Worth upgrading to GTX 1080 Ti?

I currently have the GTX 1080 G1 Gaming with it reasonable overclocked.

There are some good deals on with the GTX 1080 Ti Asus ROG Strix. Just wondering is it worth going for it?
Will an overclocked 1080 Ti offer significantly more performance, I'm talking at least 35% than my overclocked GTX 1080?

I game at 1440p but like to dial everything to max settings and would like the minimum framerate to be at least for every AAA title 60fps in the foreseeable future.

Even at stock settings the 1080Ti will offer considerably better performance than your OC'd GTX 1080, specially an aftermarket cooled one as the Asus you are looking, also those 40% more shaders y 40% more ROPS scale way better with each bit of clock you can juice from it.. so you will be typically easily over 35% better performance than what you have today.

I'm in the same boat, a colleague made me a really good offer on my 1080 so I'm making the jump.
If you can sell what you have for a decent chunk I'd say go for it.
I can't decide between Gigabyte Auros or EVGA FTW3.

I just asked myself a somewhat similar question, but from a 1070 to a 1080. On a whim I was looking at NewEgg and saw that the Asus Strix GTX 1080 had a $20 rebate and came with Destiny 2 and the new Assassins Creed, both games I had pre-ordered already (cancelled 'em to save over $80). Saw Amazon had it $10 cheaper, so NE should price match, ebates has 3% cash back with NE right now and I get 2% CB through my CC. So in essence paid $430-ish for it. At least that is how I justify it to myself.

I say that the 1080ti would for sure offer a nice boost in performance. If deals are good, you want the extra fps and overhead for the best settings and you have the means to do so, go for it. Why not, right? ;)

Honestly the 1080ti is such a beast. The bottom line would be, do you want it? You should be able to sell your old card to make up for some of the cost. The 1080ti is the best performing card I have ever owned through the years and do not regret it at all. Other times I get buyers remorse, in this case I have not and every time I overclock the card I am further blown away by its performance.

I have two with zero regrets. The card is so powerful it borderlines on retardation.

I completely understand the challenge you're under. I have a 1080. I game at 4k. I don't need to upgrade, but that itch is building. I'm trying to hold out for the next gen xx80 ti, but...

On the other side, I'm not gaming that much, and it's mostly VR these days, which is all performing fine.

But I have that itch...

I would get a FTW3 if you could the white EVGA one looks good next time I'll wait around for a aftermarket cooler unless the Stock one can have lower fan decibles and look good doing so. I would do anything to banish that Geforce GTX logo even print out a logo myself.

When they added RGB colors to the cards they did away with lazer etching which in my book looked tons better. It's probally going to be a few months before we see the Volta 2000ti cards in 2018.

I'm in the same position as you right now, EVGA 1080 (was able to pick one up right when it came out) and game at 1440p with a high refresh monitor. I thought long and hard about upgrading to the Ti right when it dropped earlier this year, but couldn't bring myself to do it.

I used to be on the x70-level train through HS/College, then ponied up the money for the x80 once out, but just can't myself to upgrade again within the same gen, even for ~30+% performance increase. Yeah, I could go through the hassle/downtime to sell and repurchase, but I told myself to be content with what a have and to not chase the next best thing so soon, (pretty not-[H], I know :()

With Volta just around the corner, I feel it's in my best interest to wait it out, maybe all the way until the next Ti comes out, and then just stick with Ti cards the rest of the way.

If you can find a good deal on a 1080 Ti I think it's a worthy upgrade.

I've seen some decent sales prices on new cards and some killer prices on 2nd hand.

I'm planning on getting a TI, only because I'm going to move my non 1080 into a dedicated VR machine. But my non 1080ti plays everything at 1440 with out much fuss maxed out. Even some games I can crank to 4k and almost max out as well. If I did not have a dedicated vr machine in mind, I would wait for the 1180 or 2080 or what ever they decide to call it and pick that up when its released.

