Which Motherboard for 8700k? Do I wait?

So my current Rig will do OK for me for a bit (~3 months). I am a photographer / Videographer.

Current setup
i5-4570
16gb ram
Asus Z87
850SSD (OS)
WD Black 4TB for data and editing (Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere Pro)

I AM buying a 960 EVO 1TB - NVME which will def help with editing (and I can transfer to a New Rig when I build it in 2-3 months)

My question.. Do I build NOW (I CAN) or wait for 2-3 months (I can wait also) I know you can't predict the future, but best guess.

Motherboards are the biggest issue for me as they are ALL over the place and SOO many models and options.

What I need in a new rig:

(1) m.2 PCIe NVME slot (scratch, Cache, Projects) for Editing (I will have the drive)
(1) PCIe x16 (I know they all come with it) since I will be running (1) GPU most likely a 1060
(4) DIMM slots (32gb ram)
(4) Sata ports (don't need Raid)
(4) USB ports (preferably 3.0, why is 2.0 even a thing anymore?)

Maybe Wants:
Wifi - 2x2 - I would LOVE to have wifi as my router is a good distance from where the computer is going to be.
(1) Thunderbolt 3 port
(1) usb-c port
(1) Dual Nics (I have a synology 1812+ and would love faster connection to it - would that help?)
(1) m.2 slot (future expansion of drives)

So do I wait? Any reason to build now? IF SO... What motherboard would be the cheapest best option for what i need (I KNOW not much in the need category).

p.s. I am ok with a MILD overclock if it's SUPER easy and doesn't require an expensive cooler.


Am I missing anything else you might want to know to help make a decision?

Talk about coincidence. I just made my decision and went Ausus Tuf Pro gaming since i had such success with my Sabertooth and its the closest thing. I serious considered the EVGA board but at the time it was not available so i pulled the trigger. I am building the rig today and tomorrow as time permits. I will let you know my thoughts once i get it all together. I had bad experiences with Asus wi-fi so i was not interested in those offerings.

I would love to hear your thoughts for sure. Did you NOT go with a WIFI board? Which EVGA board were you thinking about? I don't even know where to start... I don't want to look at every board on the planet. That might take a while.

That has nearly everything in your want list, except for the dual nics and thunderbolt. There's also a non-wifi version. I'd probably go with that, and just use a USB or PCI-E wifi card, which can be had for like $7.

MSI offers the "Godlike," which I think has everything you listed, but it costs $500.

That right, My rig is hardwire.
 
I'll be interested to see what he thinks as well. I personally think the TUF series is not up to par anymore and want to see if he agrees. There are a few boards that seem close but they are all 200+
 
Well I booted her just now. Clicked XMP on the ram and went into windows at just under 5GHz . Just under 1.4v on the cpu. 26 c with a Nactua U9s The board build quality is very good. It is not as heavy as my Sabertooth but its still good. I have to do some cable management, batton everything up and then tomorrow I will start put it through its paces. The EVGA looks real nice. I was pissed that they sent me an available notification after I ordered this but I am pleasantly surprised so far.

By the way, these 8700's are smooth as a babies arse.

Thanks for those links man. I really appreciate it. I guess I have a little more research to do. I DO NOT want to spend $500 on a MB.. I just won't use it. I DO NOT plan to overclock much and well I don't have a TON of needs.

What are you mainly doing with your rig? Gaming? Keep me posted please. Looking forward to hearing more. Wondering what kind of speeds you are able to maintain.

MSI Z370 Gaming Pro Carbon is about the best z370 board ive used to date. Just sayin. So much love on these forums for Asus, and Others, but MSI is almost always overlooked. Had both an Asus and Giga 370 board variants and 1 had ram issues and other couldnt get my cache up to a respectable speed. MSI nailed it on both front with slightly less voltage.... So coming from someone who has had actual experience with 3 different companies offerings, I c an vouch for MSI Pro Carbon hands down.

My nephew has had issues with MSI so i avoid it. Asus has always been good to me except thier onboard Wifi . I had absolutely zero issues with my Z87. It is the best board that I have ever had. If do not sell it, it will become a workstation and a gift to my son when he graduates as an automation engineer. I use the machine for work and gaming. I am about to try it out now with a little Battlefield.

PS: I would be remiss if I did not inform you that currently AI Suite is crashing due to a Windows update issue so I have no health monitoring until there is a fix. Anyone no of a free progy for system temps?
 
