Bloomberg is reporting that Apple is designing and manufacturing its own displays for the first time. According to the article, Apple is producing next generation MicroLED screens in a 62,000 square-foot secret facility in Santa Clara California. Currently they have only developed a prototype Apple Watch screen, that is not wearable.

I'm looking forward to the future of MicroLED displays on the large scale, but in the mobile market it could be a boon for battery life as well.

In late 2017, for the first time, engineers managed to manufacture fully functional MicroLED screens for future Apple Watches; the company aims to make the new technology available first in its wearable computers. While still at least a couple of years away from reaching consumers -- assuming the company decides to proceed -- producing a functional MicroLED Apple Watch prototype is a significant milestone for a company that in the past designed hardware to be produced by others.

can you elaborate on the boon to battery life? are we talking like 25% increase (meh) or something like 300% increase (yay then imagine better battery tech = thousand+ increase) thanks for details

Anything to improve the battery life. I love my Garmin Fenix for the always one screen and several weeks of battery life per charge, but my Apple Watch 3 is so much more functional with my iPhone. But, the Apple Watch 3 battery life SUCKS. One workout with music and I have to charge within 24 hours.

Not surprising. Apple is limited by current screen suppliers (who are also their competition.) Don't they currently get their screens from Samsung and maybe LG?
It's kind of like Apple developing their own processors - why limit yourself to the likes of Intel or ARM? If the tech works out, this also gives them a competitive advantage over their competition.

Samsung has been downplaying OLED for years, choosing to milk LCD. The more to push the overall display market the merrier!

Can I program my shirt display to read, "I hate Apple" or will that violate the license agreement (and I don't really "hate" them, don't like 'em either)?

The more and more Apple makes for themselves, the less others can innovate with the tech.

that is valid only for TV displays, on the phone side Samsung was probably the biggest pusher of OLED

That actually does scare me a bit also, as opposed to LG/Samsung apple is not known to produce HW for other companies, if they do manage to create this tech only for their own use and then lock it down with patents it would be quite bad for the overall market

Also to be fair promises of big orders from Apple to seem to push the suppliers to push bleeding edge stuff

I scream, you scream, we all scream for iScreen...
