Electricity use per month: 5,140 kWh
Electricity cost per month: $482
Top Tier Electric Bill Rate: .06 kWh
Gross Profit per month: $5-$6K

------

I put my first video cards to mining in June. (1080TI) - sortly after a couple Fury X.
You can tell I started mining in earnest with a couple racks of cards in Sept of this year, and added a rack of 12 RX580's in late Nov. (I've already sold them for various reasons -- I'll be Nvidia only going forward)

For the most recent power usage charges these are the cards I was using:
12 Sapphire Nitro + RX580 - 8gb
12 EVGA 1060 minis - 6gb
7 Misc 1080ti (EVGA, PNY, MSI)
7 PNY XLR8 1080ti
(and another 1080ti in my gaming rig, which mines on the side)

Residential rates in my area are cheap in winter.

As an interesting side note - I'm pulling enough electricity to be in the 2nd or 3rd tier of the commercial power tiers in my area! :O

Damn, you have cheap electric Archaea!!!

Here's mine:

Energy Usage 2017.png

I started mining in July, then heavily overclocked during August and September. Those months my bill was well over $300. In October, I power limited and got my bill down to around $150 - 200, which is not much more than usual.

The other day, I switched the power plan, which should allow me to build a new rig or two and still not be as expensive than before (in terms of kWh). Now to just wait to find video cards that don't cost an arm and a leg.

Not sure about you but my local Craigslist has had really reasonable cards. Also, microcenter open box deals are very good if you have one near you.

So, before the current round of mining - my bill was ~70 a month or so @ .13c kW/h delivered.

That bill below generates ~5k+ / m in BTC when BTC is 16k+

My fiance has had a much larger affect on the electric bill than any mining operation. Every thing electric she owns gets randomly plugged in (laptops, chargers, hair dryers, curlers, etc). At least three lights in the house are on at any given moment. There's a heater, humidifier, and fan blowing... Oven is on...(not cooking anything mind you)... While windows are open "because the kitchen is too hot". Not to mention the toilet is perpetually flushing, toilet paper is a daily roll change (there's TWO of us in the house ffs).

Sounds like you really like her

I use slightly more power mining than i would have heating the place. Bonus all around since i get a nice toasty house and I'm making money. I would never turn my heat up to 75F in winter.

I need more miners.... It's 63 in here at night.

yeah mine was 66 when I came back after being gone for the weekend here in michigan.

Haha, in the past couple of weeks? Because that's impressive with this ~0 degree weather we've been having.

Also, out of curiosity, what are you paying for power in Michigan? I'm roughly at 14 cents.

is that the before fees or after fees rate? ("delivery" etc)

Even though SCE has a (crappy) web interface that shows daily usage, I've been meaning to put something in place for local logging that can meter-by-outlet and has a web interface.

Right now I just use a couple "dumb" APC PDU's that pull around 28A @ 220v; obviously when you're rolling 4-6 rigs and 5000-10000Watts then you're beyond the $20 kill-a-watt clones with WiFi. Still looking.

Edit: Looks like my APC AP7811's does support network management and metering, will have to dig into the terminal.

can you explain what the apc PDUs do?

It's a power strip for 240V. I think I paid $75 for an APC AP7811 off ebay.

I've been kicking myself for not installing a 240V receptacle for my garage servers years ago - it's magical. Power supplies run slightly more efficiently at 220-240V, and with a 30A breaker you're nearly quadrupling your usable watts when coming from a regular 110V/15A line (5280 watts vs 1440 watts). Cost me $15 in raw materials (wire and 30A double-pole circuit breaker) and 20 minutes of labor.

200-240V is a total no-brainer for mining, even for a single rig.

damn, I saw one on craigslist for 100 bucks and couldn't figure out what it did. Was part of a rack system and said "batteries arent included" so I figured it was incomplete.

I quit years ago when the cost for power outweighed any profits for mining. Would there still be a mining incentive if your power cost 3 times as much?

3 times as much as what?

a 1080TI @ $800 would pay for itself mining (at today's rates***) in about 5 months @ $0.60 per KWh.

Right but it would bump up the cost of electricity for everything else too since everything would be stuck in a higher tier.

Not sure how to use the calculator because the more you use the more expensive power gets.

https://www.sdge.com/sites/default/files/regulatory/1-1-18 Schedule DR Total Rates Table.pdf

right now I can stay in tier 1 & 2 with regular household usage, but once I get pushed into the higher tier the cost to operate everyhing goes way up. Currently paying about $100 a month for power + $250-$300 for the solar loan which is what keeps me in tier one and two instead of a constant 4.

However, with the calculator above and my current old 290x, it calculates my profits would be negative $17 a month hah.

I see what you're saying. Unless you build a big enough mining rig to offset the rest of the costs, it looks cost prohibitive if you end up just barely bumping up into that high usage tier.

I need to find a used model S with free supercharging hah

Not necessarily. Where I live I actually get a break (they call it Power Cost Adjustment) the more I use. Before I started mining I was paying about $0.12 per kWh. Now that I'm using about 3x the power (6,000 kWh vs. 2,000 kWh per month), I'm only paying $0.10 per kWh. It's the same 24/7/365. Gotta love the rural electric co-op's!

Here in Manitoba we pay 7 cents a kWh, and i am curious to see the impact mining will have on my bill. ( i currently have a tiny 4 card rig running a mix of 290's and 380's) fwiw, i also have a hot tub that pisses 5kW of heat into the atmosphere in -30 weather when we are using it lol... my thought is the rig does act as a supplementary heat source, and even though natural gas is cheaper I am curious to see the overall impact on my next statement.

If only they could design a computer that put out cold instead of heat for the summer months. I know i know. Physics.

Lol, no doubt. right now i am pretty content with the temps the cards are running at but come summer I'm going to have to have to consider where to move this setup for the sake of temps.

Yeah, that's why I'm setting up mine in the basement. Maybe I'll have warmer floors in the winter months lol. Right now it's only 2x 1080 though.

I'm actually quite suprised, the rig has taken my otherwise cold utility room to a pleasant temp.

Hmm.. had a brown out today at my place. Maybe 2 mining rigs is too much? I just started the 2nd rig 1 day ago.

Wow those monthly bills are quite a bit lower than what I would have guessed.

Current bill for September 2018:
Oct_2018.png

58 cards - 16 1070, 37 1070 Ti, 5 1080

This setup still pulls the equivalent of ~600-800ish USD profit / month after electrical.

~.2-.25 btc / month on average.
