And please tell me how happy/unhappy you are with your system.

I am finally at the point where I need to decide if I am sinking money into a new TR system (or not).

All the PCIE lanes and some nice fast storage sounds nice to me.

I would be happy with one had I purchased one, no doubt about it. :) I am on a Ryzen 1700X and 1700 so I cannot see myself buying an HEDT setup, even though I want one. :) Elf_Boy, I think you missed the boat because the prices for a TR setup was on sale for a while, no idea when that will occur again.

When it was on sale I was not funded.

Usage wise, my 1800x does just fine.

I just want a really nice system that will last me a long while as a second system even when it isnt the best-ish anymore.

If you go TR, go for the 16 core. It's only been in the last year or two that I've considered replacing my 7 year old and 4 year old 12 core Mac workstations. For highly threaded workloads core count is king. And the amount of PCI-E lanes available in TR systems allow full access to multiple GPUs or storage components for extra longevity.

l have been really happy with my TR setup. Just research your parts!!
I went with Asrock x399 tachi board 32 gigs of 3200 gskill cas 14 memory
and a 1920x. Chip runs great. Times i wish i had gotten the 1950 when
i am doing heavy core stuff. Really for my use the 12 core is fine.

The only knock on the platform i had been the cooling. U get some confusion
over the cpu tctl reading and the tdie reading. By confusion i mean which is the
most important. The tctl has a 27 degree offset. So it can lead u to believe your system
is running hot. When its not.

SO my advice don't skimp on your cooling setup. In the chips defense i am mining with it
so its running pretty hard 24/7. Currently got it set at 4.075 at 1.3ish volts through the asrock tuning program.
Right now its showing a tctl of 68.3 and a tdie of u guessed it 41.3 :)

I just got myself a 1700 system for xmas i wanted a TR system but the budget is not for it.

My user case is heavy brute force data compression that scales exceptionable well with cores.

In the process of gathering parts for my 1920x build, hope fully by the end of January it will be complete, I wasn't going to upgrade until march but the black friday price cuts made it impossible to say no - £120 off the cpu! RAM prices are killing it though, every time I look the price of a 32GB kit has gone up. Here's hoping for January sale prices on some of the bits.

Love the TR platform. It's just amazingly fast with anything that is well threaded. It's also really good with games even while you let something go in the background. I have queued up a few videos to encode while playing a game with no noticeable performance decrease and only a slightly slower encoding speed than it going alone since games are mainly GPU bound. :)

I've switched from 16 core to Skylake X 8 core.

I couldn't justify that many cores. It was rediculous hah. I let someone else who could make better use of it have at it. If you like or need lots of yummy cores then Threadripper 1950x is delicious indeed.

hmm from your rig list it looks like u dont need TR
so my advice is to buy zen+ in march 2018 if they go highier in OC
i got 1920x but i bought it before lower prices so i lost around 100-150e on my setup .

If that's directed at me & my rigs then all but the top one run folding@home - although that list does need updating again. My daily driver is the dual x5670 rig so its time for some shiny new toys:)

Overall happy - although the memory issues are unacceptable. (Trying to find compatible RAM for the capacity you want) - this is 2017, if the memory is on the QVL list it should just work, but often it doesn't.
I use mine for Virtualization and some cryptocurrency mining currently.

Intels offering are more mature, but bang for buck for sure still lies with AMD.

TR CPU:good - minus the RAM compatibility issues. Good solid overclock on low voltage.
Chipset: good - but only being able to use chipset RAID in Windows 10 is sweaty donkey balls. WTF? OS Raid works fine.
Zenith Extreme mobo: mediocre - given how much it costs its been very, very flaky for me
AMD Ryzen Master overclock tool is a POS.

Overall performance/Dollar ratio: fantastic!!! Once setup right its very stable.

It's been fun, got lucky and got a pretty much brand new Zenith Extreme for half price (Microcenter return), got a used kit of ram (Corsair 4X4 PC2600) for $85. Two Plextor 500Gb NVME's for $200 each and the 1950x for $800. Machine is a beast and super stable with the latest driver updates. Have to 2 vega 64's connected and my 1000 watt seasonic titanium barely keeps everything on :). Tell you what. I live in Chicago and I don't have to turn my heat on. The system generates enough heat to keep my bedroom toasty.

What AIO coolers would people recommend?

From what I've read the CPU block needs to be done very just right.

I have the 1950x and the Gigabyte board from when newegg had it on sale a bit ago. I have 32 GB of Gskill RGB 3600, I reused my Corsair AIO and that is works fine.
Paired with a XFX 480. I was going to go with the Intel 8700K but, it was not available.
It's in the massive thermaltake view 71 case. This thing is a monster!

Works like a champ. The only thing I find myself doing with it that would even begin to cause it to slow down is to encode some DVD's. I have some VM's running as well.
In my case I wanted it but I don't need it . My previous intel 6700K still works and runs fine. I kind of regret it but hey now I have it.
I really could have saved like 1500 bucks and just kept my previous machine.

I had 1950x for a lil bit but had some mb issues and returned it. Since then I'd had to go back to my Skylake setup at 4.8ghz. It's been a month or so and I really freaking miss the 1950x. I get so fucking sick of running out of cores with this teeny 6700K. I can run one instance of Mediacoder and then my rig is tapped. Even browsing is painfully slow. 4c/8t even at 4.8ghz is just not enough headroom to do any serious multitasking. With the 1950x, I had to throw more and more things at it to make it sluggish. Hmm, MC has the 1950x back down to 700...

Argh i wish the other places with match Microcenter on the threadripper price

I don't know how they do it, i just picked up a 1920x for $499. They also do a $30 discount if you buy a mobo at the same time.

Glad someone is getting to take advantage of the prices !! Way to far to drive for me. Be at least 1k miles round trip

They sell the cpus as loss leaders and always up sell using the items required to go with said loss leaders.

I was at microcenter the other day and nearly picked up the X399 Taichi and a 1950X. I have literally zero workload that would require that, hell I don't even tap out my 4770k but I just want it for some reason.

cough distributed computing sub forum cough ;) that's reason enough, lol.
