News is a bit slow this morning unless you want to discuss things like Salon off-setting advertising losses with using its readers CPUs for crypto-mining, or Chrome putting native ad-blocking into effect tomorrow, or HTC's phone president leaving, or Elon telling us why the Falcon Heavy booster took a swim, or Google AMP sucking for email, or QuakeCon being announced for 2018.

However one thing did catch my eye in my email box this morning. It looks like Thor will be returning with a new hammer named Stormbreaker and a new eye! That is great, because I imagine that wielding a hammer requires good peripheral vision.

That's a "hammer"? The comic images appear more like a hammer with a smaller axe on the back, this looks totally reversed with the axe head being much more prominent.

I don't even care anymore both DC and Marvel have done their part to ruin comics..........

Seems like the hammer part is starting to take a back seat to the AXE part.....I did thoroughly enjoy Ragnarok though!

Ruined them with movies or ruined the things they created some other way? Like most things, they evolved. Evidence - Golden Age turned into Silver which gave way to Bronze and now Modern.

Storm Breaker is the name of Beta Ray Bill's hammer.......
Wonder how Thor gets it? Movie will likely explain, in a comic book way that can be reversed at any time. See comics for the last 20 years. Just enjoy it and don't think too hard.

And Salon actually moving to mine coins if you use an ad-blocker? No, just no. I wonder if someone's PC overheats they will replace it? The internet has become the most slick salesman bs lie you could ever imagine. LOL

Looks more like Jarnbjorn than Stormbreaker which is Beta Ray's gold axe. I just hope he also gets Toothnasher as well. Asgardian goat power FTW!

Half hammer, and half axe...Also his new eye looks just like his other one in those photos. Unless they are referring to the eye patch photo?

That "hammer" looks like an axe head with Groot's cock attached.

Salon using Free Market Capitalism to push a Liberal Socialist agenda? Say it ain't so!

Just shows what geek I am. . . .stormbreaker was originally the name of the hammer that Beta Ray Bill had in Thor #337.

edit: Just noticed the others who posted the same.

As far as how he got it. My guess it's just part of the many movie rewrites. Thor Ragnarok was mostly Planet Hulk and Beta Ray Bill was actually the one who was briefly there not Thor. Hulk nearly killed him when they fought.

Lol at the Salon piece. They talk about mining block chain and how they will be using it to further research into world changing technology and then only mention examples like folding@home and some Grid projects and one way to pay for bail for misdemeanors.. Pander to the audience much? These cunts are just going to be mining Mondero or something like that and using it for profit, not fighting cancer or curing world hunger lol. God I hate them there lol

Wha?

One of the articles he linked, they said this about their mining Monero

used for humanitarian and scientific projects such as helping research how proteins fold, to aid in biological discovery or helping pay for misdemeanor prisoners’ bail, or to see if we can better predict the impact of climate change.

Your spare computing power can even help analyze astronomical signals to figure out if extraterrestrials are trying to contact us. Some scholars have proposed using spare computing power to help secure voting and verify the integrity of democratic elections.

They are mining Monero. For money. But they play it off to their super left base about how it can do all these wonderful things and sprinkle in 2 of the most SJW topics they can as icing on the cake. They couldn't just come out and say hey, we're doing this to make money to cover in the gaps in ad shortages, no they had to play it off like it was this great amazing thing lol. But that's Salon for ya lol

I really have no comment on the hammer as I was never that much into the comics for Thor honestly, could care less unless he comes out with the Donkey Kong hammer. But if you want to talk about Thor I guess my take would be focus on him as he was in the end of Thor 3, much cooler that way in my book

Thor was my favorite super hero in my comics collecting years. I've been pretty disappointed with his portrayal in the Marvel movies. Ragnarok was the best version of movie Thor, by far. Still not close to the comic Thor, though.

these movies will never live up to hardcore fans' expectations. thus, the reason why movie companies are straying away from original comic storylines.

All I know is the Deadpool movie did wonders for the price my my New Mutants 98, sold it for almost $400. I'm hoping the eventual Gambit movie will do something similar for my X-Men 266. Some of my Thor's sold well but then I didn't have any 1st appearances except for Beta Ray Bill.

