Edge vs: Chrome

I opened Edge so I could download Chrome and I couldn't access any of the main download sites for chrome.
I got a message that Edge is the better browser on top of the search instead.
So I had to resort to a saved copy on another drive.
 
Just got a 15" Surface Book 2 512GB the other day and have been going through the routine of installing stuff on a new machine. I actually use voice with Cortana and I download and install a lot of stuff by just asking Cortana to download it. "Hey Cortana, download Chrome". Brings up the web site to install in the Cortana search results, click that link, click download, go through the install, done. I use Edge as the default but have Chrome and FF installed as well. With FF Cortana took me to a Bing results page highlighting Edge at the top but there's a Download button just below those results, download, install and done. On latest build of Fall Creators Update.
 
Reset Edge then because it is a local problem on your computer. Just as a heads up, I just gave it a try and was able to do it.
 
It could of been a problem on my end but I just installed the O.S fresh Windows CU fall and the download links were not working.

Ah crap, this could also be another bug in the FCU when doing a clean installation. :( I enjoy using Windows 10 and for the most part, it was at least trouble free, right up until the FCU. The FCU is the worst release they have done, as far as known issues go.

Edit: I have not ever installed Chrome straight up with Edge on an FCU clean install, I usually just install it through the Adobe Reader installer.
 
Could it be a Bing 'issue' as opposed to specifically an Edge issue?

Every time Edge makes itself useful as a conduit to download Chrome I always go to: www.google.com and download Chrome from there as I can't stand the layout of Bing's search results.

I doubt in the US anyway. Type "chrome" into a Bing search web page, you'll get Edge promotions at the top but right below them are links to download and install Chrome that work perfectly.

I honestly don't think there's anything in it, I've never encountered this issue before.
 
Just used Edge and went to bing.com and searched Chrome, Firefox, Opera, etc. I did see ads that say "Edge is better", or whatever, but I was able to download the installers.

LOL you actually use the voice commands. You're truly an exception to the rule in all ways.

You do know that by using bing.com you get perhaps 1% of the search results Google provides and that doesn't even mean those would be the best 1%? :D

9 out of the 10 times I've tried Bing it hasn't found what I actually tried to search for vs. Google hitting the spot immediately.

We'll argue back and forth about this and that but it's pretty obvious the future of computing isn't going to be about people typing commands into systems. That's just the truth.

Stuffed of I am ever talking to my PC. I couldn't think of a more idiotic thing to do.

Sorry Heatlesssun, the fact you like talking to your PC doesn't instantly make it the future. Talking to 'Mother' on a starship is cool, talking to your PC is not so cool.
 
I don't use edge
Last Microsoft Browser I used was IE 11 it was good
I used Chrome but then I stopped
Used Opera for awhile
But now I am mostly using Firefox
Sometimes I will change it up though
I miss Netscape just for the logo was cool

The last time I used IE was IE 10.
I used Firefox for years until I realized Chrome was so much faster.
I used Chrome up until recently.
FF Quantum is the shit, it's all I use now.

I actually used to like the early IE logo with the spinning globe of the earth, or whatever it was....

Use whatever service you want but, if you are going to spread FUD, I am going to call it out. Oh, and Bulletdust, what part of "it" was it referring to in the quote you did of me? After all, you are famous for taking things out of context.

Edit: Damn, I bought into the derailing 2 folks always do, should have seen that coming by now. :D

Voice interaction with computers has been a Holy Grail of computer science for decades. There are countless episodes of Star Trek alone spanning back over half a century that had an extremely accurate vision of natural human interaction and machine intelligence. Whatever the implications or personal views, the engineering efforts in the development of these things is exploding now. We now have accurate voice recognition in devices of all shape, size and function can be connected across the globe to other such devices controlled be machine intelligence while leveraging an infinite database in the internet and other data sources.

All of this technology now makes voice interaction practical. Back in the early days, voice interaction on a PC was simply a local command and control demo. Now one can ask questions and get instant answers, play music, turn on the lights, order food, it's straight out of Star Trek. But you do have a point. It's not the future, it's the present.

I think you have missed the point of my post by about 100% accuracy. Delve a bit deeper. Look back at the OP and try again.

I still can't do it, I just can't. Google assistant is really good and yet I never even use that.

In time I may adjust to using it on my phone or tablet, but not on my PC - My typing skills may suck, but I still prefer a keyboard/mouse.

Different forms of input have their place, I see them complimentary not mutually exclusive. Sometimes it's just easier and more efficient to speak out a search or command while in the middle of something else but I wouldn't try to write code that way.

To us this stuff is new. Current and future generations will live their entire lives with technology that's increasingly more automated and naturally responsive, that's inevitable for better or worse.

The keyboard and mouse are going away about as fast as navigating the OS using VR and a headset with proximity sensors is going to become mainstream - Which is most likely....Not in our lifetimes. Most people struggle to work out how to stream Netflix via a Chromecast using their phone as the remote.

I've compared search results between Bing and Google for years. In the US at least I doubt 90% of users would notice the difference if the labels were changed.

Which is precisely why voice control is much better. If people struggle with physically controlling things, how much easier would it be for a person to say what they want and it happens?

Edit: The person you quoted never said one thing is going away and being replaced by another, he does not see them as mutually exclusive, and neither do I. You clearly do.

I've compared them too and Bing fails almost with 100% accuracy.

Then you are doing it wrong. It is one thing to use something and have legitimate gripes, it is another thing to straight out........

I used to have odd results on Bing, like when I would look for Lenovo ThinkPad BIOS updates and stuff, the same string "Lenovo [model] BIOS" which gave me the first result on Google as the direct link to the latest BIOS for that model, on Bing it would give other stuff. They seem to have figured that part out at least as some time ago it started giving me the expected links.

To get back to Edge, the only major gripe I have is how goofy it is to programmatically change the default browser. It used to be something one could do with the registry, but they apparently didn't want something auto-changing it without a user's knowledge (if that was ever a thing?) so they have a checksum they do and if the registry entry is changed directly, they reset the default back to Edge. There are only two ways to change the default browser: either the user does it through the GUI, OR they have an option to import a full set of system-wide associations. Of course this will overwrite EVERY other association. ugh. At work we use an onboarding process for wifi that requires a web page to open, and that page just happens to not like Edge, and Google's own Outlook sync tool setup ALSO doesn't like Edge. So we have to walk users through changing the browser before they do those things.

Let me spell it out for you.

The OP commented that he tried to download alternate browsers with what seemed to be an out of the box install. That means using Edge and Bing.com. Using those two items I replicated his actions and found nothing blocking downloading a different browser.

Attempting to replicate a user issue is one of the most basic first steps you take when troubleshooting technology.

And yet, when the roles are reversed and I do the same thing in a fairly scientific fashion with supporting evidence under Linux I'm flat out basically called a liar, told I'm shifting the blame or told that I'm blaming the user - Even though the evidence supports otherwise?

Why are the Windows users always given a free pass in acting all righteous?

Not to mention there is no limitation that says you need to use bing when you search something with edge lol.
 
There is a issue when do fresh install of 1709 and your network card is plugged in. The Trusted Computing CPU spikes up and makes Edge act weird. I would unplug network card and do fresh install. There are other ways around it btw. Just search on Google.
 
I never really used Edge but a few days back decided to give it a go...it's actually not bad at all...very comparable to Chrome minus the extension support...I think I'm going to use Edge as my main browser now...still some UI issues and annoyances with it but overall I like it
