Microsoft Admits It Incorrectly Upgraded Some Windows 10 Users To V1709

Microsoft has admitted that it incorrectly updated some Windows 10 machines to version 1709 despite users having paused update operations in their OS settings according to a report from BleepingComputer. Only users that were on V1703 were affected, in that version Microsoft added special controls to the Windows Update setting section that allowed users to pause updates in case they had an issue with the latest version.

If you don't want your machines to update go to Services > Windows Update > Disable. We do it on test machines to prevent it from updating and skewing results, and I've used it on the PC at my day job, as it's an Athalon that was broken by a Windows update.

"Microsoft is aware that this notification was incorrectly delivered to some Windows 10 Version 1703 devices that had a user-defined feature update deferral period configured. Microsoft mitigated this issue on March 8, 2018," the company said. Users who mistakenly received this update can downgrade if they want to.

Fool me once, fool me twice, blah blah blah. Getting sick of this shit Microsoft. You've proven a multitude of times that you can't push out updates without it completely breaking people's systems (and I'm not just talking about grandmas 10 year old compaq desktop but brand new commercial grade systems and enterprise servers) and now you've proven that you can't stick to your own rules when it comes to not forcing systems to upgrade. It's getting pretty damn difficult to believe that these are accidents that just happen to continually occur over and over and not a blatant push for control over devices.

Oops, some* Windows 7 and 8 PCs were auto-updated to Windows 10 without user permission or intervention

Oops we accidentally changed the behavior of the red X to Continue instead of Cancel the auto-install of Windows 10.... oops we actually did that intentionally, not accidentally

Oops all your privacy settings were changed back to MS defaults

Oops all your default programs, file handlers and web browser were changed back to MS defaults. Are you loving the new Edge™?

Funny how the "oopses" and "bugs" always fall in Microsoft's favor.

Sure, where is the list of all ms ip addresses? And how do you know there aren't even more that can take over if you block the primary ones?

It will likely turn into a whack a mole type game. Just have to monitor the default block all rule and add the MS addresses to the separate allow MS update rule that you enable when you want updates. Sad that we are being forced to compromise one aspect of good security practices(frequent malware defense updates) to prevent another poor security practice(uncontrolled OS update before proper testing).

That doesn't stop FCU/1709. I had WU service disabled on all my 1703 rigs, and it didn't prevent 1709 from auto-installing, which broke their GPUs since there's a PCIe resource allocation bug with 1709 and certain motherboards. Even had "Delay Feature Updates for <365> days" set in Group Policy - Microsoft ignores that apparently. Even had the sneaky scheduled tasks that re-enable WU removed.

Some of my rigs with low disk space ground to a halt because "Windows Update Assistant" kept showing up and running the free disk space down to zero downloading 1709 without permission. These are systems I count on to work 24/7 and I incurred financial losses during their downtime.

I'm a Windows guy since 3.0, but this was the last straw because MS isn't honorable. Re-rolled my gaming PC to dualboot Linux Mint / Windows 8.1 (8.1 only when i game, Linux Mint everything else) installed ClassicShell and blocked absolutely all windows update stuff before plugging in Ethernet. Moving all my other rigs to Ubuntu(HiveOS). Enough's enough.

waiting for the usual shills to defend MS and state "MS provide options to disable/postpone"

should be good for a laugh,

LOL! They screwed up, nothing to defend. I'd be more than happy to use whatever OS is out there that runs without issues and doesn't cause me more problems than it solves. Stuff goes wrong with everything, it just a matter of what and when.

and you didn't disappoint... 4min to distract away from the issue... how long before you use VR and linux to distract away from Microsoft NOT LISTENING TO THEIR CUSTOMERS CHOICES!

What is there to distract from? They screwed up and it shouldn't have happened.

Does that work permanently? I'd be interested to know how long a duration the machines were set in that mode without it reactivating somehow.

The most dangerous difference between a mercenary and a zealot is that a zealot truly believes

I closely monitor all our work stations(around 2 dozen +) and I've seen some bizarre behavior with update. I've pretty much given it free reign to do what it needs to daily with a 12 hour window. All workstations are the same model, same specs, same bios. I've seen some get weeks behind while others stay current. I even have the setting on for them to share updates across the network. It's funny this story came out today because I just started rounds this afternoon making sure they're all current in preparation for whatever nightmare comes in April. Windows updates have been one kind of pain or other ever since anniversary. The first year was actually a pretty smooth ride but just hearing the word and I twitch a little.

I agree with heatlesssun: " I'd be more than happy to use whatever OS is out there that runs without issues and doesn't cause me more problems than it solves." and I'd add that also give me one that does all I need it too all the time. I've yet to meet a Linux fan boy that could truly prove it's that capable. I truly wish it was, I'd switch over in a heartbeat but it just ain't so. On a personal level I need it to run all my games or it means nothing to me. On a professional level it's also known it can be difficult to find all the drivers you may need in a business environment that can have over a dozen different printers spanning 10 years plus other unique hardware accessories. Am I happy with the current state of Windows, hell no! Do believe for a moment the hype someone chimes in Linux is the answer, not even! Bottom line is that if it works for you, great, but that doesn't mean it works for everyone nor is it presently capable of truly doing so.

I have Windows 10 Pro on another machine. I used wumt and it showed "Update Features with 1709" and its size is BIG. Weights at 3.45 GB. Nah.... Gonna keep 1607 on it for a while.

I seem to recall some very contentious forum threads on this matter and how they must have clicked something or agreed it cant of just installed it's self.

I guess now we know.
Don't worry, they'll still deny it and blame it on the user.

Microsoft fucking up in a way that goes against their users wishes ? Shocked I tell you, just shocked. Not that their band of trailer park wife users will care.

I took the 180301 Insider build today and I can say that I'm glad I did.

The Feb build borked a ton of stuff and I had to roll back to the January build. That build also had a ton of latency issues and messed with all sorts of my drivers. LatencyMon had me a solid red bar. I/O ops were not functioning correctly. All sorts of good stuff.

Knock on wood, but so far so good with the new build.

mine were "blocked" from updates but the 3 PCs in my house still forced themselves to update -_-

Zealot is such a harsh word. I think they prefer Windows White Knight Defender.

Around these parts, that means something who is not slavishly devoted to Linux and its "obvious" superiority. Or as I like to call them, the LDF! :D Stuff happens, amazing how people are able to survive at all, based upon the responses I see here.

If you don't want your machines to update go to Services > Windows Update > Disable.

That... doesn't really work anymore. Somehow, Windows will sneakily reenable that service to download more crap you don't need (for example, this recent feature update). 3-4 gigabytes of bandwidth needlessly wasted.
I've created a scheduled task that ensures that the WU service is OFF and DISABLED every 15 minutes, but I'm sure MS will find a way around that soon anyway. I'm at the point now where I'm seriously considering blocking every MS owned IP from my network.

Face it. Unless you're a corporation with a multimillion dollar contract, all you are to Microsoft is free QA.
