Anyone know how to reset the password on a Dell 15 5000 Gaming laptop? It's the password prompt that shows up after the DELL splash screen. It has the service tag number above the area where you type the password in.Laptop is currently running Windows 10

In most cases, you pretty much have to replace the motherboard on a laptop with a forgotten system password.

Actually, you can probably call Dell tech support and they'll give you a reset code and walk you through resetting it after they verify that you're the owner of the laptop. But it would be easier to replace the motherboard.

Not on laptops. They usually store the password in the flash chip itself to keep it from being reset in the even it's lost or stolen.
I'm referring to laptops but it's been a long time since I've seen someone ask this so maybe it's changed nowadays.

They started doing on consumer laptops about 10 years ago, but it became pretty much ubiquitous when UEFI took over.

Have you considered calling Dell and providing that service tag number? I would think going there first would be paramount.

if you own the laptop and have proof of purchase it shouldn't cost anything.
no idea.

I didn't know that either. We used to reset it on the latitudes we had for work. They have to have an enterprise tool to bypass that though...
