Forza Motorsport 7 thread

You all have a recommendation on a wheel that clips to your desk and some pedals to go with it specifically for this game? I had some trouble getting into it initially and think that could help. I have maybe 5 hours in it and I bought the ultimate edition o.0
Depends on how much you're willing to spend. All wheels come with a clamping system. Maybe not some of the new direct drive wheels, but those are at the most expensive end of the cost range. To me the game is a lot more fun with a wheel than a controller.
What are you using right now to control the game? Wheel FFB kinda sucks in Forza, at least until you tweak a whole bunch of settings which are overwhelming to a newbie.
Not really. Ever since the third or fourth patch the default settings now feel really good. Better, in fact, than the customized settings I was using prior.

Oh, that's cool. I haven't tried FM7 on PC since November, so maybe I should give it another shot with my G27. Can you make any comparisons to FFB vs other PC racing games like Assetto Corsa or RaceRoom?

I have not played other games with my G920 other than Forza 7 and Project Cars 2. The latter is much better than Forza because every car has its own character and there are a lot smaller details you can feel in the FFB. In my opinion Forza feels more realistic, but that doesn't mean much when you can't feel the car moving like you can in real life and you're relying more on the visual feedback and FFB. Forza 7 also still suffers from the exaggerated Ackermann Angle, but the FFB lag is almost eliminated now.

I didn't buy fm7 and sold my g920 partially because of the crappy feel. Even with the settings dialed in in fm7 demo and fm6 apex I didn't think it was great. That combined with no Toyota supra kind of made me skip over it despite anxiously awaiting it. Ah well, been playing fm horizon 3 on pc with a 360 controller.

Yeah I honestly just play with a Xbone controller for the most part. You can definitely achieve better times and more control with a wheel just because it's a more precise input device, but there isn't really much "feel" in any of it compared to the more "hardcore" sims. Live For Speed is still my favorite FFB implementation actually, but it's old and not very active anymore.

They are also doing this.

Beforehand, it wasn't clear if you were about to go out of the track and get penalized while driving. Luckily, the developer will add clear track limits so that players know what they shouldn't cross. Having a raised edge is a great visual cue so you can try your best not to hit the "bumper" on the side.

Apart from that, leaderboards for each track with each car are coming back. Let's say you want to be the fastest with a Ferrari LaFerrari in Dubai. It's now possible to show that off.

While drag racing is already a part of Forza Motorsport 7, it's rather cumbersome because, instead of simply tweaking your ride and jumping back into the race, you have to reload the entire track again and wait for a really long time. In the coming months, the team will add experimental drag racing to the game which basically allows you to do lap after lap, modify your vehicle, and then try again. It loads instantaneously until you decide you're done and want to quit. This is what drag racing should've been like from the beginning. This mode won't support multiplayer initially because it's just a test at the moment.

I tried so hard revisiting FM7 with a wheel, but the FFB is terrible. Compare it to a game like NFS Payback, where wheels were implemented in a half-assed manner, yet the FFB in that game is perfect.

The July update was released yesterday. This one is big news, as they have done away with locking the majority of cars behind progression, the specialty dealer, and loot crates. Forza Edition cars still need to be unlocked through progression, however.

https://forzamotorsport.net/en-us/news/fm7_july_update

A new DLC pack was released alongside the update, and includes a couple of highly requested cars. This is included in the extended car pass.
  • 1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce
  • 2018 Exomotive Exocet Sport V8 XP-5
  • 2017 Ferrari 812 Superfast
  • 2018 KTM #22 True Racing X-Bow GT4
  • 2018 McLaren 720S
  • 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS
  • 2017 VUHL 05RR
There will be one more DLC that the car pass will cover.

Unlocking the cars is big news. I was so annoyed that I couldn't just buy a car that I've reached the respective tier and had the requisite credits for. Also liking the latest batch of cars, no SUVs/Trucks is a plus!

So are they not doing expansions for Forza 7, it seems like we should have had one by now?

I thought I had heard rumors about an IndyCar expansion, like the NASCAR expansion for Forza 6. From recent news it sounds like Turn 10 wants to continue support for FM7 into the future, so we may still get one.

I'd personally like to see an IMSA expansion that fills out the car and track roster. I've especially been dying for Mid-Ohio and Mosport to make their way to Forza.

I have a feeling MS told Turn 10 to keep adding to Forza 7 instead of starting work on Forza 8, because they want that to be a launch title for whatever the next gen Xbox console is.

I would be seriously surprised if T10 does anything outside of a track expansion. They did state they are focused on fixing the game and adding stuff like the new Drift and Drag mode. Im really disappointed in T10 anymore. I was supportive of them coming to PC and threw money at them. FH3 was very rocky at first but they cleaned it up. FM7 was more of a dumpster fire and it still to this day has bugs that FH3 had an fixed. I feel like T10 is just cashing in and instead of trying they are just sitting back doing minimal. After seeing FH4 i feel like Playground Games is doing a way better job then T10.

T10 better pull their head out of there ass as 7 will likely be the last motorsport game i buy unless it drastically changes for the better. The tracks in FM5 look better then FM7 for fucks sakes ya know?

Ok bear with me as in 30+ years of computing this is the very first video game I want to play (other than my stint with SimCity before it sucked).

I went to a friend's and he had Forza 7. It was running like crap since it was on an old AMD CPU with an equally old Radeon card (don't know which ones). He had jerry rigged out of 2x4s and plywood a stand for the wheel, shifter and pedals. It looks like some hillbilly contraption. However, I absolutely loved the game. So what I want to do now is to have it on my main system (Home System 1 in signature).

