Recommend some Good Story Driven Single Player FPS games?

You should definitely give Crysis a chance. Titanfall 2 is one that people have already mentioned which I think is pretty good.

This might sound silly, but I have never touched the Destiny franchise before this morning and I am having fun with the story of Destiny 2. I'm trying it for free on the Blizzard Launcher, so it remains to be seen whether I will end up actually paying money for it.

I have a fondness for the Monolith FPSs.

No One Lives Forever (1999)
Alien vs Predator 2 (2001) - the BEST of the Alien games. (yes, even better than Alien Isolation)
No One LIves Forever 2 (2002)
Tron 2.0 (2003)

Tron is still available via Steam and GOG. NOLF and AvP2 will be hard to find.
There are optimization tweaks/hacks for both NOLF and TRON that'll make them perform better on modern OSs.

I liked the original AVP, the second not much. Alien Isolation is a very different game, purely as a shooter AVP is much better, since Isolation is not a shooter at all. But the whole experience is another question entirely.
 
The NOLF games were fantastic at the time but had relatively little following and a shed load of bugs!
Easily my favourite games for a while.

I thought AVP2 had better story and better multiplayer than AVP1. The Alien campaign when you start as a facehugger and go all the way to a drone/warrior is still one of the coolest FPS gimmicks I've ever played. Isolation is a great game, even a great Alien game- and it gets mad props for recapturing the feel of the Ridley Scott's '79 movie. But stealthing around as the Alien in AVP2 is still tons more fun.

Had no idea there were this many Alien games....

And most suck out loud.

Definitely check out the new PREY. I'm on it now, getting closer to the end, and it's simply amazing. Lots of story, good FPS action, level-tree with power-ups like Bioshock, etc. Really nice.

Dishonored was also pretty good. Only played the first one, but the world is very detailed and unique.

You might also want to check out Resident Evil 7. Not your traditional FPS, but it's an incredible experience.

Singularity is definitely an under-appreciated gem.

Titanfall 2 is a recent one that was quite entertaining.

Dishonored was fantastic. (STOMPS all over Bioshock Infinite IMO)

These three games offer fantastic and varied FPS gaming experiences.
 
Subnautica. Although it's a stretch calling it a "shooter", even though it's first person.

You can also try the newer Far Cry games (my favorite is Far Cry 4, I quite enjoyed the story too) or Ghost Recon: Wildlands (its story is not that great though)

I think there is nothing wrong with the story. It felt real in a way because you're not the centerpiece of the story, it's not really about you. You can imagine it like you're a mercenary group from Jagged Alliance on the field.

I don't know. All you can try is compatibility modes and start going on an Internet quest. It's too bad we don't even see these cleared on GOG because of stupid copyright issues that are frankly long since irrelevant but I digress.
 
I know, a day late and a dollar short, but I just started "Homefront: The revolution" again, I also like Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3" . For sheer, stupid shoot 'em up fun (not first person, tho) is Saints Row the Third, with all the dlc.

Interesting.

I guess I had my head so deeply buried in Counter-Strike from ~1999-2005 that I never even heard of these games.

Presumably they are pretty dated graphically at this point, but for a good game that shouldn't measure.

If you - like me - lack the nostalgia factor for these games, are they still worth playing in 2018?

Yes they are still fun when taken in context.

I liked rage. I was put off due to the people who expected the world. It was the first game released by id in like a decade by that point. There was no living up to the hype.

I found the texture pop in noticable but game breaking when I first played it well after launch. Then I switched to an amd card and it was horrendous. I blame amd and their open go drivers for that one.
 
Also a lot of good rpg and TPS suggestions here.

Alpha protocol is a hidden gem. Like bloodiness it's very flawed, mostly in the fighting mechanics. The writing is top notch though. I love obsidian.

On the obsidian note fallout new Vegas is great. Still not a great shooter though. Everything else makes up for it imo.
 
RAGE was actually a decent game. I think people expected an open world RPG when really it was a rails shooter with driving segments.

I only got around to playing it last year, so I was able to play on almost max settings at 4K (did have to disable texture detail, but that looked crappy anyhow).

I'm still going back and trying to play all the games I missed, it can be somewhat stressful sometimes, but I'm making progress.
 
EDIT: sorry, had not had my second cup of caffeine.

Crysis is good if you want something short, simple, and nice to look at.

You have already played many of the good single player games with the immersive story you are looking for so the list of games might be a little short.

I miss the era of the single player games with the good stories.

I'm going to re-list Subnautica.

