Trump Wants Postal Service to Charge “Much More” for Amazon Shipments

The USPS is able to borrow over $15 billion from the US treasury at an extremely low interest rate (1.2%). It is not directly tax payer funded, but tax payers do shoulder the burden when they borrow money. The government also gives them $2.8 BILLION in tax breaks per year.

http://fortune.com/2015/03/27/us-postal-service/

That's nothing, that's the peanuts. This is who's really funding the loses;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Postal_Service#Budget
In 2016, the USPS had its fifth straight annual operating loss, in the amount of $5.59 billion, of which $5.8 billion was the accrual of unpaid mandatory retiree health payments

They are stealing the money from the retirement benefits of their own employees.

let me see if I understand this topic correctly. I currently have to pay $20 to ship a 1 lb box 8" x 10" x 12" in size using UPS or Fedex and now I need to be charged the same overpricing by USPS? Is that part of the President's plan to help the Middle Class?
As more and more people buy online and less and less buy locally why is it the price of shipping is so stupid high and yet, we keep buying online?

Cunningham's Law states "the best way to get the right answer on the internet is not to ask a question; it's to post the wrong answer.

yea, that law has worked wonders to alleviate factual errors on the internet ... you post a wrong answer and then you get 7 others who post wrong answers about your wrong answer and then the best wrong answer is dubbed BEST ANSWER in the thread

I hate to break it to you but the Allies were winning the WW2 when the US joined the fight. This notion that the US turned the tide and won the war simply isn't accurate. If our schools were more interested in teaching history rather than romanticizing it into a Disney movie for kids we wouldn't have been taught so much crap about history when we were younger.

Well, yeah, the Russians were in the process of beating the Germans back.

Would you really have wanted Stalin to liberate Europe from the Germans though? The second half of the 20th century would have looked QUITE different if that had happened.

I mean, wizzi01 was pretty much being a twat with that statement, but we shouldn't understate the importance of U.S. involvement in WWII.

So many people do not understand the President's tactic. He just says something arbitrary. And then stands back while everyone makes a mad dash to prove him wrong and in the process it creates a lengthy discussion all through out the country.

Cunningham's Law states "the best way to get the right answer on the internet is not to ask a question; it's to post the wrong answer."

He says Amazon is the problem, a simple claim. Now all of you clamor over each to give the "right answer". The discussion happened. People learned stuff, whether they admit it or not (like the China ebay subsidizing).

246 characters and a couple minutes and the whole country is talking. But yet, Trump doesn't know what he's doing.

Amazon seems to be hiring contractors to deliver packages. These contractors end up offloading to sub contractors and they try to stiff them on their pay. A friend of mine did it for a while and every week they would try to not pay him.

I've met a few of them on route and chatted with them. They are getting fucked over big time but they want to work and are trying. Amazon is going to have to go this bizarre contractor to a contractor route because the Teamsters are going to try to unionize anything else.

Will it work?

Fed ex has done it to some extent. But they match our wages, even exceed them. Just not our benefits. And the Teamsters aren't going away. Even though the democrats have abandoned their working class base for psychotic racist sexist politics.

If Amazon does anything other then sub contractor with another sub contractor and another, layers and layers of no responsibility, we will go unionize them in a private non government union. They have nothing to lose here. And we are used to the fight to have our voices heard.

And hey we'll still have our place. You will get your package, or we will pay for it. Honestly the overwhelming majority of my boxes are business to business. The other day I had 4 150 pound boxes that were next day air for sewage pumps. Seriously that's like $1800 in shipping costs. No sub contractor of a sub contractor who just wants a job is going to make sure that shit is there at 9am. Or pick that shit up and move it in their car and come back tomorrow.

The lowest of the full time employees tops out at $27.13 for a level 3, and those aren't carriers. Even custodians are level 4's. Government payscales don't go super high though and they cap you earlier in years in exchange for a nice retirement.

Also, if you think 45 hours is a rough week with overtime, I got news for you with that whole "we work harder" thing.

How many hours do they have you guys working?

Honestly here the Amazon doing their own delivery thing has really changed my hours. Last year during peak I was out till 11 pm often. 60 hours a week every week for two months.