So... I know nothing about this field of gaming... and I'm going to ask some very stupid questions, please forgive me in advance.

1) What recommendations do you have for wheel, shifter and pedals? Note that my budget is medium low so although I'd love to drop a grand on this new toy my wife would make sure that they couldn't identify my body through dental records.
2) Do I need to shell out for a full stand or can I just clamp the wheel to my desk? If so, what keeps the pedals from sliding around on the rug?
3) Is Forza 7 the one for me? I don't want to do white knuckle driving and crazy physics-defying stunts, I want to drive nice cars in a more or less realistic setting. Would I be better off with a different car game? Also I'm ok with a game that is not on racetracks and just runs on various streets, but I understand that those games are rare.

Thanks!

wheels: a good place to start is logitech. A used g27 should do the trick (check if it is supported, I can't remember) or a g29, g925, etc. They also have optional shifters. Can look into more expensive wheels (fanatec) but probably not needed for a beginner.

stand: a full stand would be great. The pedals absolutely slide around (they have some spikes that are designed to dig in to carpet though), I always found myself keeping my left foot on the front part of the pedal assembly which keeps it from moving much. Ideally though, put the pedals up against the wall so they can't move.

Game: sounds like forza 7 is what you are after. Controlled races, good variety of cars and tracks. For more 'sim' racers, project cars and asseto corsa.

Thanks for your reply, as it certainly helps. In my area I'm finding a lot of Logitech Driving Force versions on Craigslist and Kijiji but nothing of the more modern ones and unfortunately the new price is prohibitive at my level and with my penny-pinching wife.

I'm having a tough time buying the game on Amazon as it always seems to default to the Xbox version rather than the Windows 10 one. There is this note that confuses me:

"Xbox One and Windows 10 PC exclusive. Supports Xbox Play Anywhere: yours to play on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PC at no additional cost. "

Now does that mean that you can play anywhere on a Win10 PC as long as you have it loaded on an Xbox One console (which I don't have)?

I stated up front that I'd be asking stupid questions, so there is the latest one!

If you buy the digital version it will be linked to your Microsoft account which is used by both the Xbox and Windows store. You can download it on either platform (or both) and play it on either. This is only the digital version, if you buy the physical disk, it only works with the Xbox One.

Kudos on clarity! You would be a prized advantage to Amazon!

Later Edit: Just found a Logitech G920 new for US$185 so I'm jumping on that. Looks like I'll be racing soon. Thanks for your help!

The G920 is a good choice. Probably the best in its price bracket if you can't afford a belt-driven or direct-driven wheel. I'm using one myself since I don't feel like sinking that amount of money into a Fanatec setup anymore. I have to warn you about the brake pedal, though. They put a rubber damper in it to simulate increasing pressure the further you press it, but I find it a major hindrance as it takes way too much force to depress it to where you're getting full braking. I get around it by setting the outside deadzone in Forza to 65%, and "short calibrate" it in games that don't allow you to change the outside deadzone separately.

Whats the cheapest way to get Win 10 64bit and can I run two different Windows on my PC at same time?

You're going to need a USB drive and the full ISO, as attempting to install W10 within W7 will just upgrade the W7 install. Boot from the USB drive and install to a new partition or separate storage drive. You'll need to use the motherboard's boot menu to boot into Windows 7 afterward, as it will always boot W10 going forward, and the multi OS menu in W10 doesn't work.

There is a guy in the FS/FT section who regularly sells legit keys for $10. The poster's name escapes me at the moment.

I have only used it a couple times but the win10 os menu has worked fine for me. I dual booted 7/10 for a couple weeks before upgrading. 10 just needs to be installed last as far as I know.

Interesting. It never worked for me.

Thank you so much for your reply and my apologies for the delay in replying, but I wanted to wait until I had everything set up and working. I purchased a US$35 little computer stand from Staples then just added a plywood platform to the bottom where I was able to bolt in the pedals and weighed the desk down with 10 lb barbells. The setup works great and is much better for my needs than a stand as I really like having a space for a keyboard and mouse while I'm playing F7 as I find the menus easier to navigate that way. Also it's easy to just pick up and move around the room when I place my regular computer desk in front of the 50" 4K as this system is primarily a work PC.

You are absolutely right as I have found that the braking is abysmal as well. However, when I go into controller settings this is all I find as each of the following has Deadzone Inside and Outside:

Steering Axis
Acceleration Axis
Deceleration Axis
Clutch Axis
Handbrake Axis

Where do I find the setting for the specific deadzone you are referring to?

I appreciate your assistance!

Deceleration. Ignore the other settings, as this is not my screenshot. I use the default settings otherwise with all other deadzones set to 0 inside and 100 outside.

You, sir, are a certified genius. That setting of the outside deadzone to 65 massively helped the braking which was pretty well unusable with the default settings. Now the only question I have left is how the #$%& do you get onto the leaderboards. I'm running a homologated car, I set the 6th fastest time on one of the leaderboards, but I never show up. Is there some trick to this that I'm missing?

Are you sure about that? If you have an exclamation point on your time that means it is invalidated, but you should still be on the leaderboard. It's hard to get a clean lap time in single player races because drafting whether you're the lead or following car is one of the things that invalidates lap times.

Yes, for leaderboard position. The reason you still get invalidated when you're the lead car is back in the day going back to Forza 2 on Xbox 360 friends would do private online races together with a faster car pushing a much slower car down the straights to get unrealistic lap times.
