Just think without even using HBM. Nice! I will be due a laptop probably at the end of 2018 so I look very much forward to this tech with Volta next year.
 
Just a note as well, so people may understand how fast gaming laptops grow. In 2013 they sold around 1 million. In 2016 they sold 10 million. And they are on a fast track to be the dominant new gaming platform.

Kind of a late reply but a big bump in performance is only to low range CPU. It won't make that much impact on high end which already have high core count. There you can expect typical Intel increase.
But just check out that Dell XPS difference between 7th and 8th Gen... Worth it if you're into productivity machines.
Gaming already has powerful CPU.

Word. Back in university I used to lug around an 18.4 inch gaming laptop with a GTS 250M. It was like weight lifting every single school day. The whole thing totaled up to 5kg including the power brick.

Now that I think about it, that was probably why I was so much leaner back then.

It's crazy how much even just a couple pounds makes a difference. I had a 6lb 15" ASUS with a GTX 1070 in it and I moved to a 4lb 14" MSI with a GTX 1060 and it is like night and day. The performance difference is not that crazy where I miss the 1070, especially with the cheapo screens that laptops of this class have. Next year hopefully we see better screens throughout and not just the top end. If nothing else, I learned the 1060 is a beast.

Indeed.

I've been looking for laptops with a 1070, but I think that a 1060 will do just fine. At that, it seems like you can't get a 1070 without gsync which while gsync is nice, it's kind of a bummer because you can't use optimus and it causes the machines to tear through battery life.

Yeah, don't worry about G-SYNC at all, imo. I have two G-SYNC monitors here at home for my home PCs - love it - but on a laptop I haven't missed it. My 15" had it, my 14" doesn't - not a huge diff. Like I said, pretty "meh" screens anyway.
