HP Omen 32" QHD Monitor - 2560x1440, 5ms, 75Hz freesync, VA panel

Vsync sucks on top of freesync. I’d rather not use vsync at all. The mouse lag input from Vsync sucks and you don’t even realize it until you don’t use it for awhile. Then you realize how distasteful it is. The windmill demo will also show you that Vsync, which you can toggle on and off in real-time in the demo adds a bit of jutter as compared to freesync alone. I never tried to frame cap with rivia tuner.

I will point out: the entire point of VRR of any type is to not use v-sync. Turn it off in game.

Well I installed the Windmill and Nvidia's Pendulum demo. Freesync is definitely on. Pendulum is better to test with as it doesn't crash when you non-fullscreen it like Windmill and it also gives better FPS control. One thing about the Windmill is it really shows the slow pixel response times of the Omen as there is a 1/2" trailing image following the blades. On the Asus there is absolutely no trail.

Omen 32 @ 75hz

Windmill (55fps and 60fps options)
Freesync on - Vsync off = Smooth / no tearing
Freesync off - Vsync on = Jittery / no tearing
Freesync on - Vsync on = The most jitter / no tearing
Freesync off - Vsync off = Jittery / tearing

Pendulum was the same but the increased control over FPS will let you see when Freesync is out of range; lots of tearing below 40fps and above 80 fps.

Asus VG248QE @ 144hz

Windmill (I had to make the Asus my primary monitor just to get it over there. Only 55fps and 60fps options still.)
Vsync on = Jitter / No tearing
Vsync off = Jitter / tearing

Pendulum (144hz)
Vsync on = Super smooth / No tearing
Vsync off = Super smooth / a little tearing

Regardless non-FS 144hz looks much smoother to me than Freesync'd <75hz (at least in the demos. I'll try some games with FRTC and Borderless Windowed versus Fullscreen later). Though Freesync does get rid of 100% of the screen tearing it only really bothers me at low refresh rates; at high rates on the Asus (90+) it's not really noticeable to me.

In regards to the whole Freesync/Vsync I've found that turning Vsync ON and limiting my framerate to 74 using Rivatuner. When I did not have it limited and it capped at 75 with Vsync ON I did notice some noticeable input lag but weirdly enough with those same settings and having it capped at 74 the input lag was pretty much gone. With Vsync OFF it was a tad more responsive but with it ON I have a better gaming experience because no tearing during cut scenes, etc. Unless you're some MLG pro gamer I don't see the need to turn Vysnc Off with my configuration, YMMV. But if you are a pro gamer you're not getting this monitor.

Are you using Freesync?

I just received the monitor. My immediate impressions: holy crap that's some ghosting, and oh my that's some input lag. My IPS LG Ultrawide is looking better by the moment.

Is there anything I can do about the input lag? On just the desktop there is a very noticeable delay.

edit: Another thing. It keeps reverting to 59Hz in Windows Display Settings. I change it back to 60 (or 75) and when I come back it's at 59 again.

Yeah, I boxed mine up and am going to return it to the store tonight. The ghosting/smearing is worse than any panel I've used in the past 10 years; maybe even longer as I don't recall my old Dell 2005fpw being near this bad. The input lag might be better on AMD cards (which I'm using) but it still feels "off" when compared to my other monitor. I WOULD NOT recommend that anyone pick this monitor up for gaming.

Guess I'm back to waiting for real HDR monitors to be released. I thought that this one could be a stopgap but it's not at all what I anticipated.

Not sure what to say. I have the Alienware 34” ips ultrawide which is rated to be one of the least laggy monitors there is. I can’t tell the difference between that and my 1080ti and my HP omen 32” with a fury X and freesync. The black white smear is a negative of VA panels. Just like IPS glow is a negative of IPS and off angle viewing is a poor color reproduction is a characteristic of TN. Everybody gets to pick their poison.

I just sold my three omens and the Buyers absolutely love them.

Daffan's link describes it perfectly IMO even with the broken Google translation.

"The latency is an important value for players, we determine them as the sum of the signal delay time and the half average picture change time. With a signal delay of long 49.6 ms, the Omen By HP 32 can not convince."

"Worse weighs the fierce blur impression in fast pans such. B. in cornering. Here are rapidly moving parts of the picture heavily smeared. This will not only attract pampered eyes, who are used to a high refresh rate. Partly because of the large display so unpleasant that sensitive people could be bad."

