No, I'm not promoting the site with the same name, tried it, didn't like it.

I'm actually creating the thread to post backlogs and get advice on which game I should bring to the top of the list. (There were a few threads about backlogs before, but none in the past 5 years, so I decided to let them rest in peace)

So without further ado, here is my current backlog of games, that I already own, but never finished. But still had at least a shred of intention to complete them.

Crysis 3
Deus Ex: Humar Revolution - The Missing Link / Director's cut

DOOM (the new one)

Mirror's Edge Catalyst
Prey (actually both the old and the new, but I no longer have any intention of playing the old one)

Thief: Deadly Shadows (I played this to about 75% completion in 2005 but IDK why I haven't finished it)
The Witcher III GOTY
XCOM: Enemy Unknown (It's really hard to get into this after playing the second)


For the sake of full disclosure, here are the games that I own but don't intend to return to because I think they're garbage, but you can try convincing me otherwise:
Assassin's Creed
Assassin's Creed 2
Command & Conquer 4 : Tiberian Twilight
Conan: Exiles
Far Cry 2
Mafia III
Ryse: Son of Rome
Saint's Row IV
Sniper Ghost Warrior 3
The Division
 
If you haven't played Witcher 3, do that first.

Otherwise I'd definitely play the Dishonored games, Tomb Raider, Doom, Deus Ex, Life is Strange, and the new Prey (fuck the old one at this point)

Honestly, Witcher 3 will probably take as long as the other games combined if you're as thorough as I was when I played it. It's also one of the best games I've ever played.

As for the others, there really aren't any bad games in there, but these are the ones you should definitely play first.

You can knock out Gone Home in a few hours, so it wouldn't take much to knock that one off of your list. And if you like its style, definitely pick up Firewatch as well ($7.99 on sale and relatively short but well worth experiencing if you like that type of game).

My personal votes are for Dishonored, DOOM, and Prey but that's mainly because I completed them and enjoyed them very much. But you have several excellent games there that are definitely worth getting to at some point.
 
Alan Wake's American Nightmare - I liked the base game. This wasn't as good, but still worth playing. It can get a bit repetitive due to how the story unfolds. Nothing wrong with the game and at the time it looked amazing.

Call of Duty Black Ops III - Typical Call of Duty campaign. Basic story but still manages to be incoherent. Maybe they were trying to do something deeper but whatever it was it got lost in translation. Short campaign so it is over quickly though.

Deus Ex: Humar Revolution - The Missing Link / Director's cut - A must play. Awesome game. After to finish The Missing Link run around the Singapore mission (comes right after in DC) while holding a reprogrammed turret for the lol factor.

Dishonored & Dishonored 2 - One is notably better. Actually a very good game. Awesome setting, nice story, fun gameplay. Quick saving and all of those features that let you quickly experiment with game mechanics. 2nd was a let down story wise and wasn't as good overall. But some of the maps are pretty good.

DOOM - Runs great, looks decent, no bugs, but extremely dull.

FEAR 2 & FEAR 3 - 2nd is fun and a good bit creepy. Great action FPS game. 3rd drops the horror aspects entirely, designed for co-op first but playable as SP. Still a fun action shooter.

Mirror's Edge Catalyst - Some amazing graphics, fun gameplay. Side challenges are a pain and very repetitive. Decent story if a bit un-detailed. Overall I did enjoy the game although it clearly could've been better.

Prey - I wrote a longer review. Lots of ups and downs in this game. Overall I'd say go for it, but it is far from excellent.

Rage - Worth playing. Borderlands but a more serious tone with ugly texture pop in. Far from excellent but I thought the gameplay was actually pretty decent. Story is certainly a let down.

Rise of the Tomb Raider - Good game but I preferred the first one.

Far Cry 2 - For its time the gameplay was awesome and there were a lot of details. Replayed it fully once and don't regret it. Repetitive mission to unlock new guns aside, good game.

