Fed up with the "everything must be a Destiney clone" state of gaming atm.

EA's statement that no one wants to play single player especially ticked me off. This whole move to make everything pay to play / pay to win has also got me fuming. The fuel to absolutely hate EA and everyone like them is abundant for me.

So F* it. I dug out Dragon Age Inquisition and started a fresh game. I've done Witcher 3 to death, and as much as I love the game, I need a break. Andromeda.... was another EA victim so, the fate of Mass Effect isn't helping matters.

DA:I has been refreshing. Unfortunately it also contrasts how badly games have gotten dumbed down, just in the last 3 years! And it was considered dumbed down compared to many of its predecessors. I guess it's up to CD Projekt Red to serve us old SP lovers now. Hopefully a new hero will arrive out of all this destruction to all things gaming to help save the day. AND equally hopefully EA continues to shoot themselves in the foot until they have to sell their remaining Developers to somebody that actually still gives a shit.

The root of it is greed. They can't further monetize SP titles without, you know, actually putting in effort. So they just push MP-centric titles with lootbox/microtransaction bullshit.

However, as we have seen with Shadow of War, they won't stop trying to push that shit into SP titles as well.

Some games I get but what exactly is there about Destiny that is pay 2 win, and what games have been coping it because I honestly dont see many that do? If its your just against any micro transactions wether it be cosmetic or in-game useful thats cool and I respect that (I dont necessarily agree but I understand). The ONLY item you can buy with real money that isn't cosmetic is a speeder which really doesn't make much of a difference anyways. Now if we are talking SW BF2 pre-blowout than ya that was bull.

I'm not against microtransaction if they're not intrusive or pay to win. I'm not against Destiny or any other CO-OP based MP game either. What I'm against is this idea that SP is dead, there's no money to be made in it, and any SP to be made from now on should be minimal and tacked on to the MP (EA's position).

I want the full gamut of games, games that are still made by gamers, for gamers. I don't want a market saturated with Destiny clones, with maybe a Battlefront II style SP tagging along. It would be nice if CDPR & Bethesda weren't the only Producers doing it either.

Not saying I don't see what you're saying, but I've played more great SP games this year than in recent years.

There are still a few good games, but the majority is not SP, or only has a tacked on placeholder level SP mode. The trend is not encouraging.

The problem is not whether money can be made on it. That's not up for debate. The problem is that investors want their doe where the most money can be made. So if MP lootbox microtransaction garbage offers more lucrative returns on paper that's where they'll put their money. (And of course they'll fail, because the market cannot support too many such games) Good SP campaigns are always marketable. But you can't have 15 grindy mp pvp game at the same time, because they'll siphon the playerbase from each other.

Quite true, although i feel the trend has actually turned a corner and is going back to games designed with a purpose. However, I'm likely biased because I lean more towards traditional RPGs or games like TLoU.

I can't accurately gauge what it's like in the FPS shooter realm, which is probably still a swamp. Ironically that was why i stayed away from FPSes back in the old days too. They rarely had a story other than "shoot the things you see." Pretty much right up until the era of HL and RTCW from my standpoint.

I like Destiny and I haven't spent a dime on anything beyond the core games and expansions - what are some clones I should be on the lookout for?

I've been a gamer since... well since there was electronic gaming. I was fortunate to experience all the greats in their prime: X-Wing, Half-Life, Portal, Deus Ex, Unreal Tournament, Mass Effect... etc. I love SP, MP, CO-OP; they are all good genres.

My frustration is the news lately is full of Producers saying they are going to "focus on MP going forward". Activision was already there, then it was EA, now Eidoes. After EA closed Visceral, said players dont want SP, upped their push to shoe horn microtransactions into everything, and threw all their cards into Anthem (and I hope it's great), a switch went off in my head. All the franchises I want to see more of are getting shelved, or development plagued with ulterior motives. I'm just fucking done with EA in particular. They don't care about their Dev houses, don't care about the games themselves (apart from what they can hype) and they sure as hell don't care about their customers. They have always been shady, but now they are just getting evil.

People keep making statements like this and I don't get it (I kind of do to some degree), if they are so evil and crap and whatnot, how come they still sell games? They should be bankrupt by now. You can't keep a company going by extorting customers, you will fail, and rather sooner then later.

Also there are a bunch of singleplayer games doing really really well and as such I don't worry too much that they will dissapear anytime soon. There is a market for a lot of things, but like very other genre the destiny, pubg and such have a limited audience, same as back in the day with world of warcraft, everyone and his mother made an MMO, how many of those still have a big playerbase? Most of them went ftp within a year.

The company who makes the game that get's the player and can keep them, will win, the rest will move on tho other games/genres where they can make money iso loosing.

Their biggest problem, is the conclusion they draw. When one of their titles doesn't do as good as they hoped, they always say "gamers are not interested" instead of "where did we go wrong"? Like there being no interest in a story driven RPG was ever a thing.

