31.5" 2560x1440 165 Hz VA G-Sync - LG 32GK850G

I went from the C32HG70 to this monitor recently due to the fact that I really wanted a 32 inch gsync monitor. First of all going from a curved monitor back to a flat one is weird. It takes your eyes a little time to get used to the switch back. Even though both monitor screens are the same size not having the curve makes the monitor feel a little larger. I know a lot of people don't really like the C32HG70 but I was very happy with it. I do not have the ability to calibrate the LG monitor so off the bat the colors don't look as good as the Samsung. This monitor has better uniformity than the C32. Samsung did not do a good job of reproducing grey images on screen almost like you can see a screen behind it, this LG does not have that problem. I have been running overclocked at 165hz all day and it's been great. Just having gsync over the C32 makes it worthwhile but this monitor is just phenomenal. The contrast is legit. I would say the only knock on this monitor is the sides are not as bright as the center if you are too close to it but it's not too bad. I'll be keeping this one a long time.
Would you say the black viewing angles are better on the LG? Less "glow" on black? Do you also have perfect no BLB unit?
 
Still nothing for Canada :cry:... even if I could arrange to get one from the states, if it has any defects I'm screwed. Guess I gotta wait some more :banghead:

Talked to Canadian LG CR and he didn't know when and if the monitor will be released in Canada

I'm finally playing Outlast the way it should be experienced, and having a blast. I'm going to go back and replay Doom as well, and just picked up Metro Last Light Redux. This thing is SO much nicer for these dark atmospheric games over the IPS it's like a different experience altogether. Really would be close to perfect if not for those pesky black to grey transitions, but I think I'll get over it. Everything else is just top notch ,even the bright colors look great with some added saturation.

I'm supposed to get mine on Wednesday but probably won't set it up until the weekend. Coming from a 27" Dell IPS made in 2008, I expect to see some improvement in PQ. Newegg was doing a promotion where they threw in a Logitech G910 keyboard to go with the monitor.

Oh come on, too much hype and its still 3 months away at least :D I have myself Metro and Black Mesa Source sitting and waiting since 2012 for a decent VA screen like this, to properly be able to enjoy them.

It's safe to say this is the best monitor I've ever owned. I missed the VA contrast. I've been on 27" for 5 years, so going up to 32" feels good too.

I'm looking forward to trying 1:1 pixel mapped 1080p console games on the monitor too. The resulting image was too small on my 27" to make that useable.

What are you guys using for brightness, contrast, gamma mode(1-3), and game profile (Gamer{1,2},FPS{1,2}, etc. Color settings in the OSD as well?

I tried to match this monitor to my ips acer 321hk but that monitor is not calibrated so just going with what I am used to already. I then tried to fine tune the settings using the lagom website. Part of me wants to buy a calibration tool but no idea on what a good one is around <$150.

Invest in a colorimeter so you can take measurements for color temperature, gamma, brightness, etc. I'm pretty sure if its dialed in correctly this monitor should almost match your IPS minus the viewing angles of course.

how is the smearing ? and is the low PPI bothering you in real world use?
 
The three colorimeters I'd start looking at are the Datacolor Spyder 5 Pro ( $190 including software ), SpectraCal C3 ( $150 for meter + $200 for CalMAN ), and X-Rite i1 ( $250 to $4000 depending on meter and software bundle but the lowest option is around $500. ) X-Rite is what the professional calibrators use and most of them rely on SpectraCal CalMAN software for precise calibration. Spyder 5 Pro is the simplest to use for novices with step-by-step on-screen instructions for a basic calibration, which is certainly good enough for anyone just wanting to get a correct picture. I have an X-Rite i1 Pro and use CalMAN and it can take a good hour ( sometimes up to three hours for multiple calibration tweaks ) to do a proper calibration. 5 minutes with a Spyder 5 and you're 95% there.
 
Just remember that any changes to room lighting.. ambient lighting and bias lighting.. will completely change the way your eyes perceive the singular set point you calibrated to, especially in regard to contrast, brightness, and color vibrancy.