"Even for first-person shooters, the display is not suitable because it has an extremely high latency. So it may be that you have already been hit without being able to react at all. In addition, here also shows the problem of blurring, if you want to scan the environment for possible opponents and doing too fast pans."

"Actually, the display is aimed at the players, because the Omen by HP 32 is advertised explicitly as a gaming display. Tragically, the monitor can not convince here at all and has too lazy pixels that just do not want to show a sharp moving picture. The high latency is also counterproductive for fast first-person shooters."

Thing is, I desperately wanted to at least be content with the Omen, because I'm trying to get away from 21:9 for various reasons and a 32" 2560x1440 is perfect for my needs. But the blur/ghosting is too bad to ignore. Does anyone know anything about the Philips BDM3270QP2? Or can suggest another 32" around $300-$450?

If the black white blur bothers you that much then you need to look for a IPS or TN based panel.

I only play an MMO, so I don't require 1ms, but there has to be a middle ground between not that noticeable, and an afterimage of the previous frame still slowly fading every time the camera moves like on the Omen. Maybe I received a bad sample, but it's difficult to describe how obvious and distracting it is. It's the worst I've seen on any monitor or TV used as a monitor.

Then it was clearly a bad unit, or I got three excellent units. You see this whole thread of 90% positive reviews and you can pick your choice of reviews on YouTube. It certainly wouldn’t be anywhere close to the worst tv or monitor I’ve ever seen - rather my vote is its one of the best I’ve ever seen. I directly compared mine to a Dell 3014 which is considered one of the best picture quality monitors ever made, and decided to keep the Omen because the 75hz refresh and freesync was a bigger tick up for gameplay than the picture quality tick down from the Dell 3014. I’m currently using the 34” Dell] Alienware IPS ultrawide which is a $1500 MSRP monitor and well reviewed at that price and directly compared that to the Omen as well in the last couple weeks and it’s a series of trade offs like it was with the Dell 3014. The IPS has worse black level, and IPS glow, and backlight bleed, but no black to white smear. Between the two technologies neither is perfect.

I don’t own the Omens anymore, (sold them last week) so I have no stake here but the Acer 35” VA ultrawide I had actually was considerably worse for the VA black white smear characteristic. I did notice it on Omen, but it was forgivable in the grand scheme of things.

Does your look like what I documented here or worse? Time stamp 32:49

Compare that to 16:46 Timestamp for the Acer 35” ultrawide VA.

The Dell 3014 IPS didn’t have any of this white black transition smear.

I'm wondering now if I got a stripped down version since I ordered from Costco. All the writing on the outside of the retail box looks to be Turkish. The only English I can find is the fine print on the bottom about how the product may vary from the image, etc..

And this is why my hatred of UPS burns with the fire of a thousand suns:

Someone really doesn't want me to have this monitor.

Just a quick FYI, UPS is really messed up right now. I've had several packages in route over the past week and many have been mysteriously delayed. I waited in an hour long line at one of their ship centers yesterday to pick a couple of them up. Everyone there was pissed. I overheard one of the employees quietly telling a customer that they just upgraded one of their main systems and it was failing spectacularly. Here are a few of the problems from the people in line:

- multiple delivery attempts with no drop off despite the door tag being signed which resulted in package being held at ship center
- packages going missing on trucks
- packages being left at ship center despite no request to do so
- packages going out for delivery that should have been at ship center
- packages just missing in general

Wow, that's pretty wild- and this is their busiest time of the year. I did eight 'peak seasons' with them in various hub positions, and stuff gets wild, when the technology is working.

I completely understand that the week following black friday/cyber monday is going to be hell for companies like UPS and FedEx. It's just that my local UPS hubs and distribution centers are slow and deliver banged up boxes on even the slowest days of the year.

Has anyone seen any improvements for NVidia cards on this monitor? I bought it planning to upgrade to a Vega, but that's looking like it will be more difficult to do than it seemed at the time so I'm looking for alternatives. In general NVidia cards seem to be a better value for actual gaming performance, but I wonder if a lower performance card with freesync would actually be a better experience. (Basically RX 580 vs GTX 1070 is the range I'm looking at).

Other than the frameskipping at 75hz, I haven't noticed any noticeable lag or ghosting that people have described with my 1070. I've also had them hooked up to a rx580 as a comparison.

I also have a GTX 1070, I built my rig at the start of 2017 and got this monitor to go with it and don't regret it one bit. Though I'm looking at possibly switching to an ultrawide still. Colors are great for me, no ghosting or input lag either. I mostly game on it playing everything from twitchy shooters, to RPG and MMO's.