That was probably the most enjoyable $25 single player experience i've ever played. The way the story is told (or not told) is totally new and lends itself to a really interesting progression. If you like the ocean, exploration, sci-fi or giant submarines, get this game.

Some awesome suggestions in this thread.

I'll throw another one out. Firewatch. It's not a shooter, but it is played in first person. It's not terribly long, though I took my time with it and ended up finishing it over the course of a few days. It hooked me early on left me feeling real emotions throughout the game. It should be experienced, IMO.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth probably deserves to be mentioned alongside the older ones here like The Suffering, Far Cry, Half-Life, Max Payne, etc.

Also, big thanks to Saturn_V for the links and info on the NOLF games. I have the original discs, but it's mighty nice to see those be made available with support for newer tech. It's a damn shame that a deal couldn't be worked out, as I'd gladly purchase them again on Steam/GOG, but if they don't want my money then I'm happy to replay them via alternate means.
 
I've been looking for the same type of thing, got a little tired of constantly playing multiplayer.

The past 6 months I've replayed through the following or am currently

Every Call of Duty campaign title from the original up to the most recent on hardcore difficulty
Farcry 3, 4, Primal
Alien Isolation (MUST PLAY!!! One of the best games ever, imo)
Metro Last Light
Dishonored 2 (playing now, don't like it that much though, might not finish)
Call of Juarez (awesome little arcade western)
Half Life 2 + Ep 1/Ep 2
Titanfall 2 (great single player)
Jedi Outcast II , Jedi Academy (Basically 3rd person since I just use the lightsaber though)

Still looking for more. Also some good mentions that are 3rd person -

Sniper Elite 4
Splinter Cell Blacklist
Hitman
GTA 4
 
Also to add to my list I just started playing Wolfenstein: Old Blood. I totally forgot I hadn't played this one - I played the Wolfenstein remake new order? or whatever It was and loved that but I think I had thought that old blood was just a DLC or something when I heard about it so I never looked into it. Realizing it's actually a full game and a prequel to New Order I picked it up. It's great so far Im a few hours in. I'm liking it better then the other games though I haven't played the most recent New Colossus yet because of a stupid crash dump error. Definitely recommended though... check out Old Blood.
 
Highly recommend Prey which I just started. It's a harder game then most and a bit of a challenge in the beginning even on normal mode which I loved. I'm maybe 1/4 or 1/3 the way through the game and it's getting easier now that I've got more weapons and abilities and perks. But I'm loving the game style and story. The opening is great!
 
Yeah, Prey was really solid the whole way through. It's really difficult at the beginning, but luckily the enemies mostly stay the same difficulty and you upgrade your gear/stats, so it gets easier.

I don't know how I missed these back in the day, but they seem quite enjoyable.

I have now played through NOLF 1.

Runs excellent i Windows 10, but has some bugs. Any screen overlay (likie when selecting ammo, or using scopes) will result in extremely reduced frame rates to th epoint of being bothersome. High resolutions (I played at 4k) work though, as does 16:9. Despite the overlay problem I was able to complete the game. It was fun, and I got m,ore hours out of it than expected.

The game DOES feel dated, and not just in the graphics department, but also in the relatively shallow depth of the story, but it was still a fun play through. Highly recommended.

Now I have moved on to Nolf 2. Engine seems much improved. No moire overlay problems. high resolutions and 16:9 work fine (but 16:9 does cause some config and load screen text to be cut off.) Recommend setting a 4:3 resolution during control configuration, and then once all controls are configured, swithing to 16:9.

Right now I am stuck though. I got about 2 minutes into the initial mission of Nolf 2, when I had a "this application has stopped responding" type of crash, and now, I cant start it anymore at all with the main executable. I am troubleshooting.
 
To follow up, Nolf2 seems to crash whenever I talk to the robotic bird in the initial mission.

Also, it will crash on launch if it reads my 4k resolution fro the config files. If I use the launch configuration to return it to 1024x768, or some other traditional resolution, it will then launch normally, and I can start the game up again, and switch to my preferred 4k resolution in the menus, and continue playing that that resolution.

Not quite sure if I'll be able to get past the robotic bird that causes the crash for me though, and if I do, if this game is sensitive enough to crash every time I talk to an NPC.

I guess we'll find out.

There's a command line hack over at Widescreen Gaming Forum for 16:9 NOLF2...give that a try if you haven't already.

Still stuck in my NOLF playthrough. No heath regens and unlimited and unrestricted game saves... how did we ever manage?
