2017 WCG X-mas Race

I ran this a bit again last night...good for testing overclocks I guess, before with the birthday thing it crashed my machine but I bumped things down a bit and I think it's stable now.

I have a new 8700k and a new-to-me 7600k that are both humming along at their OCCT-stable overclocks, and have been since the night before the race went live.

Got to wonder, though- I'm still learning about OCCT stability; it'll crash when Prime95 doesn't and when the XTU stress test passes, so what is our mark for WCG stability? I could push clocks higher absent adhering to what OCCT works at.

(well, not on the 7600k- Cryorg C7 for a cramped ITX build can only handle so much, even on an open bench!)

You really should change your work queue to 10 days on all your boxen. Just to ensure they'll have plenty of work for when that happens.

It might seem silly; but I don't like to do that as I never know when a box might have to go offline. Means I'm hording WUs that others might be able to do. Also don't know how long it takes the project to recycle aborted WU's back into the queue, which could impact folks waiting on a "wingman" WU to validate.

Deadlines are typically 7 or 10 days depending on sub project. Then a duplicate is sent out pretty quickly and is typically given a 4 day deadline IIRC.

Like Gil said. Just run projects that don't require a wingman (they score better anyway) and once the deadline is over they resend the work unit immediately.

I stole this from Stefan @ TAAT

KarsusTG did your boxes crash or something? Noticed you haven't returned any work in the past few days.

jje1701 where you at bro?

Guppy1509 you still around?

Jorona I see your boxes stopped returning work not too long ago also. Need help getting it back on?

wareyore we are missing your huge contribution from the Birthday Challenge last month. Could really use you right now.

Thanks for the persistence Skillz! If I didn't know any better, I'd think you were an Army recruiter. I still remember mine. He called basic training "summer camp".

Holding off Team China might be impossible; but that we're doing as well as we are is damn impressive! Let's keep growing and, before too much longer, we'll really be able to make them nervous. :)

Yeah, the Windows version will run on any version of Windows. Well, any "modern" version of Windows. I'm not sure it will run on anything XP and older and even then XP might work, but I doubt it.

Ya, I got it running. It's in the repos now hehe. Should run anytime I am not using the computer.

Do you know if the windows client will run on server 2012/2016? This computer will be going to server duty when I get my new workstation laptop.

I can verify that BOINC works just fine on Server 2008 R2. I can't imaging 2012 or 2016 would be any different, really. Possibly some firewall settings, but BOINC (without VB) is pretty universal. I'd skip virtualbox, the IP changes made some strange issues in at least two servers I previously had it on. If you need the VB software, I'd recommend running it virtualized itself so as to not tread on any other apps. WCG doesn't need VB as far as I know, at least not for the projects I've been running.

And I've gotta give props to team AnandTech, for putting together a very good standing in such a short time organizing. Impressive considering they didn't put together the effort until November 28th.

It sucks TAAT is going to League 1 next year in Formula-BOINC. I would much rather them hold onto the number #2 spot than the most likely EVGA team.

I've never seen mention of leagues. I checked WCG team challenges and found no mention of leagues. Where are these defined?

I am pretty sure I got you to help us with a couple FB challenges this year. This is the event we participate in throughout the year.

edit
It was when I got you to sign up for LHC and crunch for us for a few days.

That makes a lot more sense. Never actually went to that page. I take it the leagues are randomized? It looks like we're kicking some serious tail this year. I wonder how different it would be if Plext0r/Brilong were still in action. Where did he go, anyway?

No, the leagues was introduced this year. They're based on the active members of each project. Since the end of last year [H] looked really small due to only a few members and all of us mostly only running WCG we got placed on the lowest league, League 3.

Now that we dominated League 3 this year we will be moving up to League 2 next year. Basically the top 3 teams will move to the next League and the 3 lowest teams will move down to the next league.

Plext0r has been MIA for a little over a year now. Last word from him was his might be losing access to his CPU army and that's the last word we heard from him.

I see leagues on that page as early as 2014. Did they split those years into teams after the fact? I'm happy we're moving up leagues, though. I think if we keep going like we are, we can be real competitors even in League 1.

Ah I think I am only remember partially what happened that put us in League 3. I know for sure it's based on the RAC for each team and the projects they participate in and I am pretty sure that started this year. Which is why we went from League 1 to League 3, even though we should have been in League 2. Now they're doing the top 3 moves up and bottom 3 moves down thing. Gilthanis knows more about that than I do so I am sure he will come correct me. Hopefully.

Ive Joined in now Skillz ..... I am on my Skylake X right now but I will be switching to my Xeon 1620 and Coffee Lake I5 in a little bit and let them crunch away.

Awesome man! Hopefully I can recruit enough people to hold onto the #1 spot before Team China takes it from us.

Ya so I decided to join up while its cold out, got to say, not enjoying the windows client.
Ran overnight, 100% cpu... cool, look at it 24 hours later, said something about waiting for something (cpu usage was still at 100%), check out the options...
By default run at 60%... what the... change it to 100%, no longer says waiting, changes to running. But now only using 50% cpu usage.
Play around with it some more, see that it could use the gpu, logged into my account, turned on some options so that those "packets?" are allowed.
Restart the client, usage back to 100% progress bar jumps from 9% to over 50%, guessing got de-synced from the backend?

Ya so I decided to join up while its cold out, got to say, not enjoying the windows client...

With the exception of one machine (quad E7-8xxx) I've never had major issues with the Windows client. Keep in mind that certain things will stop BOINC from running. For instance, if you're RDP'ing into a box that's running GPU WU's, BOINC will stop. This drove me crazy; but in the end I just used a IP-KVM or IPMI... although not everyone has that option.

For a dedicated BOINC box, or at least one you want to run at 100% unless you say otherwise, configure your system as follows:
BOINC_Main_Settings.jpg

Keep in mind that the "Disk and Memory" tab can also come into play, depending on how much HDD & free RAM you have respectively. Others know the ins and outs of this better than I, but I do know some projects consume large amounts of RAM once you're feeding a bunch of simultaneous threads.

Good luck and welcome! :)

Oh, one other thing, BOINC can and will shuffle WU priorities around based on deadlines; just something else that can flag a WU as "waiting".

shots fired, shots fired

That's ok EVGA being 2nd, I know you will enjoy holding down 3rd place!
And if you stay ahead of that team who's name no one can pronounce, you may move up to league 1 after next year

shots right back at ya.

Ah, you must mean Sissy Toured a Disaster (area), only you have to pretend your mouth is filled with chewing tobacco, and say, "Sissy-tour-a-dastra."

:D

Leagues began in 2014 as we took 1st place in League 2 that year. A large portion of the credit went to Grandpa on that one. Back then it was all based on RAC in November. This year it was based on active number of members. Since we had a much smaller member list last year, we got bumped.
