Netflix Is Not Going to Kill Piracy, Research Suggests

If you want to stop piracy then instead of streaming video -- offer MP4 downloads of the content. That way customers can watch the content when they want without having to worry about Internet access. Customers also don't want to be saddled with DRM restrictions and forced commercials when they are paying for content. The product that the pirates are offering is superior to what Netflix is offering. If I could pay a Netflix price for a safe marketplace that contains the same product that the pirates offer -- I'd do it. The content creators will never go along with that though so would rather saddle their customers with an inferior offering than that of the pirates and then complain about piracy.

Its all or nothing it pirates, ever hear of compromise? Because things like iTunes lets you down load stuff. Except the price is much higher the what pirates offer.

A person that will never pay, and never has is not a costumer. You have the option of buying content but are to cheap to pay for it, so you pirate. Which means the value you place on that content is close to 0. Why should a company listen to anyone that places that little value on their product?

Oh because if it was a dollar you'd buy it? If they can get 10 people to pay 10 bucks for content, or 50 that pay a 1, which would they rather have?

Your not only cheap, your also impatient, the longer you wait, the cheaper things like movies tend to get, but you want instant content for a price close to zero. Most/all top tier media companies are not going to give you that.

What a gross, misguided generalization!

Once again, I'm not going to stop with this - Anyone who pirates does not see value in the content being offered, this is the case for anyone illegaly downloading media as well as buying copies of Windows 10 of the [H] forums for $40.00. If the consumer does not see value in the pricing and accessibility of a product than as a business you have to change your marketing strategy to suit the consumer - It is not the other way around and you are not entitled to throw copyright laws around in a way they were never designed to be used nor are you entitled to lobby the governments of the world to treat lost customers as criminals simply because you like your greed fueled and outdated business practices.

Being the extreme right wing capitalist you are, you like to manipulate the argument in favor of corporations - How about those corporations start paying taxes in the markets they retail in? That way consumers have more disposable income to pay the overinflated prices and manipulative package bundling used by the content creators to bleed the consumer dry and everyone wins.

It's not rocket science, the middle/working class that buy these products are being bled dry in taxes and cost of living expenses as a result of privatization and it's the middle/working class that buy these products. When corporations steal from the public by refusing to pay taxes and give back to the economy someone has to foot the bill meaning there's less money floating around to justify unnecessary purchases.

You can cry foul all you like over people obtaining 'data' by questionable means, the fact is you've got no hope at holding back the ocean - The best you can do is to try and entice these customers back by offering something realistically priced and accessible without the issues of DRM.

Even iTunes fails in this regard. Considering most albums these days have ~14 tracks and iTunes charges ~$1.50 per track, that's $21.00 for an album while using your download quota to obtain the media without the content creator supplying a physical disc! From the point of view as a consumer that used to buy media on physical disc that's hardly value for money.

Right wing capitalist thinking is as flawed as communism and daily expenses are reaching the point where it's simply too expensive to 'live' - Yet corporations seem to think that increasing prices and making content harder to obtain is a sure fire way to increase sales! The logic is mind bogglingly retarded!

And the diversions continue. We all get it. You don't want to pay for content, any one making movies, games etc, is an evil greedy bastard that does not deserve money. You do know that iTunes charges less if you by a full album, I thought you wanted choices, you can buy a single song, or a full album.

But no matter what happens you will defend your piracy to the bitter end. Why? Because you don't care that you took the labor of others. You created this boogie man of 'corporations' and no matter what they do they are evil. You claim they steal from the middle class, what are you doing when you pirate? Do you really believe the only people working at big corp are CEOs? Its amazing you even bought a TV after all those are made by Big Evil Corp stealing money from all the slaves that work for them.

Most people are enticed by the product and prices, which is why they pay for them. Without all those people leeches like you wouldn't have any movies, games, etc to pirate. Those products exist because evil corp paid to make them, and most actual consumers PAID for them.

Your starting to sound like a welfare queen / commie. Every should get everything for free, everyone should get the same check, etc etc. Makes me wonder if your nothing but a welfare mooch, everyone else should work so that you can buy your big tv, and pirate movies. Because without those pirated movies your life would end. Such a sad life.

I never stated I don't want to pay for content and I never stated anyone should get anything for free, furthermore I never stated that I don't care about the labor of others - If you're going to try and form an argument as thin as rice paper you've gotta start actually reading posts.

Your capitalist opinion is what's killing western society, the prices asked for such products are not reflective of real world situations and the limitations artificially placed on such products are driving potential consumers away.

You still haven't answered my question. How long have you worked in the industry?

How long have you gotten welfare checks?

Your right you never stated anyone should get anything for free.
You stated that you just take things for free because you don't like the prices companies ask for. Because business should ask BulletDust how much stuff should cost so that he might buy it. Odds are if prices were lower, you'd come up with a different reason for pirating.

BulletDust, " This is Porsche, we are going to release a new super car, price 1 million dollars what do you think?"
BulletDust "You are evil and greedy fuckers, we consumers don't want to pay that much"
Porsche "500k ?"
BulletDust "No I will pirate your car you greedy fucks"
Porsche : "whats a fair price"
BulletDust "fifty cent" -
Porsche "...."

I've got my own business my friend.

The issue with your above post is:

There are people that can see value in a Porsche, especially those content creators you're so keen on defending.

There aren't many working class people that see value in getting ripped paying for pay TV packages deliberately structured to be as expensive as possible just to view Game Of Thrones and there aren't many working class people that see value in a $40.00 Bluray.

Once again, in the real world people need to be able to justify their purchases and its no good as a content creator hiding under the skirt of the government while holding the copyright Act like a shield of honour of which it was never designed just so you can prop up your outdated business model.