This year? My God I got to spend time with my family.

Amazon is bigger than Govt.

As mentioned if Trump wants to cause trouble (he doesn't he is just bullshitting for his dwindling fans) they will do just like they have done in most other countries and just use private companies and individuals to deliver.

About 1 in 20 of my Amazon deliveries is by Royal Mail here in the UK.

Amazon doesnt need anyone outside Amazon.

amazon is bigger than gov't?

didn't the us government lose 21,000 times jeff bezos net worth like it was a five dollar bill?

I'm doing 65-70 a week because I refuse to do more. Most guys do 12x7, I easily doubled my salary this year which was nice but I like my time off too. You are right about one thing, the USPS attaracts slackers who want to ride on an easy government job that they can't really get fired from, I see them all the time. But most of us aren't like that and we absolutely despise the ones that are. Just nothing you can really do about them, the union covers for them.

If Bezos deicided to move Amazon's main operations outside of the US Trump and Congress would be licking Bezzo's asshole to stay.

That's real power.

If the USPS started charging everyone more, say $2-3 for an envelope, I would be perfectly fine with that. It would mean I would get considerably less junk mail.

that is where math starts to fail though. They would need to loss almost none being sent now in order for a price hike to bring in more money. Otherwise if you double or triple cost and lose half or 60% of the business you have you are still making the same amount.

It is a damn shame that the main stream media has this much pull that they are able to form your outlook on the President of the USA, Donald Trump. No, he is not a horrible person nor is he an open racist but hey, just so long as it lets you sleep better at night, eh? The fact that he interjects things is not a issue I have with him because he is not interjecting himself into stuff he has no need to be in. (Think Boston College Professor, Trayvon Martin and many other such things.)
Are you by chance the minister of the westboro baptist church? Because you sound like one of those lunatics that protest outside funnerals.

LOL...
Oh, this was serious. Not only did we make the difference, Churchill's entire hope was predicated on the US joining. Even before then we had been keeping ALL fronts propped up with Lend/Lease programs and other forms of supplies without which the Allies would have been crushed long before the US did join.

Yeah, that must be it. Either that or I am fully capable of thinking beyond the media...........

Not when Trump charges a tariff on imported goods wherever Amazon is based out of.

Then Amazon is handily replaced by another company..

Thank you free market.

You're high if you think the Lend Lease program propped all of the fronts up. Less than 1.5% of the war's small arms and it's estimated that only 7% of what we sent to the Soviet Union actually made it there with the bulk of it arriving after the war shifted toward the Allies. What we sent over was a very, very small part of the war and a lot of it never even made it there.

By the time American entered the war the Axis powers were spread so thin things weren't looking up for them. America's involvement didn't end the war, it merely shortened it as the Allies were winning the battle of attrition rather handily.

The American education system is simply awful about teaching fairy tales. We were told the North freed all of the slaves, Paul Revere successfully warned everyone the British were coming, we single handedly beat the British, Europe would be speaking German without us, and Thanksgiving...well, that entire lesson was B.S. from start to finish.

He has the foresight to confirm his openly bigoted and severely ignorant views directly via his twitter feed and in his speeches.

The moment you make a comment, the way you did, it is best to not read the rest. (Shows your point of view and the fact that you take your orders from the MSM.) Only other way you could know about him is if you meet him personally and got to know him yourself. Did you?

The postal entity is the only government or private body that I know of that is required to prefund 75 years worth of retiree benefits.

What company out there do you think that would be profitable having to sit on 75 years worth of worth of cash and not being able to do anything with it??

The "MSM" is straight video of a speech now? Are you claiming the MSM is now editing videos with CGI and faking the speeches Trump makes? Or that his Tweets are fake?

Otherwise, you're claiming that unless we agree with you, our opinion based on words directly out of Trump's mouth are MSM/fake news/whatever the new buzz word is?

This is accurate. The allies were winning the war, but it was entirely on the backs of the Soviets. There is a reason they lost more than 20 million lives in that war.