Except they do. But they do a crappy job. Hulk's part was taken from Planet Hulk, cut to almost nothing and jammed into T:R. They took just enough that they couldn't do it properly now if they wanted to.

I hate the Planet Hulk story line and much prefer the abridged version that's in Thor: Ragnarok. That said, many movies do cut good stories down and convolute movies with barely fleshed out stories in an effort to try and cram as much fan service and attempt to create an original looking story from that source material as possible. It usually hurts films to do this but Thor did a good job of it. Justice League and The Dark Knight Rises are examples of how not to steal from or truncate stories I the comics to create a film plot. I know lots of people like the Christopher Nolan films but it's third installment was weak.

Examples of how not to do this are drawing from the Reign of the Supermen arc in Justice League. Another is how they pulled heavily from Knightfall, No Man's Land and the Dark Knight Returns for The Dark Knight Rises. Neither movie did their source material any justice. In fact, those story arcs were good enough to make into movies on their own. Well, except the Dark Knight Returns which has it's moments but is overall not a good story. It was written by a man who's work seems to yo yo between excellent and utter trash. I feel like Frank Miller often has very little grasp on the characters he writes for when he's doing something he had no hand in creating. His treatment of Superman, Green Arrow and most notably Dick Grayson in the Dark Knight Returns and it's follow up speak for themselves. It shows how little he understood the characters or their universe. Certainly, there are elements of his story that are good and had a major impact on the industry and Batman himself. I just wish more Batman materials going forward borrowed from Frank Miller's excellent imagery and little else.

I actually felt that Doomsday and the Death of Superman was handled better in Batman v. Superman than it was in the comics. Retroactively, they did work to make Doomsday more than just a plot device to kill Superman, but he wasn't an interesting character and his hatred of Superman made no sense in his initial appearance. What they did in the film and how he died made sense in the film. You can truncate stories and do a better job with them, but you have to look at DC's animated movies to see how that's done. Superman: Doomsday was a good way to do it although, it still doesn't do the story arc justice.

We watched it in 4k last night and loved it. The 4k upscale was o.k.(not as impressive as I've seen with other upscales). I agree with you(Dan_D) in regards to this abridged version of planet hulk. The whole time I'd heard of this while it was in production I was cringing at them calling it ragnarok and then mixing the Surtur story into it. All 'n' all I thought it was pretty brilliant the way they combined and re-wrote many story lines to make this feel truly original. I normally loathe such things. On a grumpy day I could nitpick a number of items but overall I really thought it was incredible and the best of the 3 movies. Really looking forward to watching the 3d version later this week.

Toy company probably already had a mold for that shape of axehead... er I mean "hammer", so just squish them out en mas.

I really hope Thor isn't getting a hammer because of toys though, I get in cartoons it's all about the toys, and ok it's a Disney movie now so there is a high chance that this is all toy related but damnit did anyone who wrote this see Ragnarok? Thor was straight up Raiden from Mortal Kombat killing everything with lightning punches and what not.

I think it's the reverse when making toys from films. The film product comes first and the toy companies get a glimpse of concept sketches and props ahead of time to do their work. Accuracy goes out the window when production props and what not are revised for whatever reason. With cartoons its the reverse with the cartoon being created as a vehicle to sell toys above all else with the toy line driving the show and it's stories. The story of He-Man and the Transformers show us how it's done, while the story of Star Wars toys gives us a glimpse of how it's done in the film industry. Ostensibly, these toy lines set the basic standards for how the process works to this day.

Transformers is the one that's probably best known to the public. Nothing is probably more well known than the reason for the many Transformers deaths in the 1986 movie being driven by those particular toys being discontinued. Season 1 and 2 characters that continued to sell didn't die in the show. The ones that weren't selling were all killed horrendously in the first 15 minutes of the movie.

And it was mostly autobots, because what kid picks a toy car over a toy jet fighter?

Exactly. Not only do the G1 Decepticons outnumber the G1 Autobats by a significant number, but their toys sold better for longer. This is why Starscream continued to appear throughout the shows original run two seasons after his initial death in the show. His toy was still selling long after most of the G1 Autobots were killed and their toys discontinued.
