Wild speculation time: Nvidia Ampere might launch as GeForce GTX 2070 and 2080 on April 12th

I've seen this article making the rounds on meta news sites like this and honestly it's just garbage until you have silicon you can buy. It doesn't really matter if it's just a cut down volta mod, or an entirely new piece of silicon made for gaming scenarios only.

Whatever they release will be their new x80 line and all of the lesser chips will be based off of its architecture. However, if there's anything to read from the Volta release last year, we know that Nvidia has had that product in fab for over a year now, and would have perfected the process. What is more likely is that they are making a more cut down gaming specific chip that will be much smaller, cheaper to make, and more profitable for them. There are so many parts of the Tesla part that make no sense for gaming scenarios, that it's like using dynamite to light your grill. We all know it works, but why waste that much resource when you can just start it with a sleek, efficient long stem lighter that gets the job done effortlessly, with less power and cost.

Throw in the volatility of the HBM2 market, and the speed bumps and availability of GDDR6, and boom we have a winner.

Are we taking bets on if the next Gen will be as big a jump in performance as the 10 series was over the 9 series?

I'd bet the farm its just as big a jump, but even if only 1% faster then a 1080 Ti and 1% less power, it won't matter because it'll be permanently sold out anyway.

Can't wait to see GDDR6 destroy worlds.

I thinking it will be around a 50-60% improvement across the board. Expecting a Titan X to drop 2-3 months after the small chip which is about perfect time to come out with the delayed 4k 144hz g-sync displays.

I'm on the high end of that range. But I don't think we'll see another gaming Titan. If we do see a card above the Ti it will be sold with different branding.

The most interesting part in my view is what GDDR6 memory speeds we will see from the start. 14Ghz, 16Ghz and 18Ghz are all in production, last one being Samsung only for now.

Even if the plain 1080 replacement only uses 14Ghz, it´s still 40% increase from previous if we exclude the few 11Ghz parts. 60% with 16Ghz. But even 40% and increased shader count places it above the current 1080 TI.

GDDR6 is likely to be very widely used as stated from top to bottom.

I am ready for a 1080 replacement from day 1 :)

Whatever they call it, it´s really just a gaming Volta with reduced/removed Tensor/FP64.

Lets see if we can get the sweet sweet 15% performance bump over the 1080ti.

I'll have to start conditioning myself not to fall for it and actually wait for the 1180Ti.

IMO it's just what upgrade cycle you're currently on. If you wait for the 1180ti, you'll be waiting around for a year while you could be gaming. If this really does go on sale in April, the argument could be made that 1080ti owners should have waited for this instead of getting a comparatively minor upgrade. There's always something better coming next year.

Well, here is a little something-something from a youtube channel Cryptomined (not a plug, just some info):

According to him, the new nVidia stuff is not due out til summer.

Not really. It is not like a 1080 is garbage. I have a 1080 and going to wait til the Ti comes out before upgrading.

...and then you're in a situation where the 1180 will be coming out the following year and you can always wait for that and get an even bigger improvement. It's a matter of whether you're on a 1,2,3, or 4+ year upgrade cycle. There is always something better around the corner. It's not much different from the way iPhones used to have "S" models every other year.

Depending on his needs waiting for the 11xx Ti is not a bad idea, though he may be waiting till 2019 though.

Could see myself making that jump if next gen starts hitting 120hz at 3440 resolution.

One things for sure, they'll be very hard to get your hands on.

Its going to be a bloodbath trying to get one of these

1- mining has showed some stability for the last week or so. It looks like it may last long term

2- if these are as good as rumored, every gamer will want one too

3- everyone will have their tax refund money

I can game perfectly well on my 1080Ti. It's not that I need a new video card, it's more about Huang dangling a shiny new toy in front of me.
Anyway I'm decided to wait for the Ti model and get a 4k screen.
Going from 970 to 1080 was a massive upgrade for me, going to the 1080Ti afterwards was quite a bit less noticeable.

Not necessarily, like all releases, if you reallly want one, you'll get one, if you wait for the slighest bit you're fucked, and will be paying more for the next batch.

Man, I'm still rockin' my GTX 760 (*knocks on wood*)! 'Course I don't game anymore, or when I do it's old games. I would like to have feasible iRay render speeds, though, but I can wait to see if prices come down. A year or even two would be no big. I figure the longer I wait, the better card I'll get for my money.

I think prices normalizing over the long term is a good bet. For one thing, eventually the mining market will be saturated. There won't be nearly as many new people jumping in, and buys will mostly be people making marginal upgrades, which are much less motivated buys. For another, companies will have had more time to increase supply to meet demand, and more reason to do so.

Random thought: warranties may be where the rubber meets the road. Might GPU makers come up with some way to track the "miles" users put on their cards? Miners are currently equivalent to people who drive their cars 100k miles a year, but get the same insurance rates as drivers who drive 10k miles a year.

No, they really aren't. Usage pattern of gaming is arguably worse for GPU's than mining - with constant, abrupt heating up and cooling down cycles that stress components - GPU's run at high or max overclocks and voltage. Whereas with mining its lower sustained temperatures, and at 70-75% of factory clocks/volts so less stress on components.

So in your analogy its like 100k miles of slow driving delivery van versus 10k miles of drag races thrashing the engine.

