Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Is there any way to NOT trigger those fucking drones? It seems like they will see a tiny sliver of me, in the dark, from about a mile away, and then there's no way to prevent the alarm from sounding. Really fucking frustrated with some of the "stealth" aspects of this game.
I've tried taking them out with a silenced gun but that seems to end up alerting everyone. Not sure what strategy to use there.

I'm not enjoying this one as much as New Order. It's just too dark.

It's the same reason I only watched the first season of House of Cards, and Man from High Castle. It makes you feel down.

It's somewhat oppressive, it's so dark. The story's interesting, but I agree with the post who said New Order was about hope, and Colossus is not.
Agreed! It's so dark that I have to play something else right after to get rid of the crappy feels!

Glad my wife wasn't around for some of the cut-scenes. Speaking of, is there a profanity filter that can be enabled? I prefer not having to use headphones.

Interesting that some people find this dark... I thought the game was dark in the beginning with the hopelessness surrounding BJ's condition, but then...

The game completely jumps the shark and beheads him, but that's ok, because everyone knows how easy it is to plug and play your head on a different body. From that point forward, the hopelessness is gone. BJ is once again invincible and the game is the same obscene nazi killing spree that it's always been. I mean I'm only just past Hitler's movie audition scene, so maybe it gets darker, but currently I'm just not seeing it. There's still a lot of humor, even in the Hitler audition sequence. Hell, even the banter between the KKK members when you first meet them is humorous.

The ONLY part in this game I've chuckled at is when Anna says something to the effect she's hot for BJ, and then realizes she's on the open channel and asks if anyone else is listening, and 3 or 4 people sound off from the submarine command post, and then Max sounds off with his retarded "Max Hass" or whatever it is he says. Not sure why that struck me as funny, but I don't think I've even cracked a smile anywhere else in the game so far. Frankly, I'd call this game anything but humor filled. It is interesting enough to keep going back, but just in short doses to avoid feeling despair in real life.

Some of the cutscenes and situations seems really contrived and out of place. The vomiting scene with hitler, the sex scene with Frau's daughter, the over the top fro wearing, jive talking, video game variant of Samuel L. Jackson (Grace) - who somehow assumed command of the whole operation? The whole It's Alien's Man seen. The priest clothes wearing leader from New Orleans, who was a pacifist, the whole BJ birthday party where BJ is riding a pig, etc.

Weird... Not really connecting me to the game - other than weird...

I just finished the acting scene and got the part in Hitler's play. What is that about 1/2 or 2/3's through the game (I'm guessing?)

Well, I like "oppressive material." It makes me view life in a more favorable fashion as I know it isn't that way. Even if living through Social Media has created that false narrative. Anyway, the game ends with a more standard way...thus, not being "oppressive." It definitely feels that way going in, but leaving the game, it does not. I'm currently doing a lot of post game things and, honestly, I'm losing momentum.

I like the game but I don't feel that did a good job setting up the post game stuff as meaningful. We'll see how the DLC all pans out.

I'm a fan of oppressive material as well, in a lot of cases anyway. Mostly the Cyberpunk sort of genre, but it extends out from there. I find it interesting to step into those sorts of worlds via fiction/games/books. It kind of gets my imagination rolling, thinking about what kind of miscreant I'd be in that world. I also really liked the atmosphere in Ultima VIII: Pagan for the same sorts of reasons. You're forced to do things that maybe you don't want to do on occasion, hopefully for the greater good.

On the flip-side, I also like Mario games. :D

Wolfenstein 2's remaining season pass story episodes now have release dates

Bethesda has announced releases dates for the three remaining episodes in Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus' story-based season pass DLC, The Freedom Chronicles...each new episode lets you experience Wolfenstein's Nazi occupation of America through the eyes of different resistance fighters...you'll explore the ruins of Chicago (and, apparently, space) as professional quarterback Joseph Stallion, you'll infiltrate Nazi bunkers in California as ex-OSS agent and assassin Jessica Valiant, and head to Alaska as the heroic Captain Gerald Wilkins, in a bid to thwart the Nazis' Operation Black Sun...

4 months is not that long...
It's relative and depends on the person, I suppose?

I'll probably wrap up the Ubercomanders in the next week or so, and I doubt I'll be playing much more than that (i.e. Wyatt's timeline, maybe?) so that's a two week wait to Gunslinger Joe, and I've been tearing through the game at a quick enough pace that I'm not sure I'll be stretching the playthrough to the end of January. Then, the "March 2018" may be as late as "right before April" so that's quite a distance away.

For... "over nine hours" of gameplay? That's what, three hours per episode?

