astronomical GPU prices?

I am so glad I bought a 1080Ti (for gaming) in December, when the prices werent as insane. I paid $779 for the MSI Gaming version, and its fantastic.

I am looking at the prices now, and they are insane. I would hate to be shopping for a GPU at this time...

I'm curious as to what people are mining that's making them $8-10 a day?

Nist 5 a few days ago, Blake 2s, a few days before that. The hot coins come and go - right now nothing mainstream is that high. But crypto currency has been down a bit the last few days.

1080TI can only make about $5.50 to $6 at this moment.

A 1050TI about 1.50-175. at this moment

If mining profits don't bounce back in the span of a week you'll see the sky high asking prices on eBay and at vendors ease back a bit - but definitely not drop hard. $6 a day is still VERY profitable on a 1080TI. When it only costs like 30-50 cents for electricity.

I am about to buy a prebuilt system and say f it. I am assuming the prebuilt companies have long term buy orders and then have cards on hand because they won't sell without a complete system.

I feel dirty just considering it.

nvidia is probably more concerned when the monopoly money fad crashes the market will be flooded with 1080ti second hand cards and cut into sales of the new cards if and when they come

Something i've done prob 20 years ago for a new cpu at the time. Bought a Compaq pc at circuit city only cause I had room on a credit card and my cpu died from overclocking! Haha

got sli 980's still good for a few more years.

they survived 3 platform upgrades and keep 4k smooth.

haha nope.

nope nope nope.

runs 4k great.

Haha I've had a pair of 980s in SLI for the last few years just sold therm a few week ago.

1080 res great.. moved to a 1440 145hz screen.. nope!! Bought a 1080 quick.. 2 days later bought another 1080 for all cause I wanted over 100fps in bf4.

Titan fall was a huge no no as well. Not enough memory on those 980s.

I guess either your really turning down the settings to conserve memory or the games your playing are old.

If anyone is interested in a normal (non-TI) 1080, try visiting your local Best Buy. Went in looking for a headset on Friday and saw several just sitting there. Normal retail price. Apparently that isn't unusual.

4k 60hz is just fine thanks for your concern though.

I would not be surprised if Nvidia starts to do what some of their partners have already started to do. That being that your warranty is automatically voided if you use any of their next generation GPU's for mining. Not sure how they would go about doing that but it does seem that is where things are going to end up.

They encourage people using their GPUs for deep learning / AI programming, which is similar workload-wise to mining. I don't see how it's realistic for anyone to detect or void warranties based on this.

That said - Microcenter's approach to increasing the GTX 1080 Ti to $1500 and then giving you a $700 discount if you're buying with a CPU / motherboard makes sense - they're making it ridiculously expensive for miners while still giving gamers and system upgraders a normal-priced alternative.

AMD tried similar tactics for the VEGA launch and people bellyached until they stopped it. I expect the same to happen again with Microcenter.

Where did you read a quote stating $-700 If also bought parts for a new system build?

When buying in bulk wholesale lots, some of the card manufacturers are requiring an equal number of their motherboards be bought at the same time (realistically just trying to find a way to move outdated inventory that nobody wants).

It's not a quote per-se, but if you look on their site, they mention a discount for PC builders on any of the graphics cards listed.

I've been to my local Microcenter a few times over the last several months and my impression from talking to the employees is they're sick of miners. It hurts their business when nobody is building gaming machines right now because all the video cards are taken by miners or resold by scalpers. It's bad enough that DDR4 is so insanely expensive.

It's Nvidia, it would be wise to never doubt what they are willing & capable of doing lol. Jensen Huang is very much the type of guy that would not see mining in the same light as Deep Learning/AI Programming.

Is there some reason miners have hard-ons for the 1080ti when its $1100USD? Why don't they just buy up the in stock Titan XP for $1200USD? I looked at a review of the XP on some site and it does nearly 35% better on Ethereum mining?

Somehow I doubt they are going to do a whole lot to stop people from buying 747 jets full of video cards.

The neat thing about mining is the more people who do it, the less profitable it becomes per person, so the problem will eventually work itself out. A lot of miners are going to lose a lot of money first.

Disclosure: I mine on my video cards, but I use them for gaming and work primarily, so I might be biased.

I don't understand the math there - on a good day you can mine about $10 worth of currency on a GTX 1080 Ti. On a normal day it's $5 - $6.

So assuming you're paying near MSRP, the card pays for itself in less than 6 months. I'm pretty sure these higher prices are targeting people who want to use the video cards for gaming because it just isn't cost effective to pay 50% + MSRP for mining.

