Tesla's Semi Truck is Really Fast

i have been saying they really need to add such to all electric vehicles. That way those in their prius can pull up to a stop sign and "rev" their engines to make it sound like an old muscle car

There is no magic in traction control. Also its not just traction control. Electric engines are capable of producing the torque faster than ICE engines. There isnt a "transmission" in the same way there is in an ICE car which is what causes ICE cars to lag on acceleration (as gears shift).
Electric motors aren’t engines. Making the ICE acronym rather silly. Especially since given the context of cars/trucks I believe all the engines are internal combustion.

But mostly I just have a vendetta against that acronym because of the stupidity of BP refineries. They used to require everything in a operating unit to wear a magnet that said ICE on it, redundancy basically, however they also made people put those placards onto fully electric man lifts with no combustion components. Pure idiocy that too years to go away.

To actually add on to your comment about transmissions. In turbo charged vehicles there is also additional lag while the turbo(s) spin up.
 
Lolwut. Have you never been to a truck stop? There are completely separate fuel lanes for four wheelers and big trucks.. They are usually even on completely opposite sides of the lot

Yeah, but fuel lanes, you're supposed to fuel up and leave, or shuttle into the yard. You're not supposed to park there for an hour or more. As "pump" space is limited.

And I don't know how many stops are gonna burn the gobs of cash necessary to put these in their lots.

Remember, 99% of the truckers who come through are decent enough people.

The final remnant are the ones who give truckers a bad name. Steal anything that's not nailed down. And if it's nailed down, steal a pry bar or claw hammer first. And if they can't steal it, they vandalize it.

Surely you mean, more widely, turbine engines.
 
so his usable range just went from (500 promised, 400 realistic) to 250 miles? then he can sleep over night to do another short run while it charges lol
 
And its not really an "issue" per se but just the way it works. Its an "issue" if you forget that and wanted that thrust immediately ;)


Or when flying a turboprop, and need that SHP to spin that speed reducer a little faster ;)
 
I'm wondering how 'fuel taxes' are going to be handled. Diesel and Gasoline taxes help pay for the roads. Right now EV's aren't taxed like that... but when enough of them are on the road, they will be.

I was going to say they'd do the math for joules in diesel vs what the battery charger use fee

It has never really gotten traction but over the years I have seen Congress raise the issue of using GPS trackers to replace the per gallon tax on gas. Here is one time I found in a quick google search: https://www.thenewspaper.com/news/28/2899.asp

Personally I think our tax system needs a major overhaul but thats an entirely different subject.

As long as it's an optional feature, I don't need a noisy car, I wanna enjoy the sound of the wind and leaves when I drive through a scenic forest, that's my kinda jam, I don't want the sound of the "engine" to take away from that personally.

To each his own of course, it shouldn't be hard, in fact I bet there's a third party solution out there already.

I'm guessing the batteries will be in parallel, so I wonder if there won't be an option for multiple charging ports, one for each actual battery pack.

It's traction control. If those electric motors leaped directly to peak torque without it, it'd sit and spin the tires. An ICE diesel hits peak torque (1000+ ft/lbs) at relatively low RPM (1200 or so) and has absolutely zero traction control beyond a simple differential. They rely on the weight of cargo to keep the drive tires stable.
Put the two trucks on a line, and the Tesla would smoke the diesel because the diesel would sit and spin tires running bobtail. Put them both on a line with an 80,000lb load and they'll run neck and neck.

Now, give the diesel some efficient form of traction control and line them both up bobtail, and whatever margin the tesla wins by is then because of the electric engines.

Aside from dumping the clutch, never could smoke the tires, geared too low
 
People saying truckers don't like sex appeal in their trucks have obviously never seen the paint schemes.
 
Charging time isn't that bad considering most short haul trucks are sitting at their pick up or drop off for that amount of time anyways.


So to hell with team drivers, then?

Where the fuck are the owners going to charge a bank of batteries sporting that kind of capacity in a relatively quick interval?

Diesel stations are literally everywhere.
Tesla semi truck "quick" charge stations are not.

Most brand new diesel rigs are in that price range. I was expecting $250k+ personally.

$150K base price for ~300 miles range. The ~500 mile range option will be considerably more. There's speculation that tacking on a bunch of other options/equipment, and Tesla's new "savior" could push upwards of $400K per.

So it costs roughly the same as a new Semi (my friend in the industry said 150k is not unreasonable if its a nice truck, 200k is possible if its all tricked out) and uses no gas. Yeah I think they could have good luck with it.

"Sex appeal"? I know plenty of people who think electric cars are so much sexier because they can get to 60mph faster than ICE cars. Why? They cant really answer that...just that its cooler to get there faster.

A car's 0-60 time has been the defacto e-peen metric since the advent of them, and certainly since muscle cars. But now that EV leaves ICE standing still at the line, it's "Hey man, 0-60 doesn't matter. The race doesn't matter. Why are we in such a hurry anyway?" Comedy.
 
The reason that tesla is so damned fast off the line is traction control magic because electric engines.

Well, that and electric motors have all their torque available at any RPM unlike infernal combustion engines. If that's what you meant by "traction control magic" then sure, why not :)

What kind of outlets do these trucks need to plug in? I assume multiple 240v or equivalent. Charging at loading/offloading I assume would be pretty measly with 110v.

If your managing a fleet of these you just swap battery packs and go on. Throw the depleted one on the pile, the wheels keep moving. Heck it would be automated with a robot. Faster than filling a fuel tank. Still have to give truckers time to piss or eat I suppose.

With commercial fleets you are talking completely different scale vs me parking a car in my garage. Indeed electric vehicles may make far more sense for commercial trucking than for personal vehicles because it's far easier to manage things like swapping battery packs with a small number of large fleets then millions of individual car owners.

There are plenty of fleet only fuel stations around me already so it's not like electric vehicles bring a new concept as far as fleet fuel management goes.

Exactly now its it just doesn't sound the same... And I think I've read something about the smell so there is that... Next it will be the dangers of neck pain due to the excessive acceleration... Deep, serious concerns against electrics.

That would be ideal but I thought these are built deep into the truck because... you know... lithium goes kinda of explody when it hits stuff.

Further the batterys would have their own heating and cooling system to ensure they maintain the non-explody state under normal operation which may be complicated to disconnect quickly.
 
Tesla has previously said their semi truck can do 0-60 in 5 seconds and loaded with 80K pounds it can do that in 20 seconds. I would have to see that to believe it and now I've seen a video that makes me tend to believe Tesla and their claims. Check this out.

I've actually been wondering when after market auto accessory companies would be marketing sound systems to electrics (or really quiet ICE) to make cars sound different. Think of the DLC sound packs they could sell .... steam powered, turbine thruster, boat motor, indy car, etc.

I have seen even better. once..LONG ago when i was hitch hiking, this one little car was pissing the truckers off. so they coordinated with some way ahead of them to to have one in each lane, 2 lanes, driving the same speed. Little shit was stuck behind when they then moved up from behind and then blocked him from braking as they then changed lanes to drive him off the road

was funny as hell