They sell games because lowest common denominator is low, and it sells best.

If you are an old gamer who lived through the glory of an emerging industry there is a lot of "things are shit now, compared to before", and that's true, but it is also the regular effect of a maturing industry.

Luckily we have an alternative today, and those are indie games. I think I did not buy an EA game for a decade, or about, but they don't care, neither do I, but I have only one wallet to vote with and they still have millions of customers, so their decision to ignore older more demanding gamers is the correct one from business point of view.

All these gaming companies are more focused on how they can make the most money by spending the least amount of resources possible. They simply don't give a shit about putting out a good product anymore, even though this could be the road to even more profitability for them. This is in direct correlation with many corporations these days that do the same thing.

This. Exceptionally well put, thank you.

It's not like I hate anything that isn't SP, SP is just what I enjoy playing most right now and the current forecast for it is dismal. There are some great SP games out right now, but we will not be able to say that as readily in the next 2-5 yrs as this trend digs in. The Division was / is fun. Anthem looks like it could have some potential. Borderlands 3 is undoubtedly on the way. Wonderful. I just don't want this to be 90% of what we have to choose from come this time next year. I don't want to have to pin all my hopes on Cyberpunk or Metro Exodus because high hopes + only option makes for disappointment and loads a negative fan feedback that has destroyed franchises in the past. I am not saying I'm merely frustrated with where game development is today. I'm saying the markers are all pointing one way, and if too many Publishers jump on that train, the landscape is all going to look the same before long. ...well that and EA can take a flying leap into an unstable mass effect relay.

Wallstreet took over the gaming industry just like the others. When EA bought up the small developers they were pretty much about controlling the industry and all the studios we used to love. They're just throwing shit at a wall now and seeing what sticks. If you really want to put your money somewhere it should probably be into Indie titles and a few early access titles and hope they grow. That's the only place you'll get new ideas or interesting takes on old ones. Some of them have great concepts and get figured out over time with small dev teams that build the game as they go. I used to be so against it but the classic model of gaming has changed to a big budget like movie studio cranking out a movie year after year.

Well I actually hate everything that is not SP. Or rather I don't care for them at all. I gave a chance to division, but it's at the level of some free to play titles I played. And they lied to me, the description on uplay said it is single player as well as multiplayer, but there is no single player in it, you're trust into a persistent online world without the ability to lock out others. There is no private session, and there will be no game after they decide to kill the servers. So I felt cheated. I even asked for a refund but they refuse to answer.

Look to the bright side. There are more titles now than ever before in gaming history.

Yes, there are a lot of cynical loot box, pay 2 win, micro transaction garbage games out there, but there are companies actively putting out great titles and aschewing corporate greed.

Turn based strategy RPGs are coming back. Wolfenstein just dropped. And console gaming is better than ever before thanks to the large amount of RPGs and single player adventure games getting pumped out.

There is stuff out there. Just have to stay away from EA, Activison, and Ubisoft.

I am surprise that lot held on until Destiny.

I was already fed up when it was at "everything must be a CoD MW clone", and SP in fps were almost none-existent from that point onwards.

That's why I haven't even touched either EA's battlefronts or any of the latest BF's from them. The On the house copy of BF3 convinced me that SP in these kind of shooters are completely dead. This was way BEFORE the whole MT crap.

They don't care how much money they already made. They don't care how much you spent for a game.

All they care about is how much money per hour they get from you playing.

They'd force all their titles to be pay-by-the-hour if they could get away with it.

They saw Oblivion and Skyrim for $50 or $60, and people putting hundreds of hours into it. AAA publisher felt ripped off you got so much out it.

So they only way to monetize the time you play is with multiplayer season packs and microtransactions.

And I thought everything was going to be a pubg clone XD.

Honestly there are some remarkable games that came out on console in 2017 that deliver remarkable single player experiences. We also got Senuas Sacrifice this year that delivered a unique, solid experience with great graphics for a studio of that size.

I've tried to play Mass Effect Andromeda 3 times now and couldn't stomach the dialogue, or game any longer. Unlikely to ever finish it now.

It sounds like you are into rpg's so here are a few that I put hundreds of hours into combined this year that I really enjoyed:

Tales of Berseria - Great voice acting, interesting story, decent jrpg combat, and a fantastic main character performance.
Zelda - Breath of the wild. What needs to be said? It's a fantastic game, and one of the more polished products you're going to see in videogaming. I played it first on Cemu at 4k, and now I'm working through it with my son that got it for Xmas with his switch.
World of Final Fantasy - a charming albeit easy jrpg pokemon clone that soaked up 40 hours.
Senua - Hellblade: Straight forward story/puzzle game with some satisfying if basic combat. Not long, but definitely an experience not to be missed.