Mafia - I slogged through this one. Can't disagree with you much here, it really was an uninspired "lets copy GTA/open world games" template. I finish games to completion (except a few recently) but I imagine it will be hard to pickup if you haven't touched it in months...

Can't comment on the rest. TLDR: DE HR DLC, Dishonored 1/2, Mirror's Edge Catalyst are probably the best to go for first.
 
Lot's of good games in there. I'm a big Rage fan, finished it 4 times orso, which is rare for me, DOOM is also very good, Crysis 3 I also liked a lot, but that's less run in and shoot till everything is dead.

Bulletstorm is deffo worth playing but story is not that great, I had good times with all FEAR games.

Witcher 3 is an awesome game, does take a long time if you want to do it all, I did a 2nd playtrough once the expansions were out, I do however skip the gwent stuff, those mini games were kind of fun back in the FF VII or VIII days, but these days I can do without.

If it were me:
  1. DOOM (2016)
  2. Rise of the Tomb Raider
  3. The Witcher 3
After that, I'd pick a couple other games and then dive into Dragon's Dogma. Both The Witcher and Dragon's Dogma are epic scaled RPGs that will take you hundreds of hours to complete. I'd probably go:
  1. Alpha Protocol
  2. Dishonored
  3. Dishonored 2
  4. Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
I'm currently playing through The Witcher 3 after so many years, completing Mad Max and Fallout 4 beforehand. I'm around 60-70 hours in and I still have yet to progress past Novigrad. I think I'm around a third of the way through the base game. I can easily see it taking me 300-400 hours with the expansions.

What were your issues with the first two Assassin's Creed games? I will explain why I like them:

Assassin's Creed
The recreation of the medieval Middle East is amazing. I loved exploring the countryside. The story was also very interesting to me. I developed a fascination with the idea of the Apple of Eden traveling through the ages and influencing many of the technology and politics in the world. Also, the idea of being able to explore the history of your DNA in a real time simulation was also very compelling. The ending was well worth the journey. The game mechanics themselves were admittedly not polished, but once I got into the rhythm of its quirks I found it smooth and enjoyable.

Assassin's Creed 2
Like with the first game, the recreation of Renaissance Italy is amazing, and I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the countryside. Everything from the first game was massively improved upon, and the issues with the game mechanics were mostly resolved. The character progression was more interesting and meaningful. The story had a lot of good character development the first game was lacking, and I found myself caring what happened to the characters and very interested in seeing what would happen next.

By contrast, Brotherhood was never able to pull me in like the first two did, and I could never pinpoint why. I think it was just the fact that the recreation of Rome was not as interesting as the Italian countryside or the Middle East. I did appreciate the deeper puzzle solving in the dungeons, though, but I still quit the game long before I completed it. So I guess in summation the setting and the premise are the two biggest draws for me.
 
Agree totally with you about AC! I enjoyed the first two a lot, even despite the first one's flaws. Many deem Brotherhood to be the best of the bunch until you get to IV/Black Flag, but it (Brotherhood) never did draw me in like that either. It probably was the best from a gameplay standpoint, as by then they had refined things and introduced new mechanics, but as far as the game itself I think I actually got more raw enjoyment out of Revelations and III.
 
The Witcher 3 is arguably the most epic game of all time. Just be prepared to spend a shitload of time playing it.

Dishonored 1 and 2 are definitely worth a playthrough. Just choose an approach (lethal or non-lethal) and see it through all the way to the end. There's no point in half-assing either approach. #1's probably better, but both are good games.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is easy, but it's a lot of fun. The 2013 one was better, though.

I stopped playing Assassin's Creed because it had a few basic primitive mechanics repeating ad nausea in an open world that isn't really open because there is nothing to do in it. It was years ago when it first came out that I played it maybe if I tried it again I'd like it better.

