About 4 weeks ago I decided to buy the dip. Previous to this, I actively avoided anything crypto related. About 2 weeks ago I decided I would put half into mining. The last thing I build was a media box 5 years ago. This is all an awful idea, but here we are.

Mobo: AsRockASRock H110 Pro BTC+, no mining mobo is loved, but this one seemed to garner less hate than other, also newegg ebay sale.
Home Depot Rack: Im going to hang the cards salami drying rack style.
10in radiator Fans: These undervolt nicely down to 3V, and wont be powered by the PSUs
PSUs: PCP&C 1050W


Awaiting 12x 1060 6gb gpus and the SSD.

354 per card is not horrid. welcome to the group
before things got crazy it was common to be around $300 for the 6gb cards. I have some Zotac 1070 ti's showing up soon that I preordered from amazon. 2 showed up that I ordered late december and I have more still waiting shipment. I was OK waiting if it meant MSRP on cards. Instead of chasing more cards I'm trying to get out of the red and be ready to preorder the next round of cards. With the coins being down so far it has been smarter to buy coins than to overpay for hardware.

That reminds me... I need to sell some LTC off and push the money towards the real alts.
 
Why do you need those radiator fans?
Mostly because there will be 1000 watts of gpu/mb/psu in 4ft^3. Then again it may not be needed either way, instead of dicking around with 120mm fans and all the wiring, I just decided to go big. These are 10in fans in a 12in frame and are good for something like 800-850cfm each. At 5 volts they still push a decent amount of air for their size with nearly no noise but you still have the overhead to get crazy and for some reason need 1800cfm of air movement. Ultimately this rig is going to reside near a basement window and the main breaker box. It may become some sort of boxed and vented fiasco.

I built a water cooled silent gaming tower once. I used a 10in fan pulling air through a huge condenser coil. A beautiful t[H]ing.

They are all over amazon for about 14bucks each By the looks, they are all coming from the same factory. The going rate for a 110v box fan these days is 17+ for generic and 25+ for a Leskco. So the rad fans are a bit cheaper and have some style points which may make up for some future ghettorigged atrocities.

The rest of the parts arrived and working off all the tips I got, I cobbled this thing together. I expected a lot of problems, but amazingly 6 cards worked right off the bat. I pugged in the other 6 and thats when it got interesting. I had totally ignored my set up plan at this point and that was the problem. I wiped the Nvidia drivers and let it do a new install for all HW. The protip is that it seems to need to install and configure drivers for all the cards individually. I was told this explicitly by a [H]member but totally forgot in my excitement.


Not done yet, I probably wont ziptie everything down until more testing

I based the whole thing on Archaea's rigs, just the simplicity of a sausage smoking rack.


Note the hugh 35amp linear DC supply powering the two top fans. Analog baby! This was a ghettorigged set up, just to let it run overnight. I set the gpu fans at 100% and the top fans at 5V for the nigtht.

For some reason it rebooted at about 4am on the dot this morning. I think this was a stray pending update, but Im not sure. Have to check that out. I also had forgotten to turn off auto updates.

Heat: What surprised me is how hot these cards run on stock settings. 1060 miners all know this but It would run at 80c and if I added extra cooling, it would throttle down its own fan. I have to roll in the undervolting asap.
 
I dont know if any one is curious, but I will update for other noobs.

So, I have had the rig running and all seems to be ok. I still need to arrange cables but I am waiting for more splitters. Mostly an aesthetic concern anyway.

Fans:
The puller fans on top of the rack dont perform as great as I hoped. They have plenty of cfm at 5v, but they would work much better on a sealed or semi sealed box. They would also be more effective if the 1060s had a flow through design. Probably obvious but, the fan/HS combo on these appear to be designed to just dispel heat in all directions as opposed to primarily out the back. I may shroud the top just to see what happens, but it would appear as if side mounted blower fans would be more effective.


If the 20xx cards come with blow through server cooling, I will be all over it. If air flow is in one direction it makes everything easier. Tesla GPU cooling solution: ;)

So I am prepping to move the rig off of the bench to its new home. I have a few of these pulizzi 841 PDUs (pic related). They are good for 24A 125V. I was thinking about going 220V but since I already have the PDUs, I am installing two 30amp 110v circuits. This will save me some cost in the sort term anyway. The outlets will be just outside the breaker box, so I can swap them over to 220 if there is ever a compelling reason.

Moved the rack to the back room of basement where it will live. Got the PDU in the mix, fed with the new 30A 110 circuit. Still need to get a cheap switching power supply for the fans. I run them at 5v but still think I want the capability to crank them to 12.

I experimented a little and rotated half the cards and checked temps. No real change, maybe a degree. I may put a little shroud on it to try to improve the efficiency of the rad fans.

The rig has only been up a few days at a time. So hard to gauge stability, but so far so good. Also have had good luck with the UBit risers.

I was going to dress all the cables, but I have finally sucumbed to function over form. It works, no need for style points. One regret: I should have just gotten a 6 foot rack. It would get it off the floor and give some room to hang monitors/pdus and other conveniences.

We're in the same boat. I updated my shipping address on one zotac 1070ti order and the estimated date went from Mar 2 to Mar 12-29. I'm impressed they didn't cancel these.

I've got 8, 1070 running currently at 65% power target and I'm almost entirely hands off - it just works. I've been waiting a long time, at this point, for NVidia's next gen to pick up more cards.
What power target did you settle on with the 1060? Are they pretty hands off at this point? I like your top fan idea --- It might be best to have the fan air working with convection - blowing up (if they aren't?) If the big fans are blowing down now, could you mount the fans on the bottom of the empty second rack and blow them up?

That's what I did in my rack, blow up from the bottom. It makes sense given heat rises. As long as there is a gap for air on the base.
 
Top fans are pulling air up chimney style. They were running on the external analog power supply for full voltage variability testing. Now they are tapped into one of the un-used 5volt rails on a PSU. I forget what they draw, but its less than you would think. Im a big fan of big fans a low speed.

Basically hands off, I have had more downtime due to loss of internet than anything else.

I started these on Nicehash and now they are on SMOS mining Eth to CB right now. Ill have to check what their powertarget is but I would guess around 70%. I do run the card fans pretty fast if not 100%. I dont think they need to be 100%, just cautious. Also the top fans can fail and it will run hot, but still within good safety margins.

SMOS is just an OS with a bunch of different miners. It's all I use, it does cost $2.00 a month per rig. It's easy to use once you figure it out. I like it because I can check the status of my rigs and OC , change any settings from from my phone while I'm at work.

pclausen tried but am not really sure. I think he uses hiveos.
 
I like smos, it seems to be more stable as far as staying connected than HiveOS. The OC controls on it are good enough

They are very similar, but I believe there is(was) maybe a 5-10% advantage with SMOS. SMOS is a lot easier than I thought to set up, and even OC.

I am mining on dwarfpool through smos and the infopage/webgui sort of blows.