Any reason to NOT get the MSI Z370 Gaming Pro AC board? It IS mATX but it seems to have everything I need. Is the overclocking not as good? I don't plan to overclock beyond the absolute basics. Whatever the BIOS will get me without too much stress (as I tend to keep my rig for 4+ years).

So any downsides to getting the m-ATX board?

Do be honest, i did not even look at it. Perhaps I should revisit MSI some day. It just that Asus and EVGA have been very good to me.
 
Get the Asus ROG Hero Maximus for $235

fantastic board, best firmware updates in the industry, high-end sound with build in DAC, overclocking prowess unmatched by any other board manufacturer.

There is an wifi AC version for an additional $35 or so dollars.
 
I've used the Asus ROG boards (Z87 and Z170) and MSI Gaming Pro Carbon (Z270) and other MSI boards (couple different Z77 and Z97s) and all of them are excellent boards. I'm currently using a Gigabyte Aorus (X299) and have used Asus Strix (B350) for AMD. All of these boards have worked without issues and overclocked my CPU's to the limit of what was reasonable to expect for the CPUs. My experience has been that Asus tends to put out more regular bios updates, but I wouldn't NOT buy any of those brands if you find one that meets your specification requirements. I didn't have a good experience with EVGA motherboards, but that was on a much older Z68 board.

Batboy88 is just spewing bullshit (again). Probably best to put him on ignore.

the gaming pro ac is NOT a mATX board... they do make a version that is mATX and I think even a ITX but the z370 Gaming Pro Carbon is NOT mATX... Full size ATX board

Nice board, is it just me or do they all look like they were made at the same factory and then rebadged lol.
 
The two Z370 boards that do seem to go head to head is Asrock Taichi and the Gigabyte Aorus Gaming series.

I have it set to auto / normal and she boots to 4.4 boosting to 4.8. If I manualy choose the xmp profile. she boots to 4.8 and if I set extreme auto she hits 5gz but I am not comfortable there since the board applies 1.404 volts. The BIOS reports 32c at that speed but without my health monitoring software working, I am not sure what the temps will be under load. I'm going to wait until i get it working.

KUDOS to Noctua air cooling and these new chips are magic, this one runs cool. Sorry about the typos using voice to text (fixed) I was on the road.

Once I get AI suite working I will really delve in. I don't want to fly blind

Party time, I downloaded a version that I found on that Asus provided for the Maximus board, i then deleted the set up file from it, dragged and dropped the setup file along with the .dbin from the CD. I opened the system information application exe from the cd and ran that. I then ran the modified AI Suite 3 executable. It worked ! I am able to get real time health information now. I am going to boot to 5gz and play some Battlefield
 
tenths of a megahertz below 5 with auto set to extreme tuning. 1.402 v and 73 c. while gaming. I think this chip could really fly with liquid cooling. and a little rocket science in manual mode. I will leave that for down the road after the novelty of every day 4.4 GHZ at 1.24v and 60 c under load wears off.

4.4 at 60c is a nice position to be in. I guess now I might as well start looking at building. I was debating just buying Dell though spec'd out with a 5 year warranty.. Probably come really close to most of the components and they would have to fix them when they break in the first 5 years.

Idle in XMP profile 1 on air turboing to 4.859GZ or thereabouts. I tried to get the screenshot as it fluctuated but it's hard to do. These chips have alot of head room.

Not exactly everything but pretty close so I'm going to plug this one here: https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Fatal1ty Z370 Gaming-ITXac/
Thunderbolt, usb-c, wifi, intel nic, overclocker stuff, etc and it still all fits on ITX.

You can get 32GB with 2x16 in ddr4 just fine, and it clocks pretty high on intel imcs that are not as picky about dual rank or chip type as long as its not bargain bin.

Dual lan will not speed up your NAS to any one system, need faster ports on both ends. I doubt it actually can get close to 1GbE on anything but sequential anyways.
You could add 10GbE using the thunderbolt port though it ain't cheap, or you can link to other TB3 computers with the virtual nic which is cheap.
 
She is built so that my son and I can game and I will also use it for work.
 
I have really liked my past few Asrock Z170/Z270 boards. I get the Fatality gaming K4/6 series. I think the new Z370 gaming K6 looks good. No wifi(get the Taichi if you really need it), but IMO find a way to run a hard line as all my Wi-Fi experiences have me going back to NIC/LAN as soon as I can. Of course that is for gaming etc... For surfing and work stuff WiFi is fine I guess.
