Microsoft is moving their AI technology into your PC in the next major Windows 10 update. This means applications that are AI enabled will use the GPU in your computer intead of having to link back to the cloud to operate. Microsoft claims this will lower latency and provide more real-time results for developers. Also, the AI software will support other external AI processing hardware like the Intel Movidius Video Processing Unit. While this sounds kind of interesting, just imagine if this AI gets control of your VR headset with candy feeding attachment and shoves a drill in your mouth instead.

When the slew of new machine-learning based apps, programs, and core processes begin to infiltrate the new Windows AI platform – and you can bet it’ll be sooner rather than later – the best way to power them will be harnessing as much GPU power as possible. This is apparent in the fact Microsoft has partnered with both AMD and Nvidia to support the update.

Just another reason I wish I could tell Microsoft no on these update. I do not use their ai stuff or their cloud stuff ever on my machine, don't even touch cortana. I don't need this feature. And what happens if it starts trying to use my gpu while I am using it for something else?

I wish I could just by an OS from Microsoft, it's all I want from them. :p

Yay! Well chances are someone has hijacked your GPU for mining, so we'll help out and have our AI fix it all.

Is there an opt out feature for this?
Anything that uses gpu processing would probably result in more power consumption and more of an electric bill. I'm not too sure anyone would really want this.

MSFT does not listen to what WE want, or Win 10 would not be the way that it is to begin with, it would have been more a "modernized" Win 7 which was nigh on perfect as it was, at least we could pick and choose when and what updates we wanted instead of having shit shoved down our throat.

Also, I thought the whole concept of having the "cloud" do the heavy compute grunt work was to take the load off the consumer machine in the first place, as the "cloud" had a great deal more grunt than any consumer grade machine to begin with (unless you could chuck a few million $ worth of hardware at it).

Just another "we do it the way WE want, and YOU will pay for it" MSFT way of doing things..likely will be a have to pay X for the feature (like pretty much everything not bundled with Win 10 where seems they expect most of everything to be a la carte type purchase for continued usage)

Don't need any of this garbage for business. Why don't they release a business version without all this bloat.

MSFT used to listen to business because the vast majority of $ came from such, they no longer give a rats ass. Win 8/8.1-10 all the same concept, they dont give a rats ass, they want the millions $ but could care less if they bork and break things in the process..no matter the "features" and "glitz" win 10 may or may not have, it is pure crud, if it were for a smartphone or watch would be "ok" but not for a desktop environment, the GUI and general design behind it IMHO is absolute dogmeat.

What should be a click or two to get to where you need to be, or simple things like choosing when to do updates, if you WANT cortana or whatever, nah, they know what you want more than you do, dont ya know ^.^

"start is back" yep, and pigs sprout wings and fly from field to field pollinating roses ^.^

Person after person in here bitching and moaning... you do realize you can remove any MS bloatware you don't need... right? RIGHT?

I bet you weren't complaining about the fact that you got your free Windows 8 upgrade after you bought and paid for 7, which then turned into your free Windows 10 upgrade. You should have known better to begin with... if something is "free", then you're the product.

Just do like everything else you don't want on your computer, get rid of it.

So, what are these AI based apps? Before we all get our panties in a knot.

Cortana, Office 365 and "Photos"

Yeah. Okay. Big fucking deal. Don't use any of these.

Kill it with fire.

Not interested in being part of MS's GPU botnet. They'll probably opt everyone in by default like they did with the P2P windows update debacle, and buried in the EULA somewhere you'll be unknowingly agreeing to allow them to steal GPU cycles when idle. There's a word for that - it's called malware.

I wouldn't put anything past them after GWX. User trust is gone with this company.

This is a great change though. I never wanted my info on some server somewhere that I have no knowledge of. This is why I avoid cloud solutions for my personal activities. And yeah, the latency problem is one I've pointed out for years, I find it hilarious that the beginning of the end is in sight with this acknowledgement from M$ that the cloud is just too laggy for many tasks.

plaid, its almost as if you dont understand that all this bloated bullshit should be opt-in, not opt-out...but regardless, youre quite right about wats """""""free"""""""

Believe me when I tell you I get it. Why do you think my "free" comment was in there in the first place. You opted in when you agreed to take the OS for "free".

This update installs the AI hooks into your system on the premise they are only in case you install some AI enabled gizmo. A future update will install a distributed computing piece so your PC becomes part of the MS AI botnet code named Tay V2.

