Computer just shut off. No warning nothing and wont come back on. Where to start

Never had one do this before. It simply shut off and will not come back on. Wasn't running a video or any games. Actually I was working. Had to pull out my desktop backup to get back online. Not a happy camper.

The lights on the board and video card still light up. I did pull the power cord and tried again and still nothing. Not even a brief spinup of the fans.

I'm assuming try a different power supply first? My stats are in my sig.
 
I would unplug everything from the PSU and try to jumpstart it with a paperclip first.

If it jumpstarts - then plug all the HDD/SSDs back in, and do it again. If that continues to work, then plug in everything but the main 24-pin motherboard header. Then jumpstart again.

If the jumpstart fails at any point along the way, very strong odds it's just the latest component you had plugged in...
If that works all the way up until you actually plug in the main motherboard connector and it won't start off the motherboard... your at a 50/50 chance of it being motherboard or PSU.

Also make sure you check the power switch (try to jump start across the PWR pins on the motherboard header directly). That stupid button can cause issue sometimes.
 
Thanks guys. Going to microcenter for a PSU tester and a new PS to try out.
 
Well its the power supply. Bought a cheap ass one, took out the 24 and 8 pin, plugged in the new one and I got the fans to spin up and the motherboard came to life.

Really surprises me considering I only buy whatever wins a gold medal at [H]ard ocp.

First failure in 15 years following that process though.