Personally, that feels like a long time to keep a game installed and to remember to come back to it.

(But then again how long did I keep Deus Ex: Mankind Divided installed? From August until Feb or something? Actually I might have uninstalled and then subsequently reinstalled it.)

I'm a fan of oppressive material as well, in a lot of cases anyway.

I know I don't like the game in general but this was something that was an issue for me as well. First off, the way they handle a lot of the serious tones in this game are a bit more hamfisted than I would have liked. Scenes that should have mattered like Caroline's death held very little impact. Even the level design being oppressive just made things more frustrating than depressing. The level of darkness in most levels, even on my HP Omen 32, was way too much often causing me to jack up the brightness in the games options every 2 minutes. Seriously, the beginning levels are so dark I started messing with my monitors settings lol.

I just finished the entire main storyline (haven't played Episode Zero yet) and overlal it was enjoyable. I believe it is important to look at i as a separate chapter and sequel to The New Order; on its own, it falls down a bit and people will not "get" things quite as much. (ie if you don't understand Da'at Yichud technology and what it is, what it can do.. lots of things will seem like ass-pulled elements) If I had to compare the two, I'd go as far as saying that The New Order was in some ways a bit better, but The New Colusssus was not bad at all. They did a lot of the "darkest" stuff in the first game, so they couldn't just repeat it here (ie we don't need to go to another concentration camp etc..) whichI thought was a smart move.

WIthout giving too many spoliers, they did give fans some of what they wanted (ie from the first time I saw that suit of armor, I wanted to wear it, so it was cool to do so, though it would have been nice to have more of its special abilities). The leveling system and perks were all right, but I didn't like that some weapons were borderline useless (ie the shotgun required too many reloads, even fully upgraded). The late-game "special equipment" was neat and it was nice you could gain them all later on;(if you like stealth, pick the Constrictor harness first. ) thjough side quests. I have to say that the post-game side quests were a bit grindy (admittedly, I did many of them pr-endgame that I could) but the big disappointmetn was the lack of "special/second ending". Oh and for those interested, of all the Extras/collectibles , only the Death Cards grant ANY extra real game content aside from concept art etc. Note: Both the Death Cards and Max's Toys are exclusively found in the Ubercommander missions where you go back to old stages and need Enigma keys to unlock, so keep that in mind. Upon finding all 15 death cards, there is a special 16th Ubercommander mission but ONLY APPEARING AFTER THE END OF MAIN CAMPAIGN. Its worth doing for its unique, claustrophobic nature but I really wish it would have offered at least another cinematic or specialty ending.

All in all, I enjoyed it - finding as many of the in-game readables and Records will add to your enjoyment if you like they world they've built. Oh and most of the "political" objection about the game is horseshit - people getting angry who never finished it but instead saw a single afro'd "angry black woman" caricature and lost their mind. She's not seen to be "right" in all things nor is she anti-white (even for the setting - a world in which WW2 ended with a Nazi victory and invasion, including nuking Manhattan, would probably mean that lots of people deemed "untermenchen" would have a big reason to be pissed/bitter). Even more than the first game, they did a really good job of humanizing the Nazis - read the letters for example, and even Grace herself said something like "These aren't just monsters under those helmets, they're men. Men can do both beautiful and monstrous things" Story wise they did some neat things and at its end feel like they're ready for a 3rd game all ready - which I hope they get.

Going to put this last bit under a spoiler....
Some will feel Frau Engel was a great villain others will feel Strausser/Deathshead was better. I can see arguments for both. However one particular person stands out as out of character in my opinion - Hitler himself. After both The Old Blood and The New Order we FINALLY get to see Der Fuhrer himself and he's...basically at his worst from representations of media we've generated in our post war era. He's childish, both physically and mentally frail etc... and this is in a world where Axis won WW2, nuked USA, and there are Nazi moon bases and a fucking VENUS base by 1961, not to mention all the science and tech shown in these games. When BJ Himself gets his head cut off and saved aty the last second, before being put on a Nazi super ubermench body, and in the previous game "brains in jars with consciousness" were shown to be a thing,... why the hell is Hitler himself not enhanced with the best tech the Reich can offer? I would have loved to a resurgent Hitler who is every bit as great and menacing as the rest of the Nazi think him to be set up as the primary antagonist for the third game. Hell, I would have loved a "second ending" to this game where you get to fight him in a parallel of the old Wolfenstein 3D boss battle against him to a draw , or even be beaten handily. They did consider the old game a little though, as there is one of the lasty main campaign readables - a letter from "AH" to Frau Engle talking about basically dreaming how he captured and killed BJ using the super armor Totenkopf made for him... which of course was all in his head etc. Maybe they didn't want to make Hitler laudable in any way even as an antagonist, but I think things are worse for it

Has anyone attempted Mein Leben difficulty yet? Until they fix the hit sounds and other bugs I don't see how it's possible. I tried and I got dropped by someone far away wailing on me I couldn't even hear and I didn't even make it to the suit. :/

I played about 3/4 the way through on Terror Billy then moved it down to easy as I was getting a bit bored with it.