The U.K. was browbeaten by the German air campaign, and starved by unrestricted submarine warfare taking out convoys going across the Atlantic (the only ones getting through doing so with a heavy combination of US/UK naval escorts). Other allies were either completely occupied by the Germans (France, Greece, Netherlands, etc.) or too distant with too small of a force contribution to have a major impact on the European theater (Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, etc.)

The U.S. involvement in the European theater in WWII was much more about preventing postwar Soviet occupation of Western Europe than it was about defeating the Nazis, and it turns out it was the right call, seeing what happened to the eastern bloc after the war. If not for the U.S. involvement in Europe in WWII D-Day would likely never have happened, and the entirety of Europe would likely have been "liberated" by the Soviets and had puppet soviet governments installed for the remainder of the 20th century, just like Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Ukraine etc.)

Without the U.S. Presence in Europe after D-Day in 1944, the Allied leaders would never have been able to negotiate the western "spheres of influence" at the Yalta conference in 1945.

So, western Europe does owe its freedom in the latter half of the 20th century to the U.S, just its freedom from Communism, not from Nazism.

Further, the complete wreckage of Europe, Russian and Japanese industrial capacity meant that the US was now the uncontested supplier of the world by default, building up the wealth that would make us into a superpower.

But instead of continuing to reinvest that, we thought that spike in wealth was purely due to our own prowess, and have continued to use up the investment the greatest generation made in our countries infrastructure, education, and people, without even putting back in enough money to replace said infrastructure, much less improve it.

It is clear that you hate orange people, ergo - bigot.

Definition of bigot
: a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (such as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance

PS: if you think Oblamer or Hilljack aren't bigots you should drink some of the Jim Jones brand purple kool-aid.

PPS: "members of a group" like deplorable Americans, bitter clingers, etc.

PPPS: but what should we expect from a guy who calls himself -

The high deaths were indicative of losing. The bombing campaign from England shutdown Germany's industry and they ran out of everything and started losing everywhere. But dream on for you Red Heroes saving the day.

This is a false equivalency and you know it.

There is a huge difference between identifying and opposing people you disagree with, and categorizing people based on physical attributes they have no control over and treating them differently because of this.

It is perfecrly OK to disagree with people and judge their character based on their opinions.

It is never OK to do the same based on attributes such as gender, sex, age, race, etc.

If you can't see the difference here, you are way off the unsalvageable deep end.

But dream on for you Red Heroes saving the day.

I post about how the U.S. should be appreciated for it's heroism in keeping the communists out of Western Europe and you accuse me of being a communist sympathizer?

Someone might need to do some work on their reading comprehension :p

I know where this bullshit narrative about about Losses = War Contribution comes from.

"No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. You won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country."
- George S. Patton.

Inflicted losses are the correct measure.

This page seems to address that in a pretty decent writeup, although not going through the effort of checking the sources he uses:

The high deaths were indicative of losing. The bombing campaign from England shutdown Germany's industry and they ran out of everything and started losing everywhere. But dream on for you Red Heroes saving the day.

Furthermore,

We all know you don't win wars from the air. It requires "boots on the ground".

The Red Army had 11.5 million of them.

The Red Army was very weak in the early days of their involvement in WWII, in large part due to Stalin's purge of the officer corps, insufficient weaponry due to their factories being bombed out by the Germans, and outdated heavy weaponry such as Tanks. In some cases in early 1941 they famously didn't even have enough rifles for all the men sent into battle, instructing them to pick up rifles from fallen comrades. (though the prevalence of this is often exaggerated in Hollywood and urban legends)

By 1944-1945 - however - they had 11.5 million men led by young talented and battle hardened officers. The factories previously bombed by the Germans had been moved east of the Ural mountain range and was out of range of the Luftwaffe and able to massively supply their forces. As a result their forces were fully equipped with excellent small arms (particularly notable was the ppsh submachine gun which was way ahead of its time) and ammunition, and absolutely MASSIVE quantities of reasonably modern tanks. In fact, between 1941 and 1945 the soviets manufactured some 110,000 tanks. (!! This is a ridiculously large quantity. Compare this to the current U.S. Military which has about 1260 active tanks)

They would have absolutely rolled over Europe if not for the U.S. led invasion starting with D-Day. Sure the UK and US bombing campaign helped bring the pain, but if not for U.S. ground forces western Europe would have looked very different in the second half of the 20th century.

