GPU Prices Skyrocket, Breaking the Entire DIY PC Market

The upside is that we'll continue to get more console port style games because "why push the envelope when there's no customers there?" ... wait.. upside?

I can't imagine this is good for the PCMR v consoles argument. Those $450 Polaris builds seem like urban legends now.

I had plans to upgrade my rig this year, but this has been a complete turnoff.

Certain coins you can...and still at a profit btw. I have two CPU mining Superior Coin at $650 profit. Just need to research the coins that are still profitable.

i've got a 3470 2500k 1700x 1500x 2 x5670's a 4790k just sitting around where can i make money?

Hmm. I wonder if there is any market for older GPU's as a result.

I have an old GTX460 768MB version kicking around I could put on the market....

No. The 9 series is still OK, but anything before that is worthless AFAIK.

Any coin using the CyptoNight protocol is easily mined on CPU or AMDs. Even a HD7850 pulls in some decent numbers. Monero is one of those, BUT the difficulty is crazy high, so no profitability for older hardware.

Last year I tripped over Superior Coin. Been mining with my off hardware since June and have grabbed a substantial number of coin, which now is just starting to turn around the last two weeks. I always mined at a profit, but now its substantial. I'll be hodling on a 3-5 year plan.

Numbers....An i7-2700K @4.8ghz brings in 350H/s. An old HD7850 gives me 420H/s. i5-2500K @4ghz gives 120H/s. Between those three, I'm getting 890H/s. Calculator at http://superiorcoinpool.com/# shows 1200 SUP per day. Price yesterday hit 122 sats briefly. If we use that as a price (which I think will be low in a week or two), and the price of BTC right now, we get..... .00000122BTC per SUP x 1200SUP/day x $13000 for 1 BTC.... $19/day... Off three "idle" pieces of hardware. Its minable via webpage as well, but its much more efficient to use desktop mining apps.

I'm holding this stuff. I'm not in need of it now. Pay the taxes on the mining, then cash out with Capital Gains (or whatever the tax landscape looks like down the road). I'm hoping for around a $1 per coin, which is not out of the ordinary for these.

Now, Superior Coin is based off of Monero, so you have the privacy and transaction speed aspects, but its adding several extra privacy functions, as well as chat protocols this year. Private and secure chat communication interests me. Additionally, its already functioning as a "task coin" Click this article and I'll pay you some coin.

Its on three small exchanges right now with another larger one very soon.

With that said, I toss my two NVidia cards to Nicehash when I'm not gaming. Might as well make use of them. When power is $2/day, but combined those things give me $8-12/day, you can't ignore it.

It's at the point now that I could ebay my two almost two year old cards and get paid to buy a Titan Xp.

Could even put in the ad that they haven't been burned down running mining 24/7.

And here I've been wondering how I'd unload my 1080's SLI for anything useful.

Bought my MSI 1070ti on Dec.23 for $649 CAD from Canada Computers not a great price but semi affordable. Not quite a month later and they're selling the same card now for $799 CAD. I'd try and flip it for some extra cash but then I would need to go back to my 7970 which is getting a little long in the tooth.

I usually don't go for the latest and greatest when I've built my rigs, Skylake processors came out, stuck with Haswell, 10x0 processors were 4-6 months out, I got a 9x0 card (plus I kind of wanted my rig now, not half a year later).

Wonder what I could get for my 2nd 980 SC? I could run a single card for a while..

If and when this crypto crash happens or stabilizes the market is going to get flooded with dirt cheap carts.

Its good to see money going into Nvidia and even AMD due to all the demand. Hopefully it will fund R&D efforts for future hardware. AMD really needs it.

I mean at these prices there is no way I'm upgrading my 980s, so it may actually save me some money until something decent comes out.

My boss is getting heavy into mining now, we went for a 2 hour "research" trip during work hours yesterday because he found out staples got a bunch of gtx 1070s in at non crazy prices. He ended up getting 6 for $580CAD each. Also got a bunch of 1080 and 1080ti for nearly msrp prices lol. Good prices still exist but they disappear very very fast lol.

