If you are a Nintendo Switch owner, you will soon be glad to know that you will have another reason to throw it across the room in a fit of rage. Dark Souls Remastered is set to be released on Switch on May 25th. Not familiar with Dark Souls, let me help you.

Nintendo ended today's Direct Mini presentation with a very short trailer and a May 25 release for Dark Souls Remastered. Dark Souls' previous re-release on PC was dubbed the Prepare to Die edition, which makes it sound a separate version of the game. However, in a press release following the Direct, Nintendo clarified that Remastered "includes the Artorias of the Abyss DLC, as well as improved framerate and resolution from the original."

Oh boy improved frame rate. At least the Switch likely can’t push it past 30fps and break the physics.

Supposedly it's running on the Dark Souls 3 engine, so it would support uncapped framerate. Or was it capped to 120 Hz?

Such an unfortunate name for a gaming device.

Every time I hear it I think of this:

Nice, this is a remake of Dark Souls 1 right? Are there plans to remake it for other platforms? I loved DS1, 2 was meh, 3 I just can't get into even though it looks and plays great. Just tired of the formula I guess.

Yes... "Experience the rich world of Dark Souls in upscaled 4K resolution with 60FPS when playing on a PlayStation 4 Pro system, Xbox One X, and PC," switch will be 1080p@30 fps.. I best get on with finishing Dark Souls 3, reinstalled my PC a few times and forgot they moved savefile to local storage.. :-$

I posted a thread literally minutes before Kyle pointing to Kotaku in which they stated it's coming to all current gen systems, and that they plan to bring all 3 DS titles to the Switch.

This was officially announced for all platforms this morning, with 4k 60fps support for PC/PS4 Pro/ XB1X.

I've always been on the fence about this game. You here nothing but amazing things, but the difficulty is a big turn off. Many years ago, every game I played I would play on the highest difficulty, but I think the last game I did that with was The Witcher 2. As I get older I find myself no longer enjoying that. Constantly dying and replaying the same section of game just pisses me off, and it doesn't feel rewarding like it used to when you finally beat something you've been stuck on for ages. Maybe it's just that my backlog has grown too big, but I like playing on an easier difficulty where I can move at a faster pace, enjoy the story, and then move on to the next thing. With no ability to turn down the difficulty on this one, I feel like I'd just get stuck and move on.

So is Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Fe, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition and The World Ends With You Final Remix.

They are definitely not games for everyone. For me, it reminds me of how games used to be where you actually had to be good at them and learn the ins and outs of the game mechanics. In the end, beating the game feels like more of an accomplishment so the whole game lasts in your memory longer. The difficulty is also somewhat overblown, people go in thinking it's a hack and slash, but it is not. It's unforgiving and punishes complacency.

Why do they feel the need to remake old games for newer systems?

Do people really want to buy more copies?

Yes. If you haven't played the Souls series then you wouldn't understand - they're some of my favorite games of all time.

When DS1 came out for PC it was a janky port that required a third party tool to fix for things like 60FPS but it still wasn't perfect. Dark Souls 2 got better in that regard and Dark Souls 3 for PC the engine was perfect. Thus rereleasing DS1 on the DS3 engjne complete with native 4K will be heaven for fans of this series. Can't wait to play through again. If they dropped in higher res textures, even better.

While there might be *some* amount of truth to what you said, for the most part it's not like that. Dark Souls is about learning how the game works and mastering a style of play. In my case, I'm a sword-and-board kind of guy, which means I play defensively and respond to things, often after they've whacked me a couple of times. It doesn't require a lot of twitch skill, but it does require you to think tactically. Other play styles require different sorts of skills, but Dark Souls allows for multiple play styles: you can wield a two-hander, focus on archery, cast miracles or sorcery, go for the swashbuckler style of light shield and rapier, etc.

Enemies are predictable, and once you learn to read their tells, *most* of them aren't too hard to defeat, so long as you are careful. Bosses are the same, but less forgiving if you make a mistake.

A big deal is made of "you will die a lot". And while you'll die, I typically only died "a lot" on certain boss fights. Once you have a good feel for the game's mechanics (such as levelling up your gear), what seems nigh impossible becomes very feasible.

