I wouldn't be surprised if console specs and hardware revisions become less and less a thing as streaming/internet speeds become better. I imagine at some point, these consoles will become more 'streaming services' ala Netflix and run on a variety of hardware.

I hate this idea, but I think you're right, and we will start seeing more and more of this.

After reading that article, I feel like PS4 Pro games actually will be hitting something close to 4K image quality. Certainly what they were talking about was way more complex than the standard 1080P upscaling you get built into TVs.

I even opened some of the images on my 4K TV and they looked practically as good as anything I've seen running native on my PC. There might be small differences if you inspect closely, but honestly it looked great to me.

I'm interested in seeing the first new Naughty Dog title specifically built with the PS4 Pro in mind

Yeah, I'm not sure I'd compare 4K/HDR to going from black and white to color. That's a bold statement. It is a big deal, though.

so how big of an upgrade is the PS4 Pro for 1080p TV owners?...is it worth it or do you need a 4k TV with HDR to really appreciate the difference?

The person making the Black & White to color comparison with HDR is HAF. It's better, but it's only incrementally better than 1080p and normal color. I think SD to 720p is a much bigger leap and Black & White to color is laughably bigger.

I do not own one, but Digital Foundy states that PRO owners on 1080p actually get upgraded visuals, as the games are usually rendered at 1800p resolution and downscaled (essentially DSR) to get a really clean, shimmer and jaggy-free image. Also, there are some games which allow the same fidelity as the PS4gimp version, but an unlocked framerate that usually hits 60FPS.

Not all games do this, though.

There are a few games that show improvements in 1080p, but not a ton. Here's a list of which games and what the upgrades are:
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/every-ps4-pro-game-that-is-and-isnt-getting-an-upg/1100-6443385/
If you're hoping for 60fps on existing games or massive differences, you're probably going to be disappointed.

I think the PS4 Pro is good for a few groups:

1. You don't currently own a PS4 and dropping an extra $100 is no big deal.
2. You're a current PS4 owner and 4K TV owner + you have the ability to sell it for at least $150.

Otherwise, I wouldn't do it. The Xbox One S is a better item for people who want to watch movies and it's cheaper to boot. Improvements to 1080p are minimal and even more minimal when you don't have HDR.

This might change, though. We'll have to see what Sony does to push devs to take advantage of the new horsepower. Amazon is already discounting them, reviews are mixed, and people are definitely having connection issues. I own one and I *still* hope the concept tanks. I have no desire to keep up with the joneses every 2-3 years and be stuck in a permanent haves/have-nots situation.

next PS4 Pro update will make more games look better on older TVs

software version 5.50 adds a supersampling mode to the PS4 Pro...on the Xbox One X, that translates to higher frame-rates, improved visual clarity and more detailed graphics on select titles when the console is connected to a 1080p TV

Here's how Sony describes the situation on PS4 Pro: "Certain games already have the 'supersampling' benefits as part of their 'PS4 Pro Enhanced' feature set, but this new mode can enhance the experience for those games that don't already have the feature."...

I love my ps4 pro first console in over 20 years and I don't want a 4k TV even more now !

Nice. My only issue is that generally if you run in full 4K on the Pro, you have to deal with locked 30 FPS in most games. I'd rather go for ~60 FPS than full resolution in pretty much any game.

This. I really don't notice the res bump. Some games I think look better when at 1080 cause they up the settings and of course the 60fps. I think for both xbox and ps4 the 4k is still a gimmick.

I am pretty sure my AV receiver does 4k upscaling anyway so yeah, same here...I don't notice much of a difference at all between "Performance" and "Resolution".

Same here, but it seems 60 FPS options are seemingly becoming more common now. At least in the last few games I've played; Nioh, The Last of Us Remastered (which actually has an 1800p 60FPS mode that I didn't notice before when I first got my Pro, I think it only had 1080/60 before, which it still has with higher shadow quality), and currently Shadow of the Colossus all support 60 FPS modes. I commonly prefer those modes as well over any higher res or upgraded graphics. I wish Horizon had offered a high framerate mode, but honestly with its motion blur voodoo and rock-solid frame rate and frame pacing, it really doesn't need it and with how gorgeous it looks I'd hate to lose any of its image quality.

Wait... the PS4 Pro makes you NOT want a 4K tv more? That makes no sense. You're REALLY missing out especially 4K + HDR.

I was just happy that I could SS with 1080p on the pro and it would hold me over. Ironically one of my TVs died so I splurged for a 4k and you are correct. Soon as I fired up HZD in 4k + HDR I shat myself. I am in love. Now if only every other game could come close.

Honestly games run at higher FPS and to me look better at the 1080 setting. That is how I feel when switching between the 2 modes. 4k is still a gimmick on consoles.