It's clear you work for the industry.

Well where do you think that money came from?
That's your complete response? Then why do I even bother trying to argue if you'll just ignore everything you find uncomfortable.
As to answer your question: From the profits of previous movies they made, mostly ticket sales. Streaming and off the shelf sales is not where they seek return of investment (except for DTV titles) It's just an icing on the cake for them.

And it's not my responsibility to make their movie profitable, they have to meet market demands with their distribution model and prices to make it profitable, if they can't it's not my fault. I won't subscribe to a streaming service out of charity if I feel the content or the quality is lacking.

if you cant see the deference between lending something already paid for, where a single copy is passed around, vs copying content over and over, and I cant help you.
If the content has a copyright notice that states "including lending" or just "lending" then it's illegal. That's going to vary depending on your location, but it's obvious the movie studios don't want you sharing anything you paid for.

I think that the death of Blockbuster has made things a lot harder. Sure, Redbox has new movies cheaply, but it’s very limited and streaming rentals are generally pretty expensive, both on the high and low end.
Stuff like Netflix is ok if you just want to watch “a movie.” When I’ve been looking for something specific, they haven’t had it probably 90% of the time.

I'm actually not defending the content creators. My issue is with self righteous, entitled pirates like you. People that decided on their own whats right and wrong, and then use that as justification for taking others work.

If you don't see value in cable packaged: DONT BUY CABLE.

If you don't see value in a Blu-ray. DONT BUY THE Blu-ray.

Reality is, there are people that see value in those items and pay for them. Because some people pay for blu-rays, cable, movies etc, those products exist..

If everyone was a pirate like you, would GOT exist?

But you want it all, you want GOT, you just don't want to pay what the people that created GOT want you to pay for it.

I wish I knew what your business was, so that I could steal what you do, just to teach you a lesson. But I doubt you own a business, unless that's welfare check collection.

Netflix still has Blu-ray/dvd shipping.

Its all dependent on local copyright laws. Pirates hate copyright, but generally speaking having copyright is better then not. How many movies or shows would get created without those creators having the ability to protect their work? If everyone was able to freely copy and distribute the work of others, who would work in that industry?

Netflix still has Blu-ray/dvd shipping.
Which is also inconvenient. If I want to watch a movie, it’s because it fits into my schedule now, not 5 days (or, from a recent experience with GameFly, 20 days) from now.

Arghhh! I am not a 'pirate', I already stated I was talking in a fairly general sense and you struggle to read, in fact your whole reply highlights exactly what I'm saying!

It's completely irrelevant if I download content illegally or not. If I don't see value in the content creators offerings or sales methods as well as the artificial limitations imposed on such sales and, as you so elegantly put it, Don't buy a shockingly structured pay TV package or don't buy the Bluray, I'm a lost customer! Piracy or not, lost customer = Lost revenue. At least if someone goes to the trouble of pirating content they're becoming drawn into it and are more inclined to pay for it assuming it ever becomes available in a legal, convenient and affordable manner.

The idea of business is to do everything you can to draw the customers in, not to push them away while clinging onto a sales method that worked in the 80s. Therefore, if (arghh!) pirates exist it's the fault of the content creators you defend in every thread related to the topic.

As far as my business is concerned, I make great money doing better work and undercutting my competitors hellbent on charging the earth for a service - You see, with the heightened level of greed in society, the more people charge above CPI the easier it is to undercut them and still make great money. That's called marketing your product and it's what the content creators as well as the media empires peddling their products need to understand. Netflix was close to getting it, but the geoblocking forced onto them by the content creators screwed a great business model.

Once again: Please tell me why I can't watch the X-Files from the 80s unless I'm a US Netflix subscriber?

Availability, simplicity and affordability inline with CPI and inflation in a central location (no good subscribing to half a dozen different services riddled with buggy DRM) is all consumers ask for, and yet that appears to be too difficult for content creators to manage - What you're arrogantly and stupidly proposing is more harmful to content creators than piracy!

so pay more for a digital rental. you pirates all sound like spoiled babies. I want it now, and I want it free.

I want it now, and I want it at a realistic price in line with CPI.

Which is generally what consumers demand with any purchase....

The spoilt brats are the content creators making things as difficult as possible in order to cling onto a business model that's about 25 years past it's use by date.

Thank Gawd you don't work in marketing eh?

Spoiled brat calls others spoiled. Pirate calls others greedy. oh the irony.

CPI huh? in 1987 a copy of Top Gun on VHS was for sale for about $27. Which in todays money is about $57 today. Sure lets go with CPI costs for movies.

Really?!

The market dictates the terms, the retailer markets their product in line with those terms. Besides, I could say the sky's blue and you'd say it's pink simply because you have an issue with me. Don't worry, the feeling's mutual.

Bearing in mind that most didn't have VCR's in the 80's so it was more an issue of supply vs demand as opposed to anything to do with CPI. However, once again you're proving that the entertainment industry just cannot let go of an outdated business model and your very link specifically states that consumers were not interested in buying media at those prices.

Furthermore, it's literally impossible for the consumer to be greedy - Greed is selling a service or product for overinflated prices and trying to force those prices and limitations onto the consumer by manipulating governments and copyright acts - Once again, such tactics push potential consumers away meaning that at the end of the day it's irrelevant as to whether they pirate or not.

Netflix had a great business model, the entertainment industry stuffed it with unnessecary geoblocking.

And [sigh] once again, stop assuming I'm in any way pirating anything - You've really gotta start reading posts.

Anyone can be greedy.. The dictionary doesn't say anything about only being sellers ;).
