Tesla Will Release a Pickup After the Model Y

Elon Musk has confirmed on twitter that Tesla will be releasing a pickup truck right after the Model Y debuts. Of course this probably puts this release 3 to 4 years from now, but it's nice to know he's going to put something out for us truck owners. Also, he also states it will be F150 class or larger. Depending on the range and cargo capacity this might actually put a Tesla in my garage.

I promise that we will make a pickup truck right after Model Y.
 
I hope it does better at towing than the model X’s maximum of 5k lbs. Even an f150 does 8k lbs.

Probably won’t be replacing the F250 diesel unless I can tow a trailer, a boat, or a car. Preferably all three just not at once.
 
If it gets priced in the 50k range, it would be an effective alternative to the current crop of 1/2 ton PU offerings. Hard to find one in a lot for less then 50k. Most 1/2 ton PU buyers rarely use the full carrying capacity of the truck. They just want to have leg room, sit high and be able to haul home their new 70" TV and recline-omatic vibro massage sofa while pretending they are a big rig trucker.
 
I hope that isn't the design for it. Also wonder if it'll be body on frame design or if it'll be a unibody.
 
Considering how many Truck users care about Torque, I think they are going to be won over once they see how much an electric engine can provide ;)

It's going to weight twice as much as an F250, have half the range, 1/10 the cargo capacity and only be able to move 10,000 lbs about 1000 yards before the batteries are dead.

All that torque will be useless without range and capacity.

I like the idea of the Tesla semi, I like the idea of the Tesla truck, but between those two I keep wondering why Tesla doesn't make the one thing that would be in high demand, with high visibility, and with great potential to bundle their solar and power wall business - a Tesla school bus.

Think about how a school bus is used (early morning, late afternoon, moderate speed stop-and-go, never more than three hours). It's almost ideal for the strengths (and weaknesses) of Tesla's vehicle platform. Google 'electricity for schools', the whole thing screams bundle with solar.
 
IF it has a good range and can carry the same capacity of a F150 its worth my time to research.....

Until Tesla solves both their production problems (costs) and the cobalt shortage this may turn into a ponzi scheme to entice investors to keep Tesla afloat...

Not really if you think about the average truck buyer. A pickup or truck based SUV is actually a great all around vehicle except for gas mileage. It's not designed for or normally bought by big city people.

I feel like Tesla needs to slow down a bit and grow what they have before launching models galore.

I mean, the Model S is 5.5 years old Bow and had O'boy received a facelift in that time. In the premium car market that doesn't fly anymore. They need a new Model S replacement before they need either a Model Y or a Pickup...

That and they still suffer from quality fit and finish issued, and have Model 3 production that is WAY behind schedule.

Slow down and get shit right before overexpanding!

You ever driven a truck? Worlds better than a car outside of a smooth ride and handling. Just more comfortable and more versatile. I like my car, but I love my truck.

Plus it’s great for hauling around my dune buggies or pulling trailers with various contents.

Yes. A lot. And for a long time. I used to operate a farm.

But it's big. And chugs gas like it. And everything else related to it is also very expensive.

And that is ok... if you're actually using the whole thing for its intended purpose. That's not what I witness most of the time. Not my money, not my problem, but I do think it is retarded, as in "personally I would not do it".

I met my fair share of "tow a few pieces of wood once a year, OMG THAT WOULD TOTALLY KILL A CAR, MUST GET A TRUCK" when I worked at a dealership. Again, their money, but I am out.

You know what car fetish the rest of the world has that we find retarded?

Under powered and unsafe tiny cars. I'm talking the smallest of the small (e.g. Smart FourTwo, Fiat 500, etc), cars so small we normally don't allow them off the golf courses or go-kart tracks.:D The few that make it to the USA become speed bumps since they are too small to see and because they don't have enough horsepower to safely pass the multitudes of 40 ton semi trucks on our highways. :p

Ya, I exaggerated just a little. But it is frightening when your average 4 door Honda has 3 times the HP of one of these sub-compact shit boxes that can barely accelerate fast enough to merge safely onto the highway with 40 ton monsters.

Not really a fetish as much as a necessity. Most countries just can not afford a truck's thirst. Where I come from, a 2.0 I4 engine is OMG HORSEPOWER! MUST DRINK LIKE A SAILOR! And that's reality for most of the world. You guys are lucky, and that's fine. But I still can't wrap my head around it.

About being a speed bump, well, part of operating any vehicle on public roads is knowing its limitations... and your surroundings.

I know. I'm exaggerating just a little. ;) The reality in the USA is big rigs are EVERYWHERE. Tiny cars are a nuissance, and everyone's an asshole driver. I'd rather deal with the asshole in the pickup truck that everyone can see rather than the asshole in the glorified golf cart that no one can see. :p

Thats why the only car that makes sense is a high powered midsize sedan.

I want anything bigger taller or smaller off my goddamned roads :p

..and here I am wanting to make it mandatory for everyone to learn how to ride a motorcycle. I'm adamant that it makes people pay more attention to their surroundings - or sorts out the problem in another way...

Lets see its after the Y, and the 3 has just been barely made. The y hasn't been shown yet, and tesla has a semi to still make. The semi has a date but still has to be made. So what like 5-10 years away for this pickup? yawn.
 
im still waiting to see some, maybe aftermarket?, device that allows the electric car/truck to make the same noise as a V8 when hitting the gas.

I mean just how awesome would it be to pull up to a stop sign and all people hear is the low rumble of a high end V8 muscle car, then look over to find it and instead see you in your prius??

We have them and buy them here because we use them. We haul people and things constantly. It's not a fad. It's a tool for convenience and to support being self sufficient.
 
If you are complaining small cars should not be allowed because you cannot see them, then you should not be driving anything, much less a truck.

I'll hold off on my opinion of the Tesla truck until I see a real one.

I just purchased a new 2017 Chevy Colorado "Mid-size" pickup, gotta love year end sales, got it for $7K off sticker at $34K. it's roughly the same size as my old 2004 Toyota Tundra full size. Trucks have gotten way to big for the average user, I use my pickup for a lot of things, but damn, I sure don't need one as large as the new "full size" monsters, I am 6' 4 " tall and I have plenty of room in the "small" pickup. and it will tow 7,000 lbs. more than enough for me.
You can get a decent pickup "on the cheap" as long as you are not wanting all the bells and whistles, a basic 2017 Colorado Work truck was around $20K at that same dealer. Add crew cab, 4x4, tow package, Bose sound system, running boards, spray in bed liner, heated leather seats etc etc, and I payed a lot more. The 1/2 ton Silverado work trucks were selling for $26K. you can get a good solid truck for a lot less than 50K these days. on the other hand, the fully loaded Full size 2018 trucks were going for $60K plus. heck no.

Properly equipped F150 can do 12k, as can the Silverado, Titan, etc.....
 
Actually you can take the F150 to 13.2K towing capacity, with the correct options from the factory.