It is probably gamers not paying attention. I know I was considering it because my 1060 will age, and a TXP could pay for itself and be a free upgrade but when it came too it, ROI was too far out and the math/ practicality wasn't there for a 1080p gamer

I've seen people dog it because its a blower/ reference card but ALL TXP are blower because they only come from Nvidia and they only make blowers

Yes, finding the cards on shelves will still very much be an issue but the fact that a dead card due to mining will be a complete loss might discourage a few people. Retailers are going to sell through their stock regardless of what Nvidia request them to do so they will have no real control over that without having to take some extreme measures. I do however expect to see more partners slap this kind of sticker on boxes starting with the next generation.

Undoubtedly we will see more of that on gaming cards once mining-optimized models become more widely available. Very likely the reason we see shortages now as card manufacturers have switched a portion of production to those, many of which do not even have display ports.

toothless warranty void clause.

They don't have a way to tell what the card was used for. period.
To me that says they just use insufficient cooling, I would avoid that manufacturer (Zotac uses really bad custom coolers as well). In principle a video card or CPU should be able to run at 100% all the time and not degrade, and whether you're gaming, deep learning or mining is irrelevant. Anything less is bad engineering.

Maybe not at the moment but anything is possible in the future. Especially when it comes to computer hardware & the software that is linked to it... :sneaky:

You think this huge increase in resale prices is being driven by gamers buying cards at 50% over MSRP? I think its uneducated new miners scrambling to get their chunk of the (ever decreasing these days) BTC pie. What I don't get is the fact the 1080ti's are selling on Ebay for $1000USD+, why aren't the XP's at $1200USD in stock on Nvidia's website just as attractive?

Because NONE of the newbie build guides use Titan Xp cards in the recipes. The newbies don’t even know what those cards are. You got new people building mining rigs who have never built a pc before and aren’t into gaming and don’t know hardware.

LOL, that's funny to think of. I keep seeing these auctions ending at $1000+ for a used 1080 and shaking my head when Nvidia's own site still have the big guys in stock. I should buy them up and release a youtube guide to mining with them.

From what I gathered the TXP doesn't have much of a mining performance advantage over a 1080 Ti but at much worse performance per watt ratio, and downclocking or undervolting won't do enough to ever make it operate equivalently. Plus blowers just.... blow.

My Titan Xp's are averaging about 1750 to 1800 Mhz core clock and are matching my 1080 Ti that is at 1900-2000Mhz core clock with the same power usage while mining. The Titan Xp's are thermal throttling and are quite loud (75 - 80% fan speed to match the MSI Gaming X 1080 Ti, and even then are at 75C). This is on the stock blower cooler. I have waterblocks arriving on Tuesday, very interested to find out what putting the Titan Xp under water will do to its mining performance. I have a feeling that GPU Boost 3.0 is going to love these cards running at below 50C and will provide a substantial boost to core clock speeds.

the world is upside, here I though when I originally got my Titan Pascal with a water block, that I was splurging, that it would turn out be one of the best deals ever. I don't think that bodes well for pc gaming in the least.

I don't know how people run Titan XP in SLI. Seems like with them in an enclosed case and clocked up next to each other they would be throttling constantly and the fans would be spun WAY up.

I have mine pegged 100% usage running open air, blower fans at 80%, and two ML140 fans pointing straight at them. They still run in the mid 60s.

These prices have been hell for most gamers, but I've actually benefited from it. Went from a 1070 to a 1080 to a 1080 ti hybrid for around $110 total over the past two months just by buying at MSRP and selling the previous cards on Ebay.

I just ordered an i3-8100, ssd,8gb, gtx 1070 system from Cyberpowerpc for $1000 shipped. Gonna be used as a backup and mine in its freetime. With what the cost of gpus now i consider that a steal. The gpu should make about $130-140 profit a month right now so it would pay for itself in 7 or 8 months.

Or, you you sell the GTX 1070 and have the rest of the system for ~$250, and it would more than pay for itself in mere minutes. ;)

Which system is that? I don’t see that price?

So far from who I've spoke to on the phone at our local mc it sounds like you need to buy up parts for a full new build to get a discount on a graphics card.

No idea what the discount is or any details of what one needs to buy for sure till we speak to a salesman i guess. Waiting for someone to call us back with more info.

And no I've since cooled off and have not called there corporate office... yet. Still may as its bull how no one bothered to mention anything to me while there.. pretty much feel like I was being judged as an obvious flipper or miner and didn't want to tell me right off the bat.
