sure.

The silence is deafening!

Just wait for the GTC conference taking place on the 26th through the 29th March 2018 to see if all the rumours are true on Nvidia new GPU's

I just hope the power requirements are for a 500w power supply, So I don't have to upgrade it :)

The GTX 1080 ti had 600w so maybe 500w only four days left to know the truth;)

Yeah but a good 500W could run it.

Isn't Volta like half the wattage per performance? I guess we'll find out. But I would be surprised if what launches requires over 500W unless it's some 800mm^2 $2,000 monster.

Well I do like a bit of freshness while being fucked.

Cause they got more then you to fuck :)

Wow talk about good timing. My Wifes 980ti died an honorable death, and MSI is gladly sending me a $650 check for an RMA since they have no cards to replace it (Funny part is i paid $270 for the card used from the Hardocp forums here 2 years ago).

I hope to hell they announce the 2070/2080 for April 12th. Should be getting my check around then!

You got really lucky, they usually lowball big time. Maybe different now thanks to miners.

Yea I did not expect a $650 check. Now it was a MSI 980ti Golden Edition so maybe thats why they cut me such a big check? I mean I can pick up a 1080 GTX for that price.

But I think I will hold out a bit. Running an old ass 460 GTX on my main rig now until something comes in. I can mostly game on my laptop, has a 7200U and 960m GTX. IT will work for now.

They don't have to release immediately to please shareholders, just announce. If they delay availability a month or two, they're giving crypto more time to fully crater, while giving gamers the nod to wait for new parts instead of buying the dumped mining cards. There's a lot of pent-up demand among gamers, and interest in 4k displays and VR is steadily growing. If the 2070/2080 parts deliver a substantial performance increase over the current gen, they still might be able to sell some respectable numbers even if they're up against $500 1080 Tis.

Buying cards now just for mining for a quick profit is futile, for those looking longer term maybe but you will take a loss for awhile. ROI now would be years. Two 1070's mining ZCash right now is giving $52.56/month. For me these are old gaming cards and would be in the closet except making money for me now. I can't see folks going out and thinking buying $800 1070's will give them extra money - unless they believe in a coin or two for the long term. Hence pricing and availability should get better but expect prices will still be higher than previous because of memory availability. With less folks buying mining cards should help but not as much as some would hope is my take.

Time for them to say the 1180 is the fastest GPU in the world, then 2 months later replace it with a Titan. Atleast we will get the small chip soon so we can see what to expect for the big chip. No expectations for a big chip announcement today since they still restock the Titan Xp. Guessing they will stop stocking it when the 1180 is out.

1.5 hours to GTC keynote. I don't expect anything but AI, deep learning, and autonomous cars though.
Limited edition lemon scented Titan.
My Titan X (Pascal) smelled of strawberries when I got it. I don't know if that's an improvement over the bacon scent my GTX Titan X (Maxwell) had.

That's a nice cheque! GTX460 users unite! I hope something substantial is announced today just to stir the pot.