Yep. When I post my calibration settings I usually state whether day or night and the type and luminosity of any lighting under which the calibration was done. Easier to do calibrations at night with blinds/curtains closed and under artificial light.

Wouldn't call it low PPI (that would be 1080p on a 27 incher). It's standard PPI just as a 1080p 24 inch monitor. After seeing 4k (on 32 or 27) it will look ugly. But if you come from a 24 inch 1080p monitor it will be the same as before, just much more real estate.

PPI was a bit shocking at first, but I moved the monitor back further and it doesn't bother me anymore. I can only see smearing on dark transitions, if I actively try to make it happen and actively look for it, but it's pretty minor.

I went from a 1440p on a 27inch which definitely had superior PPI but 1440p on the 31.5 inch screen is good enough for me, especially considering the extra size of the monitor itself. Truth be told on the 27 inch at 1440p at 100% scaling I sometimes found it too small to work with day to day.

What would be the cheapest hardware to calibrate my projector, Tvs (plasma, LED) and montiors (ISP and VA) and laptops (TN panels)?

Do I have to buy Spyder 5 Elite to be able to calibrate all of them?
 
Finally got around to unboxing and cleaning everything up. I snapped a quick photo of my setup. The monitor definitely needs some calibration but it will probably be a week or two before I get around to it since I also want to calibrate my TV and run Audyssey on my HT setup.

Nice looking setup. I've been very happy with the monitor. In another forum someone mentioned the LG drivers on their site also has a ICC profile.

Considering I use 120% scaling on 27" 1440p at work which "feels" most comfortable to me I doubt PPI would be an issue to me, I'll think I'll hold off for an IPS version whenever that comes as I'm a little worried about smearing as I'm used to my 240Hz TN panel now, hopefully it comes sooner than later.

I don't think that would be worth it at all for the -70% contrast loss, addition of IPS glow and possibly BLB as well. A modern fast VA is directly comparable to an IPS - both are a leap behind ULMB image.

A proper review will confirm if it's better than the CHG70 in the problematic transitions, like the user experiences point out. But as I have first hand experience with the C27HG70 and know how it is practically equal to an XB271HU in action, it wouldn't put me off one bit if there is one black-to-grey transition in the same 30ms ballpark.
 
Just a reminder since people are talking about smearing:

.. Well worth shaving the top end off to 120 fps-hz ~ 130 fps-hz in order to gain 3x the contrast and 3x the black level compared to ips and tn in my opinion.


If you aren't keeping 100fps average or more you really aren't getting much out of the higher hz because you aren't filling it with new frames of virtual object action and viewport movement fluidity, and not keeping high enough to reduce blur considerably. I mention this because 4k would be more demanding and require settings to be dialed down more than 1440 to achieve 100fps-hz+ (average).

For the most part, your frame rate typically fluctuates +/- 30fps or more from the average reported by frame rate averaging tools.

I try to stay in the 100fps+ average zone like the top graph so it's 70/80 - 100 - 135/140 band. 120fps-hz average would be better for a 90 - 120 - 150 (or 140 capped on my 144hz monitor) but I tend to keep graphics settings a little higher than that.

More modern VA gaming panel reviews in the last year have settled on 120fps-hz or so being the max before the VA would start to lose clarity again (blur/ghost/smear) due to the response time. I'm curious what this monitor's top end is vs the response time. If you start to see issues at higher fps ranges, you might want to to consider capping the frame rate at 120 or 130 (or dialing up graphics settings until your fps graph stays below that range) - and see what it looks like. I'd guess that the sweet spot on a modern gaming VA is probably staying 100fps to 120 fps most likely, maybe to 130. Then it would be a narrow bell shaped curve with 120 being the tightest in can be but that average fluctuating +/-. You can cap the top end as described but the only way to "cap" the bottom end is to keep your lower range of the frame rate graph high enough by dialing down graphics settings. Again 4k would be even more demanding so keep that in consideration.

FASTER exacerbates smear in certain transitions, while FAST almost eliminates them. At this setting I really have to look for those transitions to even notice them.