Just beat it. Way shorter than I expected. Ended kind of abruptly too. My immediate reaction was "that's it?"

There was no significant boss fight. Just a wave of soldiers and two stupid robots that are easily taken down with a BFG.

Where's Hitler? Are they saving him for another game? I mean he was on Venus, and BJ just leaves without killing him? I was really hoping for a MechaHitler boss fight.

Also, no killing of the KKK? I could've sworn I saw a trailer where BJ was mowing down KKK. Did I imagine that?

Why did Anya take her shirt off at the end? She just felt like bathing in Nazi blood or what?

I agree
I’ll put my thoughts behind a spoiler tag too.

.
Anna’s shirt coming off at the end dropped the game from a B to a C to me. It was there for shock value and nothing else. It made no sense whatsoever, and confirmed the game’s intent to put shock value above character development and good story. Why would Anna be on the mission to attack the ship in the first place? Why not Fergus, Grace, or one of the New Orleans crew? His pregnant girlfriend who represents everything he lives and fights for on basically a suicide mission? Stupid...

l totally agree with you about Hitler too. Sure, it’s setting up for a sequel, but there is no way the character we know in BJ, after getting to know him in previous games, wouldn’t just break Hitlers neck in person and fight through the consequences — or die trying.
.

Truly those two storyboard choices, along with other shock value and character missteps (Grace, Aliens guy, and activist Pastor) dropped my appreciation level from a game I’d recommend — to a game I’d probably advise passing on.

You like Wolfenstein? Play, or replay New Order. It’s a significantly better game.

I’d say Old Blood was a C-, and Collusus was a C, and New Order was an A+.

This series needs a reset. Even the previous game had a better balance and didn't take itself so damned seriously.

I know I can dream on about having another game like what for a lot of us is a classic in the 2001 Return to Castle Wolfenstein and its Enemy Territory companion (why don't we have games like these any more?) but I certainly wouldn't mind some kind of a shift more back in that direction vs any more of the likes of this.

I still haven't finished this...as a mainly stealth player there are some parts that are just absurdly frustrating. They really need to re-tool the way detection and alarms work.

Given the weapons it seems that stealth may not be the game's focus, but if you run and gun more than likely you are just going to die given the poor hit feedback and insane enemy aim.

I can't even fathom playing this game stealth. To me there's nothing satisfying about walking behind an enemy and "press F to kill". It's basically a quick time event that triggers a kill animation. Where's the fun in that?

Contrast to something more interactive like a Metal Gear game where you have options. You can choke them, knock them out, kill them, drag them, or intimidate them for information.

The New Colossus demo is now available on Steam...the trial version covers the full first level of the game...click the 'Download Demo' button...

So I rewatched the scene and she took it off because it was on fire. Didn't catch that the first time around.

Yeah, I heard this after I saw it. Didn't notice it was on fire either. Still doesn't explain why the fuck she's fighting with twins lol.

I got this during the Steam sale and was super disappointed with the performance. I don't know what the fuck was happening but it had insane amounts of tearing and jitter at like 120 fps.

Like literally unplayable levels of bad. It was like gsync wasn't working for one and even if I forced vsync, it was microstuttering like crazy. I could actually see all the hitches on the built in performance graph.

Finally I dropped everything to dog shit settings and it smoothed out. So I went through the settings one by one to figure out what was causing the hitches... and wound up maxing the game it without it ever coming back.

No idea what it was. Restarting the game didn't help, it just magically fixed once I turned everything down and back up.

You bought a Bethesda game and wanted it to play fine the first time you run it. Shame on you :p.

So far I'm enjoying this, but there's a couple things that bug me. The pacing seems a little off, or maybe missions too short. Ultimately, so far, most will yield you mowing down a few groups with a bit of creative railroading.

Set pieces are not particularly interesting so far. Areas generally look nice, but I'm just not really feeling much... I dunno, feeling behind them. The subway tunnels don't really feel creepy like I expected them too, nor do the decrepit houses and storefronts. I feel like the atmosphere just isn't coming though like I expected it to.

Also everyone besides Big Dick BJ is fucking useless so far. At least they allude to you being an absolute menace though in the story. Nazi's talk about it and whatnot and there's notes and shit about you which is a nice touch.