I think that if you have any interest in the style of game that Dark Souls is, which rewards not just skill, but also wise use of your planning and resources, then I would recommend giving it a try. I really like the Dark Souls series of games (including Bloodborne), but as others have said it isn't for everyone.

Well, the original PC port for Dark Souls was a piece of shit that had to be fixed by the community, so I guess this isn't too terrible.

On the whole, though, I agree with you.

a couple of points. dark souls uses "death" as a teaching tool. You learn what does not work and what shortcuts not to take. Dark souls can also be made "easier" by adding summons. In many cases they can take care of the boss, all you have to do is stay alive. This game was responsible for changing the way I viewed gaming.

I can't imagine how anyone can play this game on a Switch!...in terms of layout and mechanics people are going to be throwing their Switch against a wall

Dark Souls is and isn't hard. Its challenging, but not unfairly hard like a lot of old games used to be. There are a couple spots where they throw in some cheap deaths, but they're also done to teach the player to go slow and pay attention. Its a game about taking your time and being patient. They're not for everyone and they do require a lot of time to learn attack patterns and get used to the way everything controls and feels.

I would also like to add that the Souls games are also not about story. If you want a story to casually experience, there is nothing for you. The experience of playing the game, is to unlearn modern gameplay design and re-learn what Dark Souls wants. Dark Souls doesn't care. Dark Souls wants what it wants. And then you are enveloped in atmosphere and mostly excellent art direction. There actually is a whole lot of story and world building. But it is indirect and buried in the game world. A single opening cutscene is the only story exposition you will get. And aside from a few comments from NPCs, you will very rarely be directly told anything about the story/game world. The community spends a lot of time connecting the dots, to eventually parse the stories.

Sorry but Dark Souls has a story, but it's told in a special way.

I picked up the first Dark Souls on steam about a year ago. I've got about 8hours of play time on it. I'm about 10 minutes past the tutorial.

If your telling me the game is broken and the physics don't work at more than 30fps then I feel an awful lot better about myself.

Here I was just telling myself to "get gud". Wow.

The question is do I write off the franchise and say that "I don't suck" because of a bad port?

Or do I pick up the remaster and actually learn I'm terrible and no longer have an excuse?

Decisions, decisions...

I love watching the community put together the lore of the Souls games and Bloodbourne. They're some of the few games that really use the strengths of the medium to tell their stories in a way that no other form of entertainment can.

Try it without forcing it to run at 60fps. Though, it looks like the remaster will only be $20 on Steam if you own the first one so if you want to suck with proper 60fps support at least it's not expensive. At least its less than the $40 I'll be paying to be terrible at the game on the Switch.

I never got into Dark Souls at all myself, so I couldn't say. You do what feels right to you. ;)

RE: DS story/lore - I'm sure there is some, but from my several hours attempting to play it I never really got much story out of the game itself.

Ok, the 30/60 fps, I think 60 is only available if you installed dsfix, not otherwise. The only problems it should be causing would be with some long jumps or maybe sliding down a ladder. If you did not install it then you may want to.

For story, DS has a very rich story but it is not told in the usual way. It is told primarily through item descriptions, also in some cases from item locations. Most of the NPCs you meet will have a story arc, and.... they are mostly bad outcomes. There are plenty of youtube series that discuss (and sometimes enact) the lore.

Tried this game years ago. The difficulty combined with the checkpoint system was frustrating and took the fun out of it. It is too bad the game did not have an "easy mode". That way folks could have moved the game difficulty setting higher after getting good. An analogy for Dark Souls would be having Halo games with only the "legendary" difficulty setting. I played and beat the Halo games on "legendary" eventually. But that was after first playing them on the lower difficulty levels in order to learn the game mechanics and level designs.

Every game out there doesn't need to cater to everyone. Dark Souls is obviously not for you.

Easy mode: use soul to turn human (or ember in later games), summon help, let them destroy mobs and then boss (not 100% since bosses will scale)

No embers/souls or want to learn level/help others: Put down white soapstone sign. Go into other game, learn enemy locations, how to fight boss. Help kill boss to turn human/get ember.

It is a system that works pretty well
