In a report from Electrek, the cost of using the Tesla Supercharger network has went up quite a bit. While most states are seeing increases of 20-40%, Oregon saw an increase of 100%, from $0.12 to $0.24 per kWh. The reason for the increase it to reflect current local electricity and usage according to a Tesla spokesperson.

The article makes a great point about the upcoming Tesla Semi and the "Megachargers" that are supposed to be locked in a $0.07 per kWh, that honestly doesn't sound feasible, and Tesla is already really good at losing money.

“We occasionally adjust rates to reflect current local electricity and usage. The overriding principle is that Supercharging will always remain significantly cheaper than gasoline, as we only aim to recover a portion of our costs while setting up a fair system for everyone. This will never be a profit center for Tesla.”
 
If they're only seeking to recover part of the cost, then they're getting ripped off for electricity rates in Oregon.

Don't plan on saving money in California by driving an electric car.

So the Model 3 gets 4 miles per KWH. Costs $6.50 to drive 100 miles in California charging as a Tesla super charger @ $.26/hwh

A Prius or the new 2018 Camry gets 50 miles per gallon. Gas (at the local Costco) is currently $3.15/gallon. Cost to drive 100 miles is $6.30.

Actually cheaper to drive a hybrid than an electric using the super chargers, plus the hybrid is cheaper, and the insurance is cheaper.

So why don't I save money by charging at home?

SCE has a tiered rate. 17, 25 or 35 cent/kwh. We already are in the middle of the 25 cent rate, and if I was charging an electric car, we would cross over into the 35 cent rate.
Cost would end up higher than the .26 cent Tesla rate.

So why don't I sign up for one of the special SCE rates that's lower at night for charging a car?
Because the special rate shifts the costs to the daytime, charging as much as 48 cent/kwh. I have a wife/kid at home and we use more power during the day then we do at night.
These special rates only work if nobody is home during the day, or if you install a 2nd meter.
It would take too many years just to cover the install costs of a 2nd meter, even with the lowest 13 cents off-peak charging rate.

Think I'll stick with a hybrid for now.
Once I retire and don't have the daily commute, even the extra cost of a hybrid might not make sense.
 
Lol, limited in relevancy, but paying $0.03CAD/kwh at home ;)

Also doesn't fluctuate based on time of day.
 
Build more nuke plants. It's the only tangible solution to meet the growing demand in a rapid fashion.

This is entirely false. A majority of future growth can be compensated by efficiency of domestic appliances and better construction/reconstruction. Add in distributed solar, wind etc and some super capacitor stations and the power grid is golden.

Now, I do believe for industrial applications Nuclear is the way to go, unfortunately due to the media over-hype of accidents and MONUMENTAL construction issues at recent plants (see Georgia Vogtie facility and the bankruptcy of Toshiba/Westinghouse Nuclear) I think the public wouldn't support any push into Nuclear until a technological breakthrough (Fusion) occurs, so our best bet is that ITER and the MIT reactors can be fruitful in making that breakthrough.

It's a shame though, the new generation Fission plants are extremely safe and when staffed and maintained competently would be much greener than any other proposed solution. We all collectively need to blame Harry Reid though for shooting down the Yucca Mountain waste repository though, not having a good central place for nuclear waste is a disaster waiting to happen.

No, it's not false. I work in the electricity generation sector for a company that is deploying wind energy en masse...their long-established coal and NG plants are necessary for backup, no matter how many wind farms are deployed.

Wind energy usually ends up costing more to secure and purchase (or lease) land, manufacture the parts, transport the parts, assemble the parts, interconnect the generators, maintain it all, and eventually lifecycle replace (usually only 20-25 years each) than the money they make. Compare that to 80-120+ years for existing nuke plants.

A big problem is that the demand is far exceeding the supply for these wind generators...the handful of companies making them are in a position to charge whatever the hell they want, for new units and for maintenance parts.

It's a government mandated sham.
 
It's about time the electric car bubble burst, or at least was deflated a bit. It's not the answer to sustainable transportation, just a slightly improved form; a fad that largely takes advantage of media-generated fear about the future of the planet re:greenhouse gases and the effect on the atmosphere. We are past needing a marginal improvement...we need a revolutionary change in thinking and acting. People are weak; we let the governments have too much power and the corporations take everything for themselves. We just keep working and shopping, buying into the horseshit du jour.