Also also I don't think I've ever played a shooter with less feedback from you getting hit. You make almost no noise, there's like no real impact sound, and you can easily lose half your health to one dude 30 feet away mag dumping his SMG that has less punch sound wise than a paper bag being crumpled. Your aim doesn't really kick or anything, there's no real plink of bullets smacking against your super suit, you don't really yelp or anything, and there's almost no visual impact at all. Bullets just kinda fly in your direction and 90% of the feedback is a number decreases. Everything else is so subtle...

Sounds are really, really wimpy, I think. Like I fucking swing my axe and whack it against the metal interior of a vent and all I get is a split second 'TIK' noise that sounds like I dropped a paper clip on to my desk or some shit. I can cleave though someone's legs in one swing but bashing it against any other surface puts out noise equivalent to a gnat farting.

Yes sounds and feedback from getting hit is shite. I had to constantly watch the health and armor numbers to know what is status.

Agreed on the damge feedback. Multiple times I was just dead without even realizing I was being hurt. They should have down the fading to red or dimming mechanic that is typical.

Do you remember that being a problem with the last couple Wolfenstein games? That isn’t something I recall being an issue?

Finished the game a couple of days ago, and have been working on the ubercommander missions. The last one was a complete letdown…

The last ubercommander mission was a letdown. Starts out awesome: it's dark, I have a flashlight, and as I start into the level the darkness deepens into pitch black. I have no peripheral vision because I can only see what's in the flashlight beam, the music is getting really atmospheric. Walls are tight and they seem to appear out of nowhere, awesomely claustrophobic. This clearly was a Nazi base, because there are propaganda posters on the walls and ammo/health stations. There are also warning signs on the walls and blocked doors, and the base is clearly without power and has been abandoned. The only enemies are robots, and it always sounds like there's something shuffling in the distance. Something has gone wrong here for the Nazis.
For the entire game, there have been no mutants, no monsters, none of the hocus-pocus that the pre-New Order games had (and that Old Blood awesomely included). Now I'm thinking that this is it - we're now going to have some boss fight where the ubercommander that I'm sent to assassinate is a mutant or something. Possibly transformed by an experiment gone wrong on Da'at Yichud technology. Who knows, but it's going to be awesome.
I come across supersoldiers. Hmm, weird, I wouldn't expect to see that around a mutant. I'd expect a few giant robots instead. But we've seen supersoldiers in other abandoned areas, so that's alright, the giant mutant must be coming up soon, especially beacuse the game is giving me tons of health and armor, and I've come across those laser weapons.
Then I come across the regular soldiers. WTF, those shouldn't be here with a giant dangerous mutant stalking around. Whoever designed this level clearly messed up.
I emerge to a small arena area, and no mutant. I progress to another arena with laser weapons - no mutant, just some supersoldiers.
Finally, I find an exit to the base, and find:
a stupid (ok, its black and kind of badass looking) giant robot, and a human ubercommander. A couple blasts from the laser rifle and the robot is done, and then the commander is toast. No giant mutant :(

I really feel that the potential of the level was wasted and that they could have done so much more.

This is a fantastic point. I too felt that there should have perhaps been a second/special ending upon completing that mission, at least. Your idea was another great one but yeah... great build up, though kind of a let down.

Did you read the notes during the last few levels (I think) from the Oberkommando research division talking about some sort of special technology that was imported from somewhere in Europe that was incredibly dangerous? I too was thinking this was a nod to The Old Blood. The note mentioned that everyone sending out these artifacts had been killed, the entire research base was basically leveled by something huge if I'm remembering correctly etc.. .which makes me thing it is technology/magic related to the final boss of The Old Blood! Neat foreshadowing if they mean he'll be making a return next game, but yeah.. it seemed like this secret mission in the bunker would have been a great place to at least start the first step down this path.

You're right that Wolfenstein games have also looked into both technology and occultism for Nazi power and it would be nice to see even more of it. Next time around there will clearly be another Da'at Yichud widget given what Set Roth is playing with at the end of The New Colossus, but it was kind of disappointing that we didn't actually get to go into the Area 51 Vault itself. Early Wolftenstein titles such as Spea of Destiny had even greater occult themes and power so their absence from TNC was a bit of a let down given that during TNO we at least were exposed to Da'at Yichud items like the crazy thing that destroyed the bridge project at Gibraltar and Caroline/BJ's Ultra Mobility Armor. Next time, next time.

This is such a very weird thing if you think about it. I mean what possible difference would it make? Like are the Germans that ashamed of the past that heaven-forbid someone shows Hitler and they get riled up about it?
