*This* is what I bet Nvidia will be announcing at GTC.

I don't really understand these mining cards. Sure, if I could get my hands on one cheaper than a regular card, I would. BUT, once they sell out and demand goes up, so does the price, and therefore, the mainstream cards become more appealing. Unless they make a ton of these and saturate the market, I don't get it.

Here’s the problem with mining specific cards. Once the cards mining profit ratio goes down the card is useless. At least with a standard 1080 you can sell the card off to a gamer and get something out of it. This card turns right into a paperweight.

Creating nothing gets you nothing. Who would have thought.

I foresee lots of offices & desks filled with these

It depends on the price \ performance. I was expecting a high end gpu with the video ports remove but this is somewhat specially engineered for mining. That hashrate is a pretty decent boost over a 1080ti or Vega64.

If you really believe in mining and don't want the resale safety net it may actually be a better value.

except it has less cores and less memory bandwidth than a 1080ti yet gets way more Eth hash, so probably a typo. as to value, yea if it is half the price of a 1080ti otherwise no value other than perhaps being available. this will probably have 180 day warranty too compared with 3 years on a 1080ti.

I can only see this card making sense with a mining driver+device level lockout like quadro and rest for workstation tasks.
Crypto is commercial use thus should be using commercial cards and prices. Mining bullshit solved and more profit made.

They can knock off a bunch of hardware for a compute-only card e.g. I/O that could bring the price down a bit as well as add crypto-focused BIOS. But your right, once equilibrium is reached on price, miners will look back to consumer cards.

Not necessarily paper weights. They can (likely) still do compute with them, so miners could sell down to the business and scientifics.

.

my point is validated by the fact that nvidia had released mining cards on the 1060/1070 architecture already and they were then and are now impossible to find.

This is more of a custom part from Inno3d and not developed by nvidia. Probably using some harvested dies for the batch to test the waters. Wouldn't be surprised if we see more of these harvested parts see a mining only lifecycle.

Most of the finite element software I've used will not support the mainstream gaming-type cards for compute. Software like ANSYS will not support a gaming card like the 1060, 1070, or 1080 because their double precision compute throughput is only 1/32 of their single precision compute throughput. You have to get a Tesla card for the real double precision compute value. So, I think the aftermarket for these cards may still be pretty limited.

I saw a bunch of videos on youtube and it seems the warranty is only 30 days!

Im not sure if Im for or against this. I dont really know how much more likely a card used for mining is to fail than one used for gaming, but i wonder how they came up with 30 days.

Yeah, that limitation had entered my mind. Worst case, the chips get resold/cannibalized for C++ applications e.g. HFT. Akron, OH might be a few degrees warmer two years from now :)
