I bought a couple GTX 1080 Ti's EVGA FTW3's for $750 each. They have not shipped yet but maybe next week.

Now I feel kind of stupid about it.

The original plan was to put waterblocks on them and mine, and possibly use them for SLI as a backup plan or future plan for them.

But now I'm reading how SLI is dead and I honestly saw them and impulse purchased them and didn't research how SLI would work (always wanted to try it but always just ended up selling my video card for a faster one). Sounds like SLI is dead and requires an i9 to fully utilize it.

Did I mess up in getting 2?

I'm sure there's an actual dilemma here somewhere.
Well my server blew up the next day, and now I need to build a new rig at additional cost. Thinking it was a bad move to buy the 1080s. I'm not sure they will actually be useful for mining (not enough cards?)

ill tell you what, sell them to me for 600 each. that way you dont have to deal with them anymore, and by loosing money on the deal, you can consider yourself repaying for your sins so you wont have to feel any guilt.

really though, if you want to part with them, PM me.

Thinking about mining garlic, but if that fails, then what? Seems like most cryptos I'd make around $5 worth of coin a day per card?

Nicehash says that I could be making about $60 a month per card with my power cost estimated at 38c kWh.
Summer electric rates are higher and would likely be 47c kWh leaving only $44 a month.

So it would take almost a year and a half to pay off the cards once they are waterblocked. But actually longer if I'm hit with capital gains (or would it be considered a loss the first year since the cards cost more than you can make?

With one card I would feel ok, because you can actually use one card later, but with SLI not working great it might not make sense to use them both.

Or am I looking at this all wrong? They should just mine forever and are investments?

Also waiting on an electric car that could push electric rates to 53c a kWh durring peak hours. Which would further impeed any profits. But it depends if I end up in power tier 2 or 3 with the car. Right now I think mining will put me in tier 2 and push me out of cheap 23c kWh power of tier 1. Tier 2 is 40c kWh and 3 is 47c so I averaged them to 38c?

Power rate is killing me here. I need to find a way to get some cheap power.

Yeah, I think I'm going to have to jump up on the vulture train here too. if you want to get rid of them and everyone falls through, I'll buy them off of you.

Dang, at that power rate, you need to get yourself some solar panels first.

Looks like a bad test...

If 970 SLi works, and I just upgraded from that, I expect 1080Ti SLI to work better :)

Considering how cards are going these days, I'd say it was a great deal. You could sell one and get a nice profit.

I should sell one and buy a threadripper 1950x and mine on that instead :) It gives a higher hash than 1080ti?

Oh yea, I don't have my cards yet and now the market crashed. I knew investing into mining was a sure way to make it no longer profitable! You can all blame me for the crash!

no it doesn't.

A threadripper won't make as much as a 1080TI and will use more power doing it.

add me to the list... if you don't want them, i'll take them for $750 and whatever more it costs to ship them both to me. ;)

better yet, if you don't want them, post them up for sale for $800 and they'll go in less than 30 minutes!

At your power rates you're going to have a tough time making enough profit with mining. If you are having unexpected financial problems with the server, I would suggest selling one of the cards here to one of these fine fellows. The reality is these cards are hard to find in stock now, so you have something that you could realistically sell for what you paid + shipping.

I got a 1080 ti for myself back in December for $840. It is the hydro copper edition, so I thought I saved a few bucks by getting the water block pre installed. I do some mining on it, but my electric rate is $0.17. You should still keep one for yourself for gaming, not likely anything is going to come along anytime soon that will stomp it - or be available.

On Monero (cryptonite algorithm) yes- threadripper beats 1080ti

But there are a lot of different algorithms and that’s threadrippers best option of a VERY limited set of crypto algorithms it (CPUs) can do.

1080ti is the best GPU for crypto mining (aside from Titan Xp and Titan V). GPUs can do nearly all the crypto currency algorithms. GPUs at their best make 2-3x Threadripper as far as profits and I have my 1080ti running at 70% power which is about 185 watts and overclocked so it still has stock speed hash rates or better. So yes. Less power and more profitability on a 1080TI.

