Silicon Valley’s Next Big Idea: Untreated Drinking Water

While my first instinct is to mock those who drink pathogen-filled water, I wonder if it is actually the key to our evolution. It may be part of an evolutionary process that is normally slow and takes thousands and thousands of years.

But every few hundred millennia, evolution leaps forward...

The first 28 years of my life I drank nothing but well water aka raw water and unfiltered city water makes me sick from all the stuff they add to it. The same for much of the bottled water on the market even some so called "spring water". I either drink filtered city water or some brands of bottled spring water these days. How people can drink the crap that comes out of the facets in most towns and cities is beyond me!!!

I can't stand city water. Turn it on and all I can smell is chlorine. I'll keep my well water, thanks.

I've been drinking well water, unfiltered and untreated, for a couple decades. It's never caused a problem. I do live in a rural area, though. If I try the town water, it makes me ill. Literally. The chlorine they add does it to me every time. I'll take my water every day of the week.

Oh, and to the guy that said this is stranger than milk, if you knew the difference between raw milk and homogenized, pasteurized milk, you'd understand better. But I've said for a while. Cow's milk was designed for baby cows, not adult humans. Still, it's good in my coffee.

Anyone care to explain to me why it appears to be affluent and "educated" people in the population that tend to be part of the demographic of idiots that latch on to these stupid alternative trends, like this hot garbage or not vaccinating? Like seriously, I don't understand.

We all have an expiration date. Don't waste your precious time drinking raw water when you could be drinking scotch.

People who are convinced that their body needs something strange and unconventional to unlock their inner-body's hidden awesomeness fail to appreciate how amazing it is that the body can run on Diet Coke and cheesey-poofs. I mean really, your body is already miraculous, you ungrateful poop-swilling hipster douche bag, shit-can the sandals and buy some comfortable shoes. My vitamin-grazing aunt gave me a book on the wondrous powers of injecting hydrogen peroxide. I only kept the book in case I'm called to testify in court.

Here's the Wiki entry for Eben Byers.

I guess it's time for the wealthy to get reacquainted with giardia

You only get giardia if you drink untreated surface water, mostly from lakes where geese like to land. Most deep well water is cleaner and safer than any treated public water, especially if it comes from a lake or river.

I work as a chemist in an environmental testing laboratory and have been testing drinking water for over 25 years. I have tested the well water from my parents farm many times in those years and except for minerals it is better than any processed water we ever tested. The Calcium and Magnesium in their well water makes short work of shower heads lol, but is far more healthy than the processed water that contains Chloroform, Bromoform, Chloroaceticacid and many other disinfection by-products. We test water quarterly for these by-products from Chlorination and most systems fall just below the maximum allowed in the regulations but all systems have these contaminates. Several exceed the regulatory limits on a regular basis. It you are even 10 times those limits guess what the punishment is, you have to post a notice in the local news paper, usually in the a back page and it is about the size of a classified add, that's it. No huge fines, no shutting down the plant. Just like the Lead in Flint Michigan, if some group like the Sierra Club doesn't file a law suit, the government doesn't do a thing.

Of course I would not want to drink water from a city water system that has been taken from a lake or river, stored in a large storage tank and pumped through decades old pipes if it hasn't been sterilized by chlorination, the bugs you would get would be even worse than the Chloroform, but good clean deep well water I will drink without even thinking about it.

Unfiltered and untreated spring and well water has been safe to drink for the milleniums humans have existed. The ground water is naturally filtered.

You only need to worry about lakes, rivers etc. Not so far back in the past well water was the only source of fresh water for billions of people. Actually continues to be even today.

The Water that spent the last 1,000 years in an underground aquifer would be safe to drink raw. I grew up with well water 40+ years ago, it just has a funny taste and leaves iron rings in the tub.

Reading this thread it seems most posters are talking about untreated river water, fish poo.

I bet its tap water.

Unlike much of the generic bottle water that is just filtered tap water, this actually comes from a mountain spring. Used to be a single spring, but after they where bought by a larger company years ago, they bought the rights to other springs.

Anyone remember just maker Odwalla? They used to do unpasturized juice, that is until a 16 month girl died from E.coli.

If people want to drink unpasteurized milk or unfiltered water, let them. But giving it to small children is child abuse, just like the people feeding their newborns vegan diets.

Drink Canadian milk (the stuff your government doesn't like because of NAFTA). There is no rBST allowed in our milk.
We have rBST free milk here too, so much so it's advertised on the cartons of milk... so much Monsanto is in lawsuit mode because it doesn't want people to associate rBST with being "bad"... so if Monsanto is fighting it, it must be good!

A good quality well water doesn't even contain iron, it's completely pure. Iron contamination is only a local problem and usually can be fixed by digging a bore well (200-300 yards deep). The problem with untreated water is giardia, maembas etc. protoanimals which can cause life threatening illneses. Maembas are not a problem with drinking water unless you inhale the water through your nose. Of course that could in theory happen.

Areas with known maemba activity have to be avoided for lake / river swimming. The risk is pretty small but if it hits you, it 99,9% cases of time kills you. If you must swim in those areas, protect your nose for water intake at all costs.