Show me how to "get rid" of Cortana.
Show me how to "get rid" of forced feature updates.
Show me how to "get rid" of the app store.

Don't even start with the "its free" crap. I just checked my volume licence agreement and there are currently 258 activated windows 10 professional licences at my work. We paid for every single one. The copy of Windows 10 Pro on my personal desktop and laptop are both using retail Windows 10 licenses.

I imagine some new uses of ai on a local machine based on it’s unsupervised learning models using data of your interaction with the pc. A decade ago there was a Mac desk accessory named ‘commander’ orsomething like that. After a while of use it would start to construct macros that would chain together frequent things that u did- for example if u routinely copied a word in TextEdit after selecting it, a macro would be made to do that without your intervention.

AI will supercharge that process with orders of magnitude more breadth and depth. Imagine if ur pc ‘watched’ u play counter strike a lot and eventually helped u aim. Or it noticed what music u play and developed a recommendation engine. And since all this is happening locally, a constant, hi bandwidth net connection becomes unnecessary.

Remember we’ve plateaued Moore’s law so now we are cramming more cores into our machines. And. They will take on specialized functions. Some like apples t2 chip will focus on security. Others are for graphics as we know. Ai chips will allow hardware offloadingto pretrained models. We might ev n get specialized chips that tally every mouseclick and keystroke, every system call and cache hit, etc

Though it may sound ridiculously useless to have all this bloat, I can still remember my elders talking this way about the gui vs the command line. And today only developers use the command line. The rest of use have been turned into point and click monkeys. And in the future our kids will need smart apps that use big fonts ( like f-book?) that look like they were made by ‘playskool’. The menu bar will be collapsed to a hamburger and the pc will tell us when it’s time to eat, to sleep, and use the bathroom

Let me guess, you still need to be net connected?

Use them? When did that matter? It'll be a global background process that's always working on you to have it all ready for when you do use those applications, after it's sent all that extra telemetry back to the cloud anyway.

Do you even google?

As if there were no choice to go another direction? That's on your company.

No, I asked you. Its obviously very simple with the way you sounded in your post.

We'll just rip out our entire infrastructure, dozens of servers all running Windows services, uproot our exchange, and reinstall linux on ~500 computers in 5 countries. Not even mentioning our contracted license agreements with dozens of vendors who (like about every major company in the world) only offer their products on windows server environments. Let me call up the CEO of the company I work for and tell him that Linux is a good idea.

people bitch that cortona phones home. They release a version that does everything local and remove the phone home and people still bitch

and where does it say Cortana will stop phoning home?

Just because they are moving some AI to your PC does not mean it will all stop communicating with MS ::rolleyes::

It’s the internet, if people weren’t bitching just to bitch I’d be worried.

It is very simple because any average person can follow instructions on the internet. You know this, and I know this. Where are you even going with that part of the conversation?

What a farce all of that complaining would be, right? How silly indeed would it be to do all that and complain about things that aren't going to change. ;)

Do you see what I did there, or do you need me to explain that to you as well?

I have a feeling that old cracked versions of Win7 / Win8 are going to be worth their weight in gold. With built in 'AI' it just means Microsoft can collect telemetry non stop even if you're off the internet. Not to mention it's entirely possible that MS plans to use this as a distributed computing resource, enslaving windows users into computing drones. You pay the hardware, OS and electricity, watch the ads while MS reaps the profit.

When will consumers wake up?

Can you explain your logic that got you to where you are?

Currently Cortona requires your PC to phone home to have a server there do the processing. They have finally changed this so that the softare that computes your voice to text so that it can do stuff can now all run on your local computer. How do you get from locally ran software to botnet?

That is like saying that if Google makes a version of their office suite that runs on your computer and not through a web browser that they are going to use your computer to process people's search results.

They are just taking something that currently requires a cloud service to work and making it instead be a local service on your PC. A move that will allow other programs to use an AI base for processing. Meaning that Google or Amazon could create their assistants as locally ran programs also instead of phoning home to process data. Moving towards something like Google Home where you can control your automated house in the future with most of it being done from inside your house instead of a need for everything to go back to Google's servers.

To me removing the need for everything to phone home and putting it out on insecure platforms is a good move.

If people are so concerned about Cortana phoning home, why don’t they just use their firewall? There are even utilities (like little snitch for the Mac) that monitor all outgoing traffic, and give you the option to block packets based on the program that issued it, the session, etc