With the caveat that I don't have experience using other VA panels, I don't think smearing is an issue at all with this monitor. I don't notice anything worse about motion fluidity than with the Predator IPS.

Oh, it's a keeper for sure. You'll probably see my Acer up for sale on here soon, I don't need ULMB so I just won't have a purpose for it anymore.
 
Oh man just plugged mine in and literally as soon as the windows splash screen appeared I was staring right at a dead pixel right in the middle of the screen lol. Then I find another dead pixel and stuck red pixel on the right side. Come on AUO/LG! :rolleyes:
Then I'm like: let me crank up the brightness for my standard full pixel scan. Then I check the OSD and it was full brightness! Pretty dim display, can't be more than around 280 cd/m2....

How's the BLB and uniformity? Dead pixel lottery alone is rather easily winnable, so I wouldn't be worried about that.
 
My synopsis of the 32GK850G:

1. Build quality - 1/2. Middle of the field. Not Eizo build quality but it does the job. Quality control though needs improvement, two dead and one stuck red pixels on my sample. The lottery continues.

2. Stand - 1/1. Seems to do everything you typically need a stand to do and isn't terribly wobbly. Although, I do recommend a monitor arm for the VESA mount. Due to the PPI/size of the display, I like to push it back slightly when using the desktop and pull it slightly closer for gaming.

3. Anti-Reflection characteristics - 2/3. Not a full semi-gloss which is my favorite, but a nice very light matte. No distracting sparkle.

4. OSD - 1/2. Very interesting take with the controls and menu system. I'm not a huge fan of reaching under the center of the monitor to a 4-way hat switch with detent, but I can see why they went this way. I would have preferred the main menu switch to be on the backside of the right bezel like ASUS. Much easier to reach, as twisting your arm to reach up under the center of the monitor isn't the most comfortable action. Especially for those of us that make adjustments all the time (more on that later). Allows you to save different profiles, but some items (such as on-screen cross-hair) do not stick with profiles. Second button (left/right roller) to the right of the 4-way hat switch controls the bias lighting on the back of the monitor. Press in to turn the bias lighting on/off.

5. Bias lighting - 1/2. It does have a "natural" light tone, but it doesn't get very bright. For those of us that enjoy bias lighting, you would still probably have to go with a regular bias lighting kit due to the lack of brightness on the LG. The LG bias lighting is a lighted large circle on the back and thankfully has no LEDs pointing down from under the monitor.

6. Aim-point - 2/2. Great on-screen aim-point implementation of a red or green solid dot or small cross-hairs. Many displays (hello ASUS) have absolutely massive and distracting on-screen aim-point controls. The only issue I have with LG's implementation is it does not save with image profiles. This means every-time you want to turn the aim-point on and off (jumping in and out of game to desktop), you have to do many key-presses to navigate the OSD.

7. Brightness-uniformity - 2/5. On my sample, the brightness and uniformity falls into the 280-300 cd/m2 range. The lower right and lower left corners being slightly dimmer. LG advertises a 350 cd/m2 brightness which I find is the minimum acceptable these days for those of us that like to use computer displays during the day in a bright room. 400 cd/m2 preferable. It falls short of advertised brightness. Its minimum brightness does allow for complete-darkness gaming.

8. Backlight-bleed - 3/3. Just some very minor bleed at the top left and bottom right edges. Almost not even worth mentioning.

9. Contrast ratio - 4/5. For an LCD panel, quite good ~3000:1. After using an OLED your jaw won't exactly drop, but it looks significantly better than its TN/IPS competitors. No ghastly IPS glow. Deviating from the stock contrast setting of 70 seems to quickly produce undesirable results. Black luminance appears to befit a 3000:1 contrast ratio panel. Both a noticeable step up from recent "2000:1" contrast ratio VA gaming panels.

10. Viewing angles/gamma/contrast shift - 2/3. About mid-way between TN and IPS. Not the horrid viewing angles of TN but there is some gamma/contrast shift (especially at the bottom right and left corners) when viewed at a normal sitting distance. The further you sit back, obviously the less shift occurs.