If it was me and I already owned a 1080 I would continue to wait ans save for what nvidia will come out with next... unless you had another build you want to drop the 1080 into

Put a 4k display into the mix and the retardation will sudden come down to not so retarded. nVidia's next GPU release should finally put 4K @ Ultra settings at or past 60fps. At the moment Ultra settings only run around 35 to 40 to sometimes 50fps on average ( source: Ton's of YouTube videos )

I love my 1080 ti. Had the Founders Edition at launch, waited all night to get one. $800 dollar or so in cash. Sold that system for a nice profit, then got the MSI Gaming X 1080 ti and that is one very heavy hard. Sold that system again for a nice profit. I'm currently on the EVGA Black Edition 1080 ti and love it.

I'm now at a cross road.

1080sli.. upgrade to a single 1080ti or dont?

Leaning yes while I can get a good price on them but I game at 4k.

Just talked to the wife and shockingly she's fine with it.. just can't afford 2 1080ti. If 4k in battlefield 1 is a bust at 4k I'm sorta screwed.. Though I can move down to the 27" 1440 165hz asus monitor if needed just for gaming.. Though would like to hand that to my son as I would plan to upgrade his system from the 980sli to a single 1080.

:/

Wish it was plug and play but my 1080s are water cooled and I'd like to keep the new to air cooled since it would be just the single card.

Really all i currently game with is battlefield and call if duty and maybe the future quake.. usually fps are all enables but it's not been the case recently.

Thank you all the replies guys. Reading some of the comments, I'm kind of torn between on whether to upgrade or not. I really want the 1080 Ti as I intend to keep the card for a good while if I do, but I'm afraid Nvidia is going to release their next batch of cards early next year.

What are the chances of Nvidia releasing Volta? Will it be anytime soon Feb/March or will it be late in 2018 August/September do you guys think?

I think the 1080 came out may 27th.. Though prob not in the numbers to be easily had and not without a huge mark up.

If history serves — an overclocked 1080ti might keep pace with the 1180.

Just like an overclocked 980ti basically kept pace with a 1080.

I bit the bullet and ended up getting the Asus GTX 1080 Ti ROG Strix.

Absolutely incredible cooling. Even under heavy load during gaming it only went up to 71 this is after overclocking the card which sees its core clock speed hovering consistently between 2014mhz to 2074mhz in dozens of titles I tested which includes Crysis 3, The Witcher 3, Assassins Creed Syndicate, Deux Ex Mankind Divided, Shadow of War, The Evil Within 2 Watch Dogs 2, GTA V, Rise of The Tomb Raider...etc

In terms of noise level I could barely hear the fans at all. Performance wise it’s a definite nice improvement over my previous overclocked GTX 1080 G1 Gaming.

Overall really happy with the card.

Those are some good temps for a ~250w TDP card. I tell ya, right now I use a Kraken G10+H90 mainly for quietness. If I upgraded my 980 Ti to a 1080 Ti, the Asus sounds like it's the way to go, maybe even without the water cooling

im recently got a 1080Ti and just set every game to ultra.. and dont even think twice about it.. running on a 1440p monitor.. before the Ti, i ran a 1070 and did a mix of settings.. to get the framerate i want..

I purchased a 1080ti FTW3 card from a member here on Thursday. NIB for $675. Going from a 980 SLI on 3440x1440. Card arrives tomorrow, can't wait to see how it performs.

Honestly at this point it is better to just wait for Volta. 1080 is still a beast. While a 1080 to is a huge upgrade I don't think it is worth the $200ish price tag if you sell your 1080 now with Volta less then 6 months away more then likely. I am personally waiting for Volta Ti before upgrading my 1080.

You're too late into the cycle. Don't. It's better to find another solution or wait.

You only really want to upgrade to a new video card within the first 6 months to 8 months and even 8 months is pushing it at least this is the way myself and my friends and I'm guessing many others view it.

What you could do is upgrade to another 1080 for around $500 used I'm guessing? Maybe less? SLI them. Then right before the new nVidia card drops sell them both. That should give you money to be close to what you need.

Or just suck it up and wait.

I'm in the same boat as you OP - so many people are selling off their Ti's it's very tempting to pull the trigger on it. But I got curious and started asking around and the reason everyone is selling off is to pre-empt the price drop once the Voltas / Amperes come out. Sure you might have to use a backup card for a while but it is what it is if you want to maximize the resale price.

The thing to consider is your current setup and what apps you use - if both are still OK then I'd stick with it for now.

Why not get a EVGA and step up once the Voltas/ Amperes come out?