I really enjoyed doom but one day I just quit and never went back to it. No idea why. Same with rise of the tomb raider. But the problem there was I started playing right after finishing the first game, and it was really just more of the same.
Haven't touched The Witcher or Alpha protocol yet at all, so those are completely unknown quantities to me.
I stopped playing Dishonored because I disliked the stealth mechanics in it, didn't even know you can play in a non-stealthy way.

Dishonored 2 and Dragon's Dogma: I just couldn't bear their blurry console graphics. Dragon'd Dogma is a mess, so ugly.
 
Dunno about what you should prioritize, but you should definitely still play the original Prey at some point. It was a great game and highly underrated IMO. It was much better than I anticipated at the time, but I was kinda starved from games at the time too since I played it in the middle of Iraq while I was deployed on my 17" Asus G2P laptop at the time. I've thought about playing it again though at some point but will probably never happen with my current backlog of games too. Also, I'm not sure if you're tracking, but they're two totally different games with no relation or similarities that I saw when I played the new Prey's demo; completely different characters, story, setting, puzzles, combat, etc.

Yes I know the two games are not related. I've heard good things about the old prey.
 
Finishing games is not a a lifestyle it doesn't make you any more edgy so I don't do it like smoking and overeating.
My backlog is so bad there is nothing I can do to help so I just ride the Rift on the latest game and cherry pick the stuff that looks worth the time.

I don't do things because it makes me edgy, I do things because I like to do them. I don't even know how smoking and overeating comes into the picture as a comparison to finishing games. I can't keep this to myself any longer, I have to say that many of your comments in this forum come trough as if you're high on something.
 
It sucks....I have a habit of buying games because I get that excited feeling all of us here get and convince myself THIS is the game I will install and finish.... Fast forward 200+ games on Steam, EA, UBI, GOG..... Even the great games mentioned hear like WItcher 3, Doom, etc.... I installed and play and don't really get bored although I admit sometimes I do...But I get anxiety knowing how many games I have to play. Then when I get into a game I get overwhelmed as it takes so mucg time to get through a level and I think about all the other stuff I could be doing(yard work, wife to do list, etc.) Shit....Guess i'm just getting old....But I still buy games so get ready Far Cry 5....Have all the other Far Cry games and haven't even got past the first few missions on any of them.... :(
 
I am the opposite. Even if I hate a game I try to finish it. That has been changing as of late though. I don't even recall which ones? The Evil Within is one of them.
 
play a few shorter games first to get you in a groove...then tackle the longer ones...

The Witcher 3 (Went in completely blind with no expectations (and not a big RPG fan) and I would now say Witcher 3 is one of my favorite games of all time
Fear 2 (Not as good as the first but still fucking great)
Doom (Mindless fun)
Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 (This was my sleeper hit of last year)
Prey (old one) (This game is really good. Still holds up relatively well and has some gameplay mechanics that keep the action varied. The beginning is one of my favorite sequences of all time)
 
If you need a break from Action games, Life is Strange is definitely a nice change of pace. It is a telltale style game. It starts off slow with your typical high school tropes with high school drama but quickly draws you in with Ep2 and onward. The game is emotionally draining. Ashly Burch does an amazing job in this game.

Actually the reason I decided to give a few CoD games a go recently (Infinite, WWII). I just don't have time to sit non-stop and trudge through a lot of these 50+ hour games. I hate putting down games because if I spread them out over 2 weeks chances are I will forget small story details, mechanic details and whatnot. For example, I tried to play Watch Dogs 2 DLC recently. I finished the base game about a year ago. I don't remember any of the controls and only vaguely the mechanics. Part of the reason I don't like playing a game before the DLC as well.
 
Deus ex would have to be my favorite from the list , although I haven't played all of them. Personally haven't played DOOM yet but it's next on my list for sure!!
 
The Witcher 3 GOTY goes to the front of the list by a large margin. Everything else can take a backseat until you've decided you need a small break from an RPG. Then I'd say break it up with DooM.
