I upgraded back in 2012 to an FX-8350. I currently have 16gb of ram, an nvidia GTX 970 and a nice Samsung SSD.

My system is used primarily for World of Warcraft, Photoshop, Lightroom, and Premiere. I do quite a bit of multitasking.

I’m looking at Ryzen 5 1600X and the cost for the CPU, mobo, and ram (fuck you DDR4 pricing) is $617 out the door. This also includes an AM4 bracket for my current CPU cooler.

Will the cost justify the performance in your opinion? I looked at the 1700X, but I’m mitigating ram prices by considering the 1600X.

Thoughts?

Yea its worth it but if u are in no hurry i wait and try and catch the chips on sale. Microcenter if u have one
near u is the route to go.

Also Ryzen stuff is really sensitive to memory if u want the best speed. 3200 gskill cas 14 stuff is great if u can
find it and stomach the cost.

For $617, no

I’m not in a rush unless ram prices go higher. Lol

If you can stretch it, go for the 1700 instead. Will give you good boosts all around and just OC it to 3.9-4ghz to get the most out of it. Grab a B350 board too, don't need an X370 necessarily. (Unsure what you were looking at before).

3200C14 RAM is ideal but pricing is bad.

Edit: If you're near a Microcentre theres' the Asus Prime B350-Plus board and R7 1700 looks like a great deal?!

Save 30 off when going there??

Ryzen has a pretty massive IPC advantage, you're talking double performance in multithreaded workloads and ~50-60% improvement in general single-threaded work.

Is it worth it? That's up to you. My old 8120 and 8320 rigs are still going strong and make perfectly good 1080p gaming machines even with their crap IPC.

Probably not worth it right now unless money is plentiful.

I recently had a similar dilemma. Keep my oldish FX-8320e VM test box with 32gb of DDR3 OR retire/sell it and upgrade to either R1600 or R1700 on a Microcenter bundle. DDR4 is just STUPIDLY expensive right now, between 2 and 3 times what I paid 2 years ago. 16gb of the cheapest DDR4 I could find was Crucial 2400 for $165 (bundle discount if purchased with mobo combo, otherwise $179). 32GB was $330. This is not great ram, I doubt it would do much over the advertised 2400.

I decided to stick with the FX for now, soley because of the ram. Hopefully ram prices will come down at some point. Just couldn't justify the $150-200 DDR4 price gouge tax right now. I have other things I can drop that coin on, like food or beer.

What motherboard and ram are you looking at? $617 seems pretty steep for a 1600x + mobo/ram. I'd suggest you watch the F/S forums. Someone sold a Ryzen 1600 for $165 earlier today and i bought a Ryzen 1700 for $225. Motherboards in B350 and X370 can vary widely depending on what you need. There is someone selling a B350M Asus prime for $55, someone selling an MSI gaming pro carbon X370 for $105 etc. Ram is a bit tougher to find a decent deal on, but if you look around you can find 3000ish 16gb kits in the $200 range.

So at minimum:

$100ish for X370 board
$225ish for a 1600x
$200ish for 16gb ram

Just watch the forums, good deals come up often

Again, not in a hurry. Current rig is running without issues.

Drop the board to B350 and swap the extra cash for a 1700.. Non X. If you're using your own cooler, the 1700x presents very little value.

Alternatively be even cheaper and grab the 1600 non-x too. OC yourself.

B350 + 1600 + whatever RAM you could drop your price significantly..

If you're gonna go Ryzen, think about splurging on 3000 or 3200 RAM for the performance boost. The CPUS can be overclocked to get your boost in speed but performance bumps with Ram speed. I would wait for the April refresh and price drops on last gen gear. Don't think RAM will get much higher but you never know. Actually 8350 is pretty good just not the best gear.

Like mentioned above, just wait if you can. Yes, Ryzen is a HUGE increase over FX, but DDR4 prices are insane just like GPU prices right now. They will come back down. Also, if and when you do upgrade, definitely go 1700 over 1600X. You'll be far more future proof with the extra core count.

Not bad. Not bad at all. Though, I do need at minimum 6 sata ports. 8 preferred. But I can live with 6.

I would make sure that the ram can function at that speed on the motherboard mentioned. Current AM4 motherboards can be rather picky with ram and it can cause some problems you would rather avoid ...
It seems that the only ones that have less problems are Samsung B die based ram but those tend to be in the higher priced bracket.
as Gigaextreme1 stated those are the speeds the rest currently has little to no use except for competitive benchmarking. This however may change when new motherboards (470) and or Ryzen chips arrive ...

