Researchers from the USC Center for AI in Society have developed an AI system that can instantly identify and help catch animal poachers. The improved system monitors infrared cameras and can tell the difference between animals and humans in about a third of a second. They call this system "Spot" and it's going to be put into wide spread service across all of Botswana. Once again a very nice use for AI and something all of us should be in favor of. Excellent work, USC!

A team of computer scientists, led by Elizabeth Bondi, a USC Viterbi School of Engineering PhD student in Professor Milind Tambe’s lab, labelled 180,000 humans and animals in infrared videos using a labelling tool they developed to expedite the process.

The researchers used these labelled images and leveraged an existing deep-learning algorithm known as Faster RCNN, which they modified to teach a computer to automatically distinguish infrared images of humans from infrared images of animals.

I am not advocating the extermination of poachers because if successful, such an act might end up doing more harm than good.

What do you mean by extermination? I assume we're way beyond capital punishment. But how would getting rid of them (regardless of the means) do more harm than good?

Because see what Krenum said. I don't want to become a psycho

Hey man, its one thing to kill for population hunts to feed the local villagers, its another to do it for fun & leave the carcass rotting in the sun. Who's really the psycho here?

Wait until they improve their armored vehicles.. they may only be vulnerable if they escape the rear hatch.

Side note - there was the SK automated turrets. Maybe improved tech?

Doesn't have to be one or the other...

I agree but I don't think it would be possible to determine who's a dangerous idiot that needs to be put down because they believe hunting animals to extinction is justified. Impossible task.

If we can consider cats and wolves poachers I'm all for bringing it up here to WA.

Yes the kill drones wipe out poaches and animal poaching becomes a thing of the past... then some PETA wackos hack the system and toss in things like cattle, pigs and chicken as animals that might be poached then oh boy... Skynet mixed with Animal Farm

Na, that's just nature doing its thing. Humans are the problem.

Yeah I can agree with that, one could argue though me killing elk is natural though no? I mean, I use a bow, and it’s to feed my family! The moronic hipsters are the problem here in the nw, selling their houses in SF (which they ruined and left) for 3 mil buying 20 acres / retiring here and then bringing their stupid agendas. Like they will ever even see a cougar or wolf!! But noooo, bring em back in and throttle down what little hunting is left. A cat spreads 20 sq miles and needs a deer or elk a week, with 6000 of them now, thats a ton of animals taken down.