It's like nobody thought about where all the power necessary for a large-scale turn from fossil fuels would come from. Next up, what to do with all of the dead batteries, not to mention the ongoing environmental cost of manufacturing the 'green' vehicles. Just a different subset of the same problems.

FFS, look around....nothing is changing besides the general public being sold more bullshit while all of the companies, corporations and governments of the world take all of the surplus and use it to make themselves richer. Yeah, golden boy Elon, using all of the fossil fuel being 'saved' by his electric dream and burning it up putting more shit into orbit (which will come back to haunt us) or trying to go to Mars, and what the fuck for? Because we've sucked the life out of this planet? Where do people think all of the equipment and resources we'll need to colonize Mars will come from? Yeah, Elon's doing great things to keep the West rolling forward in its unsustainable fantasy for which we crown him a savior while half the planet doesn't even have fucking water. Until he does something good for the planet and quits riding a convenient wave, fuck him.

Until the right heads are pushed to the wall, things will just keep rolling to the precipice of human extinction, or at least get the population down to a manageable size and only then for the right people. Meanwhile, we plebs applaud a softer wool over our eyes, get distracted by and sold the next shiny thing they dangle in front of us, get sucked up into tiny little personalized vortices of prescribed outrages while in reality, in the insatiable world of power and greed, absolutely nothing changes. My next car will be a Petrol car. was looking at Hybrids and Electric...kinda nothing I really like there.
And diesel is going to get shafted soon, so wanna ditch my car before the hate starts flowing and devaluing my car
 
Once electrical vehicles get a bigger market share, electricity will cost you as much as the gasoline. People have to pay or leave their 5-6 figure investment gather dust.

If cave men felt the same way, we would all still be hiding in caves.

While I disagree with all the tax/government subsidies Elon gets to make the Tesla viable, at least he is trying to move science forward.
When the Human race stops exploring, stops inventing, it stops advancing.

It leaves a hole in society that will be filled with something far worse, such as Facebook or ISIS.
 
In another thread there was a defense of the perpetual technological relevance of Win32 against UWP, S-mode, etc. ITT there is a defense of ICE (internal combustion engine). Truly baffled by this perspective of defending technology nearing antiquation, as if any technology is going to defy the law of inevitable obsolescence??

There is no inevitable obsolescence. Sometimes, shit just works. Are chairs going to become inevitably obsolete? Or are they pretty fucking good the way they are?

In an other year and a half, the kid will be in college, so we'll have lower electricity usage, but much higher monthly costs :facepalm:

Gas has a MUCH higher power density then batteries. If we were able to extract 100% of that power it would beat electric in literally every way possible. May be near impossible especially with what we have now but there is nothing wrong with an internal contained explotion to turn potential energy into movement.

Thanks for that finishing comment; it's good to know with whom I'm dealing.

What to do with a big dumb and highly flammable strawman? Ok, when humans stop getting fresh water, food and air, a lot more will stop than just advancement. What’s to argue with? Prove me wrong, unless of course you cannot, being a highly committed part of the problem or just happy bouncing around in your delusion, in which case I was quite clear about the operational mode in which you can screw. You might actually deserve the future.

If you don’t consider the prospect of providing food and water – leaving aside education, health care, et. al. – for the literally starving members of your species as not being representative of advancement, then yeah, continue to cup the nuts of Elon but do it more quietly so as not to disturb the discussions of warm-blooded humans who are interested in a future for those beyond our fences, not just those in our backyards.

Unless you are in some 3rd world country where you have no freedoms, nobody is starving you.

Even the bible say "If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat"

Ever notice how the worse homeless problems are in "Blue" states like here in California where the politicians pretend they care about the poor.

I believe most people will have a better life if we have more freedom.
That means minimal regulations and government interference (not zero regulations as many on the left accuse free market supporters of).
I also believe we can solve most those problems with science/technology.

However, now days the government stands in the way of progress far more than it helps. Politicians who have never even run a lemonaid stand, think they know the best solution for everything.

With freedom also comes responsibility. Too many people would rather trade away their freedom rather than accept responsibility for their own actions/behavior.

As for my kid, she has work hard (and so have we) to get to the point were she can get into college. It's not the result of privilege.
I was never handed anything. I had to work a full time job so I could afford college (2 year)
I will have to delay when I can retire to be able to pay for my kids college. Again, not a privilege but hard work.