Profits are WAYYYY down on 1080TI right now. Not sure if it’s the bubble bursting or a tough correction. Three weeks ago my 1080TI were each making $12 a day as a high water mark. Today $4.

PS. Those FTW cards will sell for $1200 to $1300 each new in box on eBay right now. So don’t be too regretful of your purchase. ;)

I don't have the cards yet, but they should get here next week. If I decide to sell them it will be on here and I'm not going to try to sell them for $1200. Hek by the time they get here the crypto market could be crashed so bad that no one will want them! Well of course gamers will want them. :) Even better!

I'm guessing my current z87 board would be CPU bound with only a 4770k in it.

I tried SLI with two 1080tis a couple of months ago and here's my experience. I played a couple of games of Overwatch at epic settings 300 fps, that was glorious. However, I could not get them to mine while connected together via SLI (I think I was using DTSM's miner at the time).

I did a quick google search and saw others having the same issue so I didn't bother looking into it further. I wasn't about to reconnect/disconnect whenever I wanted to switch between gaming and mining.

You can toggle SLI on and off in the control panel. You don’t need to physically remove the SLI bridge.

SLI and how well it works varies by driver and by architecture. Maxwell seemed to work better in SLI than Pascal does.

SLI has never worked anywhere near what you'd expect. a single 1080ti can't quite do enough in many 4k games. I'm hoping we'll be there with the next gen though.

Yes it has. There are periods in history where the scaling was quite good in many games.

That's unfortunate, but within the context of engines having to build in support in DX12 and Vulkan, it makes sense that they didn't focus too much on it.

I do hope that Nvidia (and AMD with Crossfire!) renew focus next gen. VR is gonna need it :D.

Right now Buying a second videocard for SLI is completely on a case by case basis for each game more than ever before. If you plan on playing a game that utilizes SLI then you will have a great experience. Otherwise, the adventures of trying to find work arounds, tweaking settings, and other ways to force some (limited) compatibility isn't for everyone. Now that so few games outright support SLI, or duel cards in general, both vendors have taken huge steps back from supporting it in any way shape or form. However, from a mining standpoint, despite the recent nosedive of digital currencies, there will still be a substantial market for your to work your cards if you want to try to monetize them in the next 6 months or so. I know that currencies are really taking a hit so I'd ask some of the veterans if there is any safer way to mine currently. It's just no fun to lose 30% of the value of all your currencies in a week, and that's if they don't continue to pummet. If you're more interested in gaming I would try to sell one of the cards at or above what you paid for it and just wait for VOLTA in a month to upgrade to a more powerful 4k solution.

Seller said it was a paypal glitch (something strange did happen when I purchased) they sent me a new invoice :) Should have them by next week. I bought 2 because I figured I could mine and then eventually game with them.

However mining is no longer profitable, I might do some anyways though. I'm very very frustrated by SLI gaming options on current motherboards x299 is a mess with selecting a CPU, and z370 does not do SLI and NVME too well. AMD is behind for gaming and efficiency but I might wait and see what happens with that.

I managed to kinda fix my server (needs more sata ports to get it back online) but it looks like this micro atx board will work (moved the CPU from x48 into a G45M chipset foxcon board).

Maybe I can try SLI on my Z87 chipset 4770k? or I might just sell a card to someone on the forum for a reasonable price.

Gotta get a waterblock for the card too so it can really replace my watercooled 290x..

For X299: if you actually want to do 16x/16x and have stuff left over for NVMe, you have to get a 40-lane CPU. Just means you can't cheap out and get something that'd be slower than an 8700k.

For Z370, main thing I've read is to use only one M.2 slot. Which should be fairly okay. I may do this in the future depending on pricing.

ah yes the classic it worked almost like you'd expect in some games. Overall its not great.
