Stanford University Data Glitch Exposes Truth about Scholarships

A glitch that allowed public access to thousands of confidential student financial aid records revealed that for years, Stanford has given steep price breaks to preferred applicants while claiming the scholarships were only for needy students. A 378-page statistical analysis showed the difference between the school’s claim of fairly awarded scholarships and what it had actually been doing.

It does discriminate — often favoring female applicants, international students, and those with backgrounds in finance, says the report by Adam Allcock, a Stanford business school student from the United Kingdom who found and analyzed the data. The school “represents its financial aid system to students as ‘non-merit-based,’ while operating it as ‘merit-based’ by secretly rating students and manually deciding how much (scholarship money) they should receive.”

Yet somehow as a white american male, something like this is still all my fault I'm sure. *eyeroll*

That's right, I'm sure you can head to 4chan and hang out with the rest of your oppressed brothers.

You could start a trend. #whataboutme or #iwannabesadtoo or #thematriarchystolemysammich

Right now a smart lawyer is putting together a title ix class action suit against standford for an easy payday.

You really need some lessons in sarcasm and contextual humor. When the system is purported as fair to everyone but favors X gender or Y color, everyone else has a right to be mad, my white male ass included. Doesn't matter what I say, I'm automatically wrong according to you because of my color and gender, congrats on being part of the problem.

I'd love to hear your logic on how discrimination is totally cool from this entity just because it seems to favor women and international students? If you don't want the odds to be universally fair or the rules universally applied, how is it any different than the shit that's been going on the past 100 years?

I've worked in and around places that have stuff like this setup, and the usual root cause of setups like these is that X company or Y school simply wants to look good and be able to say "we are so awesome look at us" What good are rules and equality if you are willing to shit all over the rule book itself?

Passive aggressive thumb sucking belongs on twitter.

Don't join in on the cacophony of sissy-lipped "poor me" belly aching that fills the internet.

That probably makes me the worst kind of sexist, but oh well. I'm an ass hole. I'm also a patriarch.

We're men, when one door is closed we make a new door, or several.

Plus if you want complete honesty, there isn't much doubt that white men were to blame for this one. This system was almost certainly devised by white men, it was designed to keep the children happy.

I guess I really am a sexist bastard.

I love how the response to a legitimate gripe from a white male is treated with scorn by people that would probably be flipping out if the gripe went the other direction.

and when you go to graduate school in some sort of science you typically get more of a stipend than someone who's an English major or something because schools know what brings in the bucks. As undergrad you give the props to business majors because they'll be the ones making it big then when Stanford hits them up with their "wouldn't you like to donate to your alma mater?" spiel, they get more money.

It is their money, but when they have stated for decades that they are showing no bias or discrimination in the way their scholarships are divvied out, but the reality is opposite of that, it makes them out to be a bunch of lying assholes and creates a whole lot of anger from a) people that didn't get into Stanford because of the bias, or b) people that did go to Stanford but have a lot of extra student debt because they weren't given what should have been a fair portion of the scholarship pool due to the discrimination.

I'm too white, too rich, and too tired of the internet to give two fucks about any of this.

Edit.. but I do have a background in finance.

Exactly. If it is their money, they get to do what ever the fuck they want with it.
Not when "their money" comes from donations, partially predicated on the expectation it will be used for a certain kind of scholarship. A private company cannot solicit donations for "outreach to underprivileged communities" then use the money to give more competitive starting bonuses to the blokes they actually want.
