TV just died - what would you recommend?

I had this small 19 inche TV (1997) that I never used for gaming and I had planned on replacing it when HDMI 2.1 came out with a TV worth getting with FreeSync 2 so that I CAN game on it but, it just died so, what should I do?

I'm trying to be smart with money here ...

I have an XBox One X and a PS4.

I also have a 1080p 21.5 Asus monitor from like 5 years ago but it has an HDMI. I was going to upgrade my PC to an AMD 470 series mobo and I have an RX 480 4g GPU with HDMI 2.0.

Should I buy new or just get something used to get me by until HDMI 2.1 / FreeSync2 TV prices come down? I'm trying to figure out the smartest/cheapest way to get thru this so I can still get a TV with HDMI 2.1 and FreeSync 2 at some point.

HDMI won't be released in products for some time. You will need to buy both a new GPU and monitor/TV that support HDMI 2.1 as nothing out today does on either end. Unless you plan on getting a monitor/TV that supports 4k 120Hz or higher natively and plan on getting a high end GPU that can do the same (and have the thousands to spend on it), buy something for now or (if you are fine with using a 21.5" 1080P monitor) use what you already have (all versions of HDMI supports 1080P @ 60Hz).

Well, my PC monitor is just a monitor so, I have no TV now. I was gonna try for a 24 - 27 inche with HDMI 2.0 ... but I can't find any for a reasonable price.

What is a "reasonable" price? Right now is a good time to buy a TV from a cost perspective, but that is relative to what you think is expensive. And as noted above, there are no HDMI 2.1 TV's that currently exist. You can wait for nVidia's BFGD. Or probably next year when some 2.1 TV's start to show up.

If you want something now though, then you're SOL.
 
If you are on a budget and need a TV, the P series TCL is suppose to be the best offering out there.

I do not own one, just going by what I have researched. But no reviewer has said it is not adequate, or that you can get more value for your money with something else.
 
You should go buy some 4k screen whatever size you like. I get another screen probably what I would do. I don't really watch T.V though.
 
I had the TCL 49S405 for two weeks and was pretty happy with it. I returned because I wanted the 55" version and ended up spending the money on the 55P605 (the Best Buy version of the P607 which just has a different remote). I finally fired up Horizon Zero Dawn on my PS4 Pro a few nights ago and it is stunning. There are better TVs available but they are also much more expensive. I'd vouch for the TCL based on my short time as an owner. Good luck!
 
Part of my problem is for this particular TV I do not have enough space for anything larger than 32" - preferably 24" to 27" and it's difficult to get 4k and 120Hz refresh rate in those smaller sizes - FreeSync is pretty much non-existent in these smaller sizes too.
 
To me, it's like SSD vs. legacy spinning HD. There's OLED, and then there's the rest. So, with regards, to "the rest", I'd just go out and find whatever is cheapest that you can tolerate. In fact, because you're looking at smaller sizes, good chance your neighbor would love to unload his smaller sized TV, possibly even for free.

I hate to tell you but most of the Hz ratings on TVs are just marketing fluff. Then again neither your Xbox One or PS4 output above 4K 60Hz so it doesn't really matter the Hz of your TV.

It's mostly for TV/cable but, I'd like to be able to game with my XBox One X but, it only has 60 refresh ... I'd prefer 120 refresh. It appears that there have been some updates to this TV since 2015 - it was $249 in 2015 but now it's $320 on sale for $279.

Bought this exact TV a few weeks ago for the same reason you're citing. I couldn't go above 32". I don't game on TVs though, gaming rig and fast monitors only these days. Was pretty frustrated that I couldn't get a 4k HDR TV in that size as I'm just close enough for it to matter (I tried a larger Sony and loved it but it was just too damned big). I cannot get the color to my satisfaction on this TV, skin tones are either too hot or cold no matter how much fiddling with it I do. Other than that, it's fine. It's a cheap TV in the right size with enough HDMI ports for what I use it for. /shrug

Yep, you "get it" - it's the best we could get for the size/space we have. I couldn't quite get it set right for my XBox X so, I think I'm gonna switch it back to my 5-year old 1080 21.5" monitor because it just looks better. My old TV was 20 years old and was a CRT TV with no HDMI or anything so, while this new 32" Samsung is far better, meh. It'll do until next year when I get a new 4k HDR FreeSync 2 monitor so, I guess my TV doesn't really matter much - it would've been nice to have 4k HDR FreeSync2 in 24" and 27" tho but, in TV's they'll only come with 720 resolution in those smaller sizes. I'm not used to this big tv sitting on my computer desk and feel like I'm sitting 2 feet away from a movie theater.
