every pascal card i have owned has noticeable coil whine

I know it sounds crazy HoffY, but it might be another component. I have an SSD (1 of 3) that is audible when reading or writing. I have a sound damped case (Fractal Define XL) that muffles it when the sides are on, but if I have the side off I can hear that particular drive. I thought I was crazy, but it's confirmed by others... Any power circuit could be doing it is what I'm saying...
 
Bit iof a necro but I've got the same thing on my 1080Ti FE, I never noticed because my sides were off as I tried to lock in my OC.

I'm on full water so it must be the phase control on the GPU, it's directly linked to load. If I do the tesselation burner test on MSI I can really hear it, a few of the other stres tests make it audible.

That's even at stock settings. Don't really care but it is bizzare.
 
I haven't had coil whine since my GTX 680s. Maybe I'm just lucky.
 
I don't understand how sensitive you people are. I have coil on my 1080 and can only hear it if I go looking for it and put my ear near my tower. My hearing is not the greatest but damn people.

The loudest thing in my PC now is the whirring of my fans, and I can't hear them unless I put my ear right up to my case.
 
I've heard serious coil whine and it can piss you off.
Depends how bad it is and the situ it is in.
I've only had cards with mild whine, my 1080ti is pretty quiet and 3 metres away so all good.
 
The only card I've owned that had coil whine was a GTX 650 and it dissapeared after a driver update.

I have a GTX1070 and GTX1070Ti and no coil whine on different pcs.
 
I can't remember the last time I've had a GPU that I can't get to produce coil whine, if I want to make it happen. However in actual usage it's never been a problem for me. Ever since 2014 I'd had a g-sync monitor so I haven't heard the high framerate whine in a long time for example. But if I disable g-sync yes, I can make it happen in a few game menus.

There are a few instances where my 1080 ti will make a very faint coil whine (as in - when I bring people over they can never hear it and if there's any sound coming out of my speakers/headphones I can't hear it either), but it's limited to a handful of applications really. I haven't tried swapping PSU, rocking the same one since 2012, because it's working well after all so why bother.

Now that I think about it, I did get coil whine out of my GTX 970s when I ran Furmark for about 30 seconds.
 
I have tinnitus and get ringing with migraines, and notice coil whine very differently than both. I get a little whine from my cpu running hard on a x99 board, but it is nothing compared to the whine from my titan xp when it's running. Both on water so it's very noticeable. I also have a titan v that I can't hear but then again when I get it going I set it up to 95% fan speed. Linus tech tips says his v was whiney but I will need a water block to notice it vs the fan. Not positive it's related but I'm someone who can't be near an induction grill because it's so loud, and that's a similar sound imo.
 
limiting your fps to that of your display will greatly reduce coil whine...

Yea i get migrains to or used to mine are better but i had to replace all my fans in my case because they drove me nuts and made my head hurt worse people that dont experince dont have any idea how much pain it can cause.

Good to know, I've got a high refresh monitor so it's not like it will cause a problem.

In fairness it's only really when I was tuning everything in that I noticed it, if it wasn't on water it wouldn't be noticeable but I've got a dual 360's and my fans are at like 4.2v 95% of the time so it's pretty quiet. As a rule the noise from my Vive lighthouses is WAY more annoying, they often decide they don't want to sleep.