I'm just going by what I read here in comments, so for all I know, you're right. But didn't nVidia try to market a card specifically for miners that had like a 4 month warranty? And is it true that a huge (disproportionate) number of people trying to get their cards replaced are miners (course that could be partly due to miners being in business and more prone to seeing their cards as investments)? Oh, and why is the word that buying a used card these days is riskier because of all the cards ragged out by miners?

The mining cards AMD and Nvidia made was in reality failed GPUs that went to the trashbin and got picked up again. They failed regular QA.

My Alienware monitor (in sig) already has an (overclocked) 120Hz @ 3440x1440 (from the stock 100Hz). While my GTX 1080 works quite well in it, I can't hit every game to high or better settings @ 120Hz, and I think the same would still be true even with an overclocked 1080 Ti. I'm looking for Ampere/Turing/Whatever for that extra performance boost; in my case, a TI Founder's Edition would work nicely.

I have been eyeing that monitor lately due to my big screen having issues...

Going to disagree with you there. There might be a point (long time from now) where a few coins exist and the rest are niche/non existent. But for now I would expect new coins to keep coming out, varying in difficulty/profitability and driving some people/big miners to keep “adding” new cards to their collection.

I do not see the average home miner buying “mining” GPUs unless they break/hinder mining performance on “gaming” GPUs because it will affect their ability to resale cards when they upgrade. Or the mining card pulls 30% more hash, sols, whatever rate to give them a reason to buy the non gaming variant.

Also new people will keep jumping in until heavy regulation or confusing as shit rules are put into place that deters people from mining. Even the current market price hasn’t stopped new players from jumping in. While ROI is higher due to buying cards at a higher price they still stand to make money later on down the road.

As for upping supply. They need to be careful with that to, if a surplus of used 10xx/Vegas hit the market a lot of people may be willing to buy those and ignore new cards. But I would still think most of the cards may sell out.

One things for sure, they'll be very hard to get your hands on.

I highly doubt that. When the new batch of cards come from nvidia, you won't have trouble getting one. That won't be a thing.

Honestly not sure if you're being sarcastic... Plenty of nVidia card have seen shortages, sometimes for months after release, from 7800 GTXs to GTX 1080s.

Maybe in North America and Russia it might be hard to get a card. But Europe and Asia you just buy one. I expect to get one within the first week or so after release to account for logistics.

Yeah, new cards are often not in such supply that there are just stocks everywhere ready to go. But you order them / get a reservation at a brick n mortar, and you'll get one pretty soon.

We're an impatient lot these days, expecting absolute instant gratification at all times, but sometimes the wait is really just a couple days.

Not a fan of this speculation at all but they have a point. If cards on the shelf are $1200 and suddenly retailers have an abundance of brand new $600 2080 cards that perform twice as good, they are not going to drop prices on the old cards to $500 range. Not going to happen.
This future pricing is not going to look good for anyone.

1200$ for what? A 1080? No.

1200$ for a 1080TI? Maybe in a single region.

Also Nvidia isn't selling it at that price, The markup is done at retailers. That's also very clear if you look on a global scale.

The article is nothing but another dumbass clickbait to fuel some drama.

The 2080 will likely cost 699, worst case 799.

For reference in Europe you can buy in stock without even a cheaper backorder, a 1080 for ~670USD without VAT and a 1080TI for ~890USD. Both custom and OC.

There is simply no way nvidia would launch normal (non titan class) products at those price points.

1. They sell to OEMs who sell systems which could not absorb those sorts of cost levels (even at OEM discounts)
2. They would never give AMD a bay window of price advantage like that. That's basically abdicating the entire "upper mainstream" market.

Now it is possible retailers try to price things at absurd levels to see if anyone will still bite. Advice: don't bite.

No sources cited. It's pure head cannon. Michael Pachter gives better analysis, and he's almost always wrong.

We had this same senseless speculation during the Litecoin boom and more recently when the 1080 Ti was released.

$800 for the 2080. I've been saying that for several months. I'm still pinning it right there.

and I agree with you on the content of the article. Junk

This quote in particular

With this in mind the GeForce GTX 2080 should land at somewhere between 30-50% more performance than what GTX 1080 SLI is capable of, but with lower power consumption and improved performance at higher resolutions.

maybe he meant LESS, because there's NO WAY A 2080 IS GOING TO BE 30-50% faster than a 1080 SLI setup. NO WAY.

Haha, exactly! Maybe a non working SLI case? ;)

i would be happy to see gains like going from 980ti to 1080ti... i did mistake to buy into the hype of 1080 at the time and it at stock had some major issues beating my 980ti by something significant ontop of running very hot and overclocking poorly, it was a zotac.. not the a cheap card even or fe. it was very much disapointed, but 1080ti i felt i did a good buy i got it at launch so i had it just in time to play my favourite game mass effect andromeda everything maxxed with 1440p and high fps. it really was like 2x 980ti sli without scaling issues, and it is not much ahead of my 980ti sli score in 3dmark lol. but i didnt have 980ti sli when i got it, i rma one card coz it shot sparks from pcie connector and i got a new card for half price with full refund on card i buy for much more. and i really didnt like the immense heat from these two cards in my pc either, my home i was getting cooked slowly.

It has a DVI port yet I would get the card just that.
