In a report from Business Insider, Jonathan Kay, chief operating officer of app analytics firm Apptopia goes into several of the ways that app developers use to get people hooked on using them. The article is incredibly detailed, going from Instagram's push notifications, to Twitter using the spinning wheel for loading in the same way as used in slot machines.

Fascinating stuff for sure. We have seen for years how companies use subliminal messages in ads and the like, so seeing how it's implimented in apps is new territory. I'm also happy to say I have exactly zero of the apps mentioned in the article on any of my devices, dirty sneaky devs can't trick me.

For another, app makers are using deliberate techniques to attract your attention. They aren't simply relying on you to come to them whenever you have downtime. "I think people want to be sucked in," Kay said. "Then it becomes a game of who can be more clever at grabbing that attention."

Their methods to get me hooked on apps is all for naught. I do not own a so-called smart phone nor am I on windows 10. I prefer to have a full fledged program I can install on my computer rather than some limited, cut-down mobile application or app. ;)

I don't use any of those apps mentioned in the article on my smartphone.

Come to think about it, I use my smartphone to make calls and send a few texts, I must be a neanderthal.

I don't use any of those apps. I don't play any mobile "games" either.

If you're on Twitter I need to follow you, us luddites should stick together ;) .

I still don't understand twitter, and how it works.

I don't understand instagram either. Why would you want to plaster your daily life on the internet ?
I mean I don't mind it when attractive women do it, I just don't know what's in it for them.

Money. A hot woman can make a very comfortable living these days by doing nothing but posting on Instagram.

Money and self validation.

I didn't even knew that instagram actually paid money. But I assume that's only a thing after tens of thousands of followers. Most posters do it with a few dozen followers.

Instagram doesn't, as far as I know. It was all product placement before they cracked down on that, but the business model changed to get around those silly regs. Besides, plenty of models still opine about the newest protein shake they're using in essay form if one ever bothers to read the comments.

I must be from another planet as I find the whole smartphone app thing a truly boring but fairly necessary experience. Certainly no games on my phone but then my phone isn't my BFF and I like my phone to be able to do 2-3 days on a charge, just in case.

Thanks for the article. I'll see if the team can implement some of these ideas in our corporate in-house apps.

Give it time.. There will eventually be an [H] Casino sub that will have microtransactions that will control how much and how often you allowed to post..
It'll be tied to your credit report and your public information giving your Post-Worthiness score a weight that will determine how much you pay per post credit..
The less you shitpost, the lower the price... But you still have to watch a 30 second ad per post... And it forces your browser to min monero for those 30 seconds.

Then the banner alerts will now be pushed to the desktop and your mobile devices.
And for your convenience it will also post to your facebook daily to remind your friends to hate you while begging for credits if they sign up.

THE FUTURE!

... will be an awful place.

I don't have any way to purchase any apps due to not having any payment information in the store. I use free apps only.

Oh god - I hate crap like this. I work with clients that want us to develop apps from time to time. A frequent request - they want us to make their app go viral. I just stare through them anymore. Another feature request - wants the app to make millions of dollars. I'm trying to figure out how to add these as features when I do my estimates. If you pay me more, I can make it X amount more viral or can make you more money.
Damn...wish I would have one of app store lottery a few years ago. I wouldn't have to deal with some of these people now.