The Ryzen 1600 will run rings around the FX 8350 in practically everything so of the two its a massive upgrade

I fully agree with this.

I'm not sure if most will trust/believe gamegpu, but they do have lots of nice benchmarks and charts.
In games that are not highly threaded a Ryzen 1200 can beat the 8350 because of it's better IPC. The new world of tanks seems like a good example: http://gamegpu.com/action-/-fps-/-tps/assassin-s-creed-origins-2017-test-gpu-cpu
For more highly threaded games a 1300X will match or slightly beat the 8350. See Assassin's Creed Origins: http://gamegpu.com/action-/-fps-/-tps/assassin-s-creed-origins-2017-test-gpu-cpu
Any 6 or 8 core Ryzen should be a huge upgrade and work well for years without being a bottleneck.

completely agree with everyone.. replace the 8350 with either a 1600 or 1700 OR wait for the ryzen refresh in april if you're not desperately needing the upgrade.. as far as ram goes, yeah the prices are insane but if you don't need the absolutely bleeding edge of performance and are willing to lose 2-3% keep an eye out for the gskill ripjaw V 3000 or 3200. both go on sale all the time since they're hynix chips which will not run 3200mhz on current gen ryzen. i honestly can't tell the difference between 3200 and 3000 but at 130-140 dollars for 2x8GB it's worth the annoyance.

I think the memory thing is overblown, a person can still get copious performance out of a 2600 or 2800 kit even using 8GB is still perfectly fine with SSD's eating up most OS I/O overheads it is ultimately down to use, if you can run 16GB it gives lots of extra room though with speed I haven't seen any real vindication on speed really making much difference outside a memory bound benchmark.

Jesus, WTH is with these ram prices? Last april I was able to get An Asrock B350 Board AND 16GB Team Vulcan DDR4 3000Mhz ram for a total of $190.

Yea current ram prices are ridiculous especially for the 3000+ stuff

If you're worried about DDR4 prices going up, buy the kit you want now and sit on it. As for the CPU, I'd wait for the April desktop refresh and pick up Z+ respin. Since you aren't in a hurry, might as well wait for the best version of the CPU to drop in a couple months. It won't be *worse* than what's available now and it may well be measurably better in just a couple months.

Yeah. The 2x16 DDR4 3000 I have sitting in my R7 I picked up on sale for $210 about 18 months ago. Same kit was just under $400 on black friday sale a month ago.

From a money perspective, I don't really think it is worth it. Yeah it will be faster, but your life wont change much. I think a better reason to upgrade it reliability. 5 years is when drivers often get problematic and things like power supplies and motherboards start getting flaky. You can putter along for 1 or 2 more years until RAM prices drop, but there is always the increasing chance of a hardware fail due to plain old longevity.

The upgrade is worth it. However don't bother with 1600x, get vanilla 1600, put the saved money towards a good cooler and overclock it. They are both exactly the same CPU, the X version is just binned higher so it works with faster clocks at stock voltages but when you get into serious overclocking there is not a damn difference between them. From either model you may win a silicon lottery and get a golden chip that gets into 4.0ghz without a problem or a dud that maxes out at 3.8 unless you do absurd voltage boosts.

That said, while any Ryzen is a ridiculous performance boost over FX8350 it is true that AMD is about to release a refresh in couple of months. With any luck, this will bring a slight clockspeed boost making the performance gains even bigger. If not, then you may get a 2017 Ryzen cheaper anyway. AMD already announced that they are cutting the prices down.

I would wait til the refresh comes out in a couple months unless your shit is dead. You would get as much out of it with the platform upgrade. Get at least 3000mhz memory and would recommend to proably get it now. Prices will do nothing but keep going up. Lot of people going to be doing a upgrade from old systems I think this time around and demand will be even higher for memory.

Sounds like waiting for the refresh is the way to go. I’ve waited six years so what’s a couple of months?

True that Zen + is out in April and worth waiting for but for purposes of answering the thread question the 1600(X) is like 2x faster than teh 8350X in parallel loads (maybe even more than that) while its like 45% faster in single threaded loads and about 60-70% more efficient in the process. It is a slam dunk when it comes to is a 1600 worth it, hell yes no debate needed.

Oh it's huge Upgrade...I still got a great binned 9590 and it's still Badddd. Bulldozer/Piledriver was just baddd in General.