Apple already has a water product:

I think most people here are confusing "dirty" and "untreated". From reading, it sounds like they are getting water from a natural spring or well. These sources can be far cleaner than normal tap water, growing up in the country, this is all we had, water was tested every so often and was already great and had zero treatment, when I first moved to the city, I could not drink tap, it tasted like pool water, and to this day, going back to my parents, it is the best tasting water I have ever had. It is not the same as drinking water from a river or stream, as a hiker that is something I would never do without boiling at least, though most people who get sick from drinking water while hiking actually don't get it from the water, but from their own hands, due to poor hygiene while on the trail. I know some people who don't filter and do extended hikes, to me that is to much of a risk to get sick while miles out somewhere, though with that said, in the years I have known them, they have never caught anything, however if I am drinking from an above ground water source I will still filter/boil mine.

Now, with that said, the claims no less pricing of this water is just stupid, it's not going to cure anything and the price is just insane. Like others said, most country folk drink this water every day for free.

People like this as well as the people against vaccine shots should either be jailed or sent to isolated islands so they can kill themselves in peace.

I have a 280' well. My water is.. Raw. It tastes better. I cannot drink city water, it it's just awful. I should mention I'm on an aquifer and have very soft water. No mineral rings in tubs or anything like that. I'll be glad to sell this water when this far starts for $10/gal to suckers.

great, now the price of ass-wipe will skyrocket.....
i grew up on a rural farm with only natural unfiltered water from a well and never had any issues with it. the immune system is like a muscle, use it or loose it. that said, i would never buy this garbage.

Yuck yuck yuck, we still talking about drinking sewer water or whatever is in the retention pond behind your house? Yea? Ok then carry on [H], the asinine mockery hasnt run its course yet. I'll assume all the jokes about libruls or millennials or whatever you guys hate this month have been made.

The difference is its not labeled as "Raw water" and even when its from a well it still needs to be tested for harmful bacteria. People can still get very ill from untreated well water. I too grew up drinking well water and never had any issues, the taste in itself is better.
That being said my bro lives on a farmett with well water and he had to have a UV filter installed because of the bacteria that was present. If it untreated they deserve to get whatever disease that is coming to them.

A fool and his/her money will soon be parted....

We do raw milk here in the south as well.

Did you know that pasteurized milk is way, way, way harder to digest than raw milk?

Raw milk is also way, way, way better for you than pasteurized milk.

Untreated spring water... I would drink that straight from the spring, but not after being bottled up and sitting for who knows how long. I also won't pay a stupid price for spring water.

Sources?

in what way is the risk of dying from Salmonella, E. Coli or listeria caught from raw milk, "better for you"? any marginal benefit from easier to digest raw milk is outweighed by the public health risk.

I grew up drinking "raw milk", but it was strait from the cow to our refrigerator. No way would I trust commercial bulk raw milk. Why people think throwing away all the advancements in public health and safety developed in the last 100 years is a good thing is beyond me. Oh wait, people that have always had the benefits of clean water and safe food, think its a Guberment conspiracy. never mind.

I'll occasionally drink lake water when I'm in Algonquin and there aren't any alternatives, but holy fuck it isn't my first choice.

The junk science of bored rich housewives and the silence of soyboy nerds who want to keep getting laid

Isn't is the same group of people that get brain eating amoebas from their Neti pots?

No, that happens when you do a nose rise (neti pot, or mine is a battery powered pump thing) and your water supply is tainted (ie, the problem is infected water pipes, not the nasal rinse itself). btw, rinsing with salt water really does help a lot for some people. But might be best to filter and boil the water, due to application location.

Also, several people have died from that brain eating amoeba just from swimming in a lake.

I dunno if I'd call it junk science per se, the company's claims sure, but there has been a lot of science about things like kids eating dirt as babies in a yard and having gut flora that makes their lives much better, amongst other things. Hell the absolute epidemic of allergies in kids these days seems to point in the direction of overly sanitized lives have some seriously negative impacts. Milk maids who had immunities that modern day vaccinations are build off of.

There is a big disconnect from what people are thinking here, some people think "raw water" is what comes off your roof in a rainstorm or what is in a small drainage creek by the roadside. The fact is that "raw water" from a well is filtered, it's filtered though the Earth and yes it had microbes in it because it's water but not "shit and piss". Now whether or not that actually does anything for you, is debatable, but simply knee jerking "junk science" seems a bit premature.

California is probably doing it for immigrants that are not used to having drinking water that has been treated. You know. To help them feel more at home maybe?

Between this and the HIV thing, being in the funeral home business might be lucrative.
Why, oh why didn't I become a Funeral Director? No, seriously, it was my first career choice out of HS. I volunteered, and even stuffed stiffs. I was accepted into mortuary school and everything. Then like an idiot I never went. I could have made good money when I was living in FL. And now this? I'm about to break my leg off kicking myself in the ass. It's a fact that people are just dying to do business with you when you're a Funeral Director.

This seems to be a trend of some decent arguments against the overprotection principle crippling potential evolution and just being plain stupid. Consistently trying to protect everyone from everything does weaken our immune systems over time as they forget how to protect against some fairly basic problems. Not to mention too often there has been a rush to "purify" things using chemicals that had not been fully tested for their side effects and long term issues. But simply deciding to forego all protections is also ridiculous. Like most other things recently (politics, economics, etc) it seems certain people are lacking middle ground. They want to lean all the way one way or the other and then a fad/trend gets created that others blindly follow.

What industry are you in now?