I could not disagree with you more buddy. I own a PS4 Pro and a Xbox One X and the "4K" games on either whether native or checker-boarded look phenomenal and not a gimmick at all.
I own a pro also and don't find it impressive. 1080/60fps is better to me.

You're just hard to impress then. :p

I honestly notice a huge difference in for instance Watch Dogs 2, Infamous, and many others. I think what Sony was able to do to get games to look that good for $400 is very impressive.

Everything looks fantastic in stills. Once the games start moving around, a decent number of those games don't even stay a 30fps all of the time. I'd rather have 1080p/60, too. Animation trumps still graphics to me.
The Xbox One X is closer to my ideal in games like Gears and Forza, but Sony has all the good exclusive games ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Definitely agree. I've had my Xbox One X only for about 2 weeks, and while the hardware is incredibly impressive I REALLY wish Microsoft would step up their 1st-party development. If I could have Xbox One X level performance in the PS4 i'd be really happy. It's funny too because I only play Xbox with my fiance and two of my best friends and even that is incredibly rarely; in-short I hardly ever use my Xbox One. I had a S before upgrading to the X, and I said to myself I wouldn't get the X b/c I never use my Xbox anymore but the geek-itch was too strong so I ended up grabbing one anyway. I will say that the performance difference is incredible. I mean I played Gears of War 4, Forza 7, Halo 5... those games looked and performed phenomenally at the native 4K and 60FPS especially Forza and Halo. It's truly a impressive piece of hardware, but we really need Microsoft to fucking get on the saddle and out with more exclusives.

I've had the X since release, and I really only bought it because of that itch as well. PS4 gets far more use, but I do wish it was as competent as the X overall.

that's the catch-22 for most people...Xbox X is a lot more powerful but there's nothing to play on it (console exclusives)...maybe Sony will release another refresh...2nd gen Pro :D

I know you're joking, but I just looked and the PS4 released 11/15/2013 and the Pro released 11/10/2016. Almost 3 years to the day, which makes me wonder if will we be seeing the PS5 next year in 2019? It would make sense wouldn't it since Sony called the Pro a "mid-life refresh?"

I think Sony is still outselling Microsoft by a healthy margin so I don't see them panicking and releasing anything else until the PS5...maybe if the Xbox X was selling better it might cause Sony to rethink things

I'm not sure Sony feels any pressure from MS's Xbox One X at the moment. It's outselling them, but it's not like either are setting shelves ablaze. I mean, most of the seriously hardcore graphics people know to go the PC route. Even the casual enthusiasts tend to stop at basic buzzwords like "4K" without going any further. They're using smoothmotion anyway. They just think modern games are choppy and have lots of motion blur.

I'm hoping we'll finally see the Xbox One X get some real love with RDR2. If they're shooing for 1080p/30 for the launch consoles, there's no reason the X can't do 1080p/60 or 4K/30. The PS4 Pro can probably do some approximation of that with some scaling, too. It's just going to come down to Rockstar. If they don't do something like that, I don't have much hope for either console refresh.

Between Horizon: Zero Dawn, Last of Us Remaster, FF XV, Monster Hunter World, and the new Shadow of the Colossus...I've definitely gotten my money's worth from my PS4 Pro.

Definitely same here, I've been spending more of my time on this console than any other platform for the past year or so I've been back into gaming. I got it just for Naughty Dog games, but have been pleasantly surprised by the above exclusives as well and very much look forward to Days Gone, God of War, and Death Stranding.

PS4 Pro has been great for me. Played Last of Us, finally, and it looks great at 4K. Infamous Second Son was also awesome, as was Ratchet and Clank. There's definitely games that can run close to 60fps in 4K.

I've been very happy with my PS4 Pro. 4K [checkerboard] and HDR looks fantastic on the LG OLEDs.

But I'll be completely honest. I have my launch PS4 hooked up to my second 55" OLED C6 and it still holds up surprisingly well.

anyone here with an LG 2017 OLED that does a lot of gaming on it?...any issues with image retention or worse?...my last plasma set had some slight burn in so now I'm extra careful with my OLED

2016 C6 OLED here. I pretty much only game on it with my PS4 Pro - Zero image retention issues since I got the TV in October 2016.

I got my C7 several months ago (doesn't feel that long) and I mainly game on it, with the occasional movie on the weekends. From PS4 to Switch, it gets used 2-3 hours a day on weekdays, bit more on weekends (generally). It hasn't exhibited any sort of issues at all. Additionally, I'm the sort of person that shuts off their tv and console if I'm going to be away for more than 10 minutes at a time too, so nothing really runs idly. Force of habit I suppose.

2016 LG OLED C6 and B6 owner here. Been gaming on these two TVs and using them almost daily. No burn in; at worst I once had very minor image retention that went away after about 10 minutes.
