My mother (who is on Ubuntu Mate) unfortunately uses Skype to communicate with my sister who lives abroad. Today she complains that Skype lost the stored user credentials.

Turns out that even after resetting the password, Skype crashes immediately after logging in.

The reason? Skype got updated apparently and a new fugly and bloated new version was downloadable from their site. Thanks a lot again Microsoft, wasted an hour of my life.

I'm sure the issue with Skype under Linux is no mistake just as much as I'm sure Microsoft will act like it is. ;)

"Unfortunately uses Skype?" Dude, set her up on a virtual machine of whatever Windows and run it from there. Skype is not a Linux based program and therefore, it is not a Skype problem. (Communication with family is far more important anyways.)

There's a native Skype client under Linux.

However, Skype is garbage now, even under Windows. Best to use something like Google Hangouts.

Skype is utter shit and steadily crapped features in last few years while Microsoft worked their magic. It's so bad now they tried to make some snapchat hybrid.. Got to point now I can't even migrate contacts on a new install, which used to work fine. You have to re-add each contact as they're not added by default. Very professional.. Giving it up completely now, goodbye and good riddance you piece of shit.

Well, well, did not know that, that is cool. Things happen, Skype is not what it used to be but still works well. I use it on my XBox One X and previous One without issues, except having to rediscover the program when they changed it around a bit.

A lot of people still use Skype for business oriented things, unfortunately.

Which is my biggest problem. Infuriating. At this point I'm considering running an XP Laptop just to keep it going without the hassle of inviting all the contacts again.

It is a shame as Skype actually used to be quite good, but MS have castrated it to a shadow of it's former self, in many cases there's better alternatives now.

I was thinking for a moment to install Slack to my mother but then I would have had to call my sister abroad and have her install it too. I chose to try to fix Skype instead.

The Google hangouts seemed very poor to me when I checked it out.