It's a shame that all the mining morons are ruining the PC market, especially since it's for some second or third rate sham currencies like Lite Coin, Ethereum or Doge Coin...

Guess I'll continue using my Pascal Titan X for yet some time to come.

i will remember that the next time i see my bank statment with deposits of real world USD

I was at the Dallas Microcenter just this afternoon and the video card aisles are nearly totally bare. Literally all they have are garbage like ATI 5450s or Geforce 710s.

This make come as a shock to you, but not everyone is a hard core gamer or needs a high end graphics card

I can understand your logic as it supports your POV/Agenda but that is far from the reality of it all. What really may come as a surprise to you is that the PC market is not supported by hardcore anyone. It's growth is built on mid-range components. I would suggest you go and look at Steams numbers. You will see all these numbers for yourself. Using your logic then I should be able to go buy a GTX 1060 no problem. Wrong, they were the first cards to go. Everyone in the game is getting hurt. Budget builders, mid range guys and the much smaller demographic hardcore gamer / builder.

Hoping the will cripple miners ability to mine asap until they have a chance to properly address miners while they get PC gamers back on track.

Yeah, the only solution is to make more cards to feed the market demand. Obviously that is risky if crypto tanks. I thin kmost cards are going to OEMs on long term contracts. My local Costco sells Dells with AMD 1700s and 4GB 570's for $800. Not a bad deal. I thought about pick up a few to mine with.

I'm glad I bought my aorus 1080ti from Massdrop a few months back for a little under $700. These prices are absolutely insane.

Makes me feel better about paying full price for my Aorus 1080ti at launch. Looks like I got a good discount.

I got my 1080 right before this craze started, so it was $350/shipped on sale with GR Wildlands. I'm feeling pretty decent about that purchase, ha. Had I held off to sell my 290, I could have probably made money on the upgrade.

I happened to time it just right, and swapped 2x 290 + 2x 390X -> 4x 1080 for nearly free :)

I paid $850 for my evga 1080 ti sc2 hydro copper right before xmas, it seems to be a bit more expensive now but not by much. I figured the water cooler cards wouldn't be hit so bad, since I avoided buying a gpu block I basically paid $725 for my 1080 ti. I game on it, I work on it, but due to the profitability I also mine on it when I'm not otherwise using the pc.

It is crazy high ram prices that kept me from building. Bought a refurb hp 8300 i5 8Gb instead and used my old 6450 for duel monitor and my ssd with 8.1. Total cost less than 8Gb ram for a new build and runs what I need much better than my old computer.

I had to overpay for my 1080 due to the ftard miners so I'll always enjoy whenever there are news of their misfortune. I'll never ever be on their side. I hope all the cryptocurrency take a nosedive and take with it many people who will lose everything because of it.

This will keep VR from really taking off. I was thinking about getting into the VR game with the next generation, which will require some serious GPU horsepower, but there is no way I'm paying current prices to make the necessary upgrades.

Seems to me like all the profit goes to the retailers. Bulk pricing from the manufacturers is probably mostly the same.

You're thinking small fries

i hope all these coins crash hard.
that will be very entertaining.
I wanna see a bitconnect-level crash.

I work with a guy who has lost 30k on Bitconnect during this.....he is a real asshole so it's easy to find the humour in it for me.

I bought my 6GB GTX 1060 a year ago for $225. Didn't realize how out of control the prices are for a mid level card, as they are now going for 2-3x the price.
If I was building my system today, I'd probably stick with my old video card or buy something lower end. as I don't do that much gaming.
At these prices I'm tempted to sell my GTX 1060 and switch back to my old ATI card. I can always upgrade when the prices eventually crash.

Even with all that, I'll stick with what I said. Most system are not sold to gamers, they are sold to business.
I buy a lot of systems for work, and almost all of them are ordered with just the built in Intel video.
On rare occasions I order something with a non-intel video, but it's usually because that's how the system comes preconfigured, not because we need it.

Have you guys been checking your local Micro Center? Mine gets their stock in on Wednesday and is NOT raising their msrp prices on cards.

Yes, they sell out in a day or two, but they aren't jacking their price up.