Isn't there a time limit on the step ups from time of purchase? 90 days or something like that? Unless you know when the new cards are coming out (I sure don't) that's a gamble anyway.

Yes and yes it could be a gamble.

Mine arrived a little while ago. This card is massive and very heavy.

Well, I see no difference in Facebook and Youtube, kinda bummed at spending all this cash and it feels the same as my 980 SLI.

Runing it at defaults what's it boosting to?

My card wasn't happy till it was water cooled. Don't really know what it's problem was.. if it was the crappy coverage thermal goop on the gpu or overclocking with pxoc.. but I couldn't keep it happy above 2ghz even with temps as low as 53c in benxhmarks.

Then slapped on the ek block.. temps in the 31-33c range in benches and using afterburner curve method it's benching at 2114mhz! Haha

Never seen such a difference in water cooling before on a gpu. Usually it's the same on air but quiet and maybe get one notch higher in overclocks stable that wouldn't hold prior.

Also the men was a lot happier. Before could only get 12.8ghz stable without the screen blinking and now I can do up to 13.2ghz.

This is on the elite 12ghz memory card.

Im in the same boat as the op. My plasma tv broke down a year ago and the local store where i bought it couldnt get it to fix so i got a store credit for it. The thing is i dont know what to use that store credit for. Im thinking of selling my current 1080 strix and add that funds to get a 1080ti. But the same time If volta is around the corner im thinking of holding on and just wait for it. This upgrade itch is killing me. Lol.

If volta is coming soon? Ballparking... when do you guys think it will get release?

I wouldn't worry about it.. paper launch prob in March and prob won't see the first cards till June at huge markup and hard to find.. Better cards will follow months later.. so if ya want to wait like that long go ahead.

I grabbed a 1080ti (a few weeks ago) ftw3 elite 12ghz men speed that Overclocks to 2100+ and 13ghz memory speed over 1080sli. Happy at 4k.. and vr.

Don't wait. There's always selling your "new" card used in 3 months if you really want the new new. Getting a new GPU is fun. You will never regret buying the best that you can afford. You will always regret going a step or two down to save a buck.

Except that really isn't the case.
1080, released May 27, 2016
1080 TI, released March 10, 2017

Almost a year between release for those versions, and we are quickly closing in on a year from TI launch. So we are definitely at the end of the cycle here. Yes, there is always something newer coming out, but for a lot of us, getting in early on the cycle makes us feel better about spending the money.

Buying a TI right now, is almost the equivalent of buying the 2017 Car Model right now, while the 2018 Model is sitting right next to it, with 30 more hp, better appearance, cooler colors, etc. The discount better be steep or you feel ripped off.

And will be july/August before you see good air cooled 3rd party cards on store shelves for good prices.

Till then the people that jumped on the founders edition nvidia cards will be complaing about loud fans and needing aio coolers and asking where to buy them.. or waiting for manufacturers to hit with there water cooling blocks.

Me I'll wait for the newer 4k 100/120hz monitors hit and prices settle before I feel the need to upgrade from the new (few weeks old) 1080ti ftw3 elite card running 2100mhz+ 13k+ mem running a cool 34c tops and dead quiet. ;)

Again, speculation. Did we think AMD would come out swinging and mostly miss versus Pascal? Did we expect a 1070 Ti?

It's very likely something new will drop next Spring - so if you're running a GTX 960 today you are going to have ball sucking performance for months just to wait? What about when the x80 comes out? Oop, better wait for the Titan. Oh, that's too expensive? Oop, better wait for the Ti. And on and on.

It's your money but there is always something better.

Absolutely, there is always something coming down the pipeline, it is just a question of do you want it to be truly a few months from now or a year from now.

We can offer opinions, which is what they asked for, and we all have reasons why we do things. In the end it is the person's money and their decision, there are two sides that each have their merits.

However, the person is sitting with a 1080 right now and was considering going to a 1080TI, midway/late in the product cycle. Typically the value is decreased when comparing that to opting into the cycle much earlier on.

I was sitting on 1080 sli for 4k and made the jump.. main reason was to sell 1 and keep the other for my son's rig while selling off his 980 sli. So selling 3 cards to pay for the one... still gota list those cards.