Is there a way to turn off the HP Omen logo/splash screen when you turn the monitor on? It's a small pet peeve, but I would like to turn the monitor on and see the display immediately.

I've had mine since the first month of release and it's still going strong.

Yes. It's a setting in the on-screen options.

Does anyone use one to edit photos? I tried going back to 4k to edit photos and Lightroom still hates working in 4k. While I enjoy editing on my 1440p monitor, I've found using the predator for editing and running games a little odd. So trying to find a nice monitor to edit on.

You just need a large-enough 4k monitor, if 4k is your thing, though I have found Lightroom's scaling support to be decent enough as I use it on an XPS13 with the 3200x1800 high-res panel.

But 'large-enough' I'd define as 35" or greater; I have a 31.5" cheapo and it's certainly too small for usage without scaling...

I had 32" BenQ 4k for a year and it's not the display that sucks, but the fact that lightroom CHUGS. Even with a 5960x running 4.2 on all cores, 32 gigs of ram, and a dedicated SSD drive for the lightroom page file, lightroom just outright SUCKS on 4k. I was hoping Adobe would of made it better with the last update, but unfortunately it just isn't there yet.

The other thing also is I still game, and I've found 1440p a lot smoother.

The only big limit is budget. I rather not spend over $500 and the Omen seems to be in the sweet spot. (Plus I can buy it from Costco and be covered returns wise).

I haven't tried LR on the 4k monitor; it's on my Linux box, but I'll give it a shot. It does seem to work pretty well at 1440p.

Yeah it's amazing on 1440p. If you do smart previews it's a little better on 4k, but if you try to use lightroom in 4k just like you would in 1200p~1440p, it's just unbearable in comparison. Each image takes like 5~10 seconds to load, and going from multiple images sucks. While it doesn't help that my catalog is HUGE, it's still really odd how much different lightroom performs on a 1080p~1440p panel compared to a 4k.

I got this behemoth for around $250 on black friday.

The colors are great, very rich and much improved from my 3 year old asus 1080p.

Games are smooth at 75hz , 2500k, 1060 6gb pubg .
Dont have freesync gpu yey, but excellent monitor.

I have the Vesa mount for this if anyone is interested. Sold mine locally and forgot to package it back up, but they guy didn't want it. Send me a message - will cost you shipping only.

I got one for $239 friday night. My previous monitor was a 24.5" HP Omen 144hz and i have to say i really miss 144hz. I do like this monitor -- its a huge step up for my photo editing. Dare i say, maybe its to big? 30" might be perfect. I overclocked mine to 85hz using a geforce 1080ti, make sure you use the Display port input or it runs like crap. at 85hz its almost smooth in CS:GO, playable for sure. Ive seen other people get 95hz before it artifacts or degrades picture quality -- in my case i sometimes get "out of range" message followed by sleep mode.

So I have owned this monitor for a little over a year. I still have a 2nd year warranty on it. Somewhere for as long as I can remember it seems there is a faint band on the right side of the monitor about 3 inches inward. The left also has the same band but it is not very noticeable like right one is. You can see it on a black screen. It is only when there is a dark grey/darker color.

Does anyone else have this? I am wary to monitor exchange it thinking the next one will be the same.

If you meant to write it can't be seen on black and white only dark/light gray then yes, it's a typical VA thing called banding. Every VA screen I had at home had this to some degree, never seen it on IPS monitors.

Yea I meant can't be seen. What is odd is I notice it more on the right side on grey scenes. However I am not sure if it is because of the "controls" being placed on the right side (left if look at back side).

Anyone else see a slight discrepancy that has the monitor? I still have the 2nd year on the Costco warranty but I bet they will just do refurb hell.

It's taking a chance. I bought 3 Omen 32s, and 2 of them had dead pixels, and some worse colour banding than the one that I kept. I think that all of these monitors are going to have a bit of colour banding that is most visible on grey backgrounds, like the Hard forum.

anyone have some good settings for this monitor, mine showed up today.

This is my general setup, that I think looks good:

Brightness 90
Contrast 80
Gaming FreeSync mode and colour profile
Response time: Level 4 (Fastest)
Dynamic contrast: Off
Sharpness: Level 4
Power-on logo: Off

Anyone tried gaming on an Xbox One with this?

Tried playing The Division, but the picture just isn't as crisp as I hoped it would be, compared to my HDTV. Maybe because of HDR?