If USPS is to charge more then hopefully they improve their shitty service as well. Never had as many issues with FedEx or UPS than with USPS. Not even close.

What are you talking about? The USPS is one of the most reliable services in this country. It should be funded by taxpayers because everyone uses it.

USPS isn't losing money on Amazon shipments, it's one of their biggest sources of revenue. Once again our POTUS tweets without asking anyone around him for facts. The biggest revenue loss for USPS stems from the congressional restrictions placed on them. They are forbidden from charging competitive rates on large package shipping, because Congress doesn't want them competing with FedEx etcetera. They attempted to reduce hours to bring labor costs under control and ended up having to service 7 days a week. They deliver envelopes to everywhere in the US in 3 days or less at cost and have not been allowed to raise prices to balance out increasing costs or carry a surplus to handle future cost increases. The Postal Service has it's issues, but if you just look through how badly Congress has beaten them up over the last 20 years, it's a damn miracle they manage to do what they do.

Yeah, the government doesn't want to fund the USPS and yet they restrict them on what they can and can't charge. Pensions have to be funded (as required by the government) yet they can't raise postage rates without government approval. They can't cut services to cut costs so the only way for them to to increase hours to take on more work.

Either you make it completely private or completely government run. Don't half ass it. However, every other country in the world, the postal service is a government service.
This is the same shit as Amtrak. Make it private or fund it.

Actually it's the opposite - they're taking that loss because they're putting that $5.8B into an account in cash to prefund their requirement to hold 75 years worth of healthcare benefits for their employees.

I think the point I was actually driving at is, maybe the cash bleed isn't so much about what they do or don't charge delivering packages, but how they manage their other affairs.

Not that I think they are doing the delivery business particularly well, just that there is more to it than just delivery charges.

Definitely agree. As a quasi-governmental agency that is so critical, I don't think they should be unionized (don't think any government or monopoly employees should be able to unionize, as a government entity can just levy more taxes instead of simply failing).

That being said, they have a very unique account requirement that has been placed solely on them by Congress to, in a 10-year period, place 75 years worth of cash away to be able to fund 75 years worth of health benefits for employees and retirees.

With the numbers you gave, that accrual was the entire amount of their loss for that year.

I've worked with four different post offices across three different states over the past 10 years. Every single one has either lost or incorrectly delivered at least two or three of my packages (these were inbound packages). One of which was a $430 package that was delivered to a house down the street. I also can't count the number of times they pretended to try and deliver a heavy package but said I wasn't home so they wouldn't have to carry it to my door. That way I'd have to come pick it up from them. Unfortunate for them I work from home most days and make sure they don't pull this stunt twice.

Also, whenever I went to the actual post office location they were some of the slowest, laziest, and inconsiderate people I ever worked with. Never had a single issue with FedEx or UPS.

Maybe your luck with the post office is better. I wouldn't give the ones I worked with a penny more of my money.

Oh, they actually try to deliver your packages?

All they ever do for me is leave little pink notes in my mail box telling me how they tried to deliver my package and will try again in two days .... giving me ample time to just go pick the damned thing up myself if I fucking want it within the time frame that shipping paid for it to be delivered within.

How fucking thoughtful of them.

We've had multiple similar experiences. The most ridiculous one was on a day I was off and was monitoring our tracking. We have an external glass front door and it was a spring day so I left our main door open. We also have a window that faces the neighborhood lock boxes. I remember seeing the carrier go to the lock boxes around mid day. A few minutes later our package was listed as delivered to 'front door'. Not!. I walked to the boxes and nothing there either. I immediately called the office and they told me to wait 24-48 hours to see if it 'appears'. Nothing still. A couple of days later I called again and they said sometimes a driver may mark something as delivered but still have it on truck if they get swamped- - -WTF! They said give it a week. A week later still nothing, I filed a complaint, also for a re-order on the Items I ordered. Two days later the original order just appears in the lock box. I was able to get the re-order cancelled in time before they had been shipped. Many phone calls, emails, and days later it was finally resolved.

the post office is stupid in general... they got huge obligations they cannot meet and are horrible at being competitive...