11. Colors/Gamma - 1/3. Overall I believe the worst characteristic of the panel. Gamma setting of 3 seems to be the only usable setting. Screen has a fair bit of "Washed out" look to it. You will not be getting OLED/IPSs level of color saturation with this display. Whites appear to be white, instead of off-tones that can be very annoying. This is not a monitor you buy for good colors or accuracy. This is a gaming display that you can use for normal desktop work. I use a NVIDIA control panel color saturation level of "60" to bring a bit of life to the image. I found the color profile "medium" the best, with cool and warm doing exactly that. Those with a color calibrator can adjust individual color channels (although only RGB).

12. Pixel inversion - 1/1. I see no noticeable pixel inversion in my tests.

13. Overclock/Gsync stability - 1/1. I've had zero issues with 2560x1440 @ 165 Hz signal/refresh rate stability.

14. Bezel - 1/1. Not too thick and is flush. Fairly attractive modern design. I am a big fan of thin/minimalist designs.

15. Sound - 0/0. If you can afford an $850 monitor, you aren't going to be using monitor speakers.

16. Input lag - 5/5. G-Sync, so as long as you turn on V-Sync and cap FPS to 162, you will have a butter smooth, lag-free and tear free experience.

17. Motion quality - 4/5. Simply amazing performance from a VA panel. MPRT tested at ~5.8 ms. Preferred overdrive setting of "fast". Whatever magic was done by AUOptronics/LG with regard to this VA panel manufacturing and/or its overdrive, it just set the standard for VA performance. True, some color transitions are still slower than others, but we are talking overall motion clarity on par with the fastest of gaming IPS panels and only slightly trailing the fastest TN panels.

18. Flat/curved - 0/1. I prefer curved monitors, especially the larger they get. Certainly not a deal breaker, just a preference to assist with contrast/gamma shift and immersion.

19. HDMI input - 1/1. Accepts HDCP 2.2 and does an "OK" job of up-scaling 1080p content from your game-console or Blu-ray player. It does have a 1:1 option if you prefer a native/smaller 1080p image.

20. Resolution/PPI - 2/4. At 93ppi, clarity aficionados aren't going to be drooling over this display. I personally push the display back as previously stated while working in windows/web browser. 4K is the ideal resolution for this screen size, but comes at a hefty 227% of the performance requirement of 1440p. Even with my overclocked Titan-V, playing games at max "sensible/ultra" settings, 165 Hz G-Sync 1440p still provides the best compromise between graphic clarity/resolution and motion clarity/smoothness (FPS).


Conclusion: No fancy quantum dots or HDR. No amazing colors. This is a back-to-basics, no frills, very-fast gaming monitor. That happens to be a 31.5" VA! The first of its kind. If high resolution isn't at the top of your list. If IPS glow spoils your fun. If gaming TN panels viewing angles and sparkle AR film rub you the wrong way. If contrast ratio is important to you in addition to great motion clarity. This is the best overall gaming display on the market. My replacement monitor is en-route to replace my unit with pixel issues, as this will now be my main display.

Ya Fuzzy, 1440P seems to be the sweet spot these days if you want high refresh. I guess that could change with Volta next year. 4K is awesome, but single GPU can't do 144 Hz 4K justice. And we all know SLI these days is losing support/popularity.

On another note:

It is quite strange for LG to use a VA panel since they are an IPS panel manufacturer. But they also went out of their way to put panel type "VA" on their spec sheet, but then list no contrast ratio.

All the specs are matching up with LG's.

The panel is not made by LG that's why. It's probably made by AUO. All the high refresh rate, VA, g-sync panels are made by AUO.

That's a bit of a shame. My XB271HU definitely falls a bit short of 2.2 gamma, giving this slight washed out feel (and reveals packaging artifacts quite easily) compared to the calibrated C27HG70 or U2312HM I had. So I guess it will not be worse, but I'll just see more contrast and no IPS glow.
