Oculus Rift Owners Thread

Heh, maybe I got overconfident with the nausea thing. Minecraft did stop giving me nausea (and I had it on "intense mode from the start") and Project Cars 2 was not too bad, but now that I tried Deus Ex Mankind Divided VR Experience demo it was instant nausea-city. Dunno if it had something to do with using controller instead of mouse for turning but I have to stop using VR for this day, my head is spinning like crazy. :)

Haha. I read it does that to like 1/2 the people?

Yes, and I've read that you should never push over the edge because it can make matters worse (and today I clearly did, I ignored the warning signs :) ). So baby steps until my brain gets used to it. Now that I found my achilles heel in Deus Ex VR with controller I think I'll try it daily in short bursts and see what happens.

Sounds kinda boring since it is not even a game and I saw everything it had already, in dizzy haze maybe but still... XD

Here's a link to hang onto:

Oculus Store Spoofer http://mysteryroom.cz/oculus-spoofer/

It shows what's currently on sale in the Oculus Store. Ooo look at that, Obduction is 50% off. Anyone know if it's any good?
I have not tried Obduction. Hmmmm. Need to check it out.

Drunken bar fight is pretty fun! I just bought Racket Fury: Table tennis and its pretty fun. Killing Floor:Incursion was really fun, but short.

So I got VorpX and tried Fallout 4 with it and so far I think it does pretty much what I need. Only problem was that my CPU is bottlenecking like crazy with that game. 2500K was on its last legs with default FO4, especially when you hit the cities, and VorpX pushed it over the edge. Stutters like crazy. I can get it playable by using Z-Normal (faked stereo 3D) instead of true geometric 3D and using the option which caps the game at 45fps but that is not exactly preferable solution. Some HUD problems aside I was pleased with the result but I definetly have to try it with a game that is less CPU and ram speed demanding. Bioshock series are next.

Well, Fallout 4 VR is only a month away from release. Bethesda is also doing the same for Skyrim supposedly. I would imagine fully native VR support built into the game by the company that made the game will be far superior to whatever Vorpx can deliver.

Of course. And I will get both of them at some point (although spending more money on a game that I have already spent almost 400 hours kinda rubs me the wrong way... :p ) and hopefully this time Bethesda has done some optimisation work on the engine because it runs like ass as it is now and VorpX makes it even worse.

^^^^^ Just surprised that you would fork over $40 for VorpX and spend the time/effort to set it up to play Fallout 4 when a native VR release of Fallout 4 is literally just around the corner. Everything I've read about VorpX pretty much sums it up as sort of a forced hack that really isn't ideal and suffers quite a bit especially where VR controller integration is concerned.

My son payed for it, but if he did not, I would have in a second. They bring new life to already played/older games.

Ok. If you have older games and really want to force them into VR, I guess that's one way to go about it. I guess I'm just not that interested in trying to go that route with keyboard and mouse control in VR and much prefer newer games that are actually built/designed for VR from the ground up and incorporate the use of 3D motion controllers. But, to each his/her own and if VorpX does it for you, then great! The only older game I'm really interested in playing in VR is Skyrim, but that is already slated for a full VR makeover by Bethesda, so I'll just sit tight and see how it goes.

Bioshock was awesome under Vorpx. I really enjoyed it. Yeah, full controller support would be good, but I won't skip it just because it isn't ideal.

It's not just Fallout, its dozen other games too. Bioshock series as mentioned, Dishonored, GTA V (although I lately found out you can make it VR without VorpX) and so on.

How do you make GTA V VR without VorpX?

Gave in at the $350 sale price and picked up a Rift. Looking forward to getting it set up when it gets here. Any absolute must have accessories or games I should get?

Well, the Rift already comes with a crap load of games to include:

Lucky's Tale
Medium
Toybox
Quill
Dead and Buried
Dragon Front
Robo Recall

There's also a bunch of "free" content that is really good, especially:

Google Earth VR
The Lab
Accounting
Rec Room

If it were me, I'd say the following are also easily in the "must have" category:

Lone Echo
Gorn
Arizona Sunshine
Elite Dangerous
Superhot
Tilt Brush
The Talos Principle VR
Raw Data
The Climb
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes
I Expect You To Die
Blaze Rush
Universe Sandbox 2
Onward
Pavlov VR
Hot Dogs, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades

There's no need to rush out and buy them all now. However, there are some really good Steam as well as Oculus store sales going on right now. For example:
Elite Dangerous $13.49 (Normally $30)
Pavlov VR $6 (Normally $10)
Universe Sandbox 2 $16.74 (Normally $25)
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes $4.94 (Normally $15)
etc.

Might be a good idea to snag a few while they are on sale.

Thanks. I think I'm definitely going to get Elite: Dangerous. I think I'm also going to get Talos Principle since I've wanted to play that anyway, and I may as well play it in VR.

Got my rift + touch for $349 during the sale last week. Ordered a StarTech USB 3.0 card 4 ports because it had the recommended chipset by oculus. My test showed usb 3.0 green on all connections. Had trouble installing on my aging 1100t.. had to get an old runtime exe, but it works great. I was blown away. I wish i would have jumped on the Rift bandwagon earlier... Its incredible, its hard to describe how immersive the experience is. I cannot wait to get home and play... havent been this excited since i got my first super nes

I know the feeling. Be prepared for a big shit eating grin to be plastered all over your mug for the duration of the weekend. :D So much really great VR content out there now as well.

Definitely grab Lone Echo - really great experience/game and it really triggered me (in a good way) as to showing off the potential this gaming medium really has. It's mind blowing. It's included in the Rift "Pack 1" bundle on the Oculus store which is on sale right now (ends tomorrow morning) for $99. Worth every penny for all seven of the games you get - they are all very good, hell most of them are outstanding.

This! Also have fun trying to play regular 2D games after..... It just isn't the same.

I think I just shed a tear. Such a thing of beauty. And I haven't even finished the setup yet...

I finally took mine out of the box today and got it going. The experience blew me away at first but the low resolution and screen door effect is pretty bothersome. The wires get in the way at times too and I have already ran over them a few times with my chair. Plus it only added to the rats nest of cluttered wires at my desk. I certainly look forward to the future displays that will have much higher resolutions and hopefully be wireless too...

The Rift uses only 1 wire to the HMD. Some games are lower resolution than others. Yes, this is still version 1.0. Hopefully 2.0 brings 4K each eye and wireless. I am hoping next year sometime, but we will see.

Man, low resolution is something I'm not going to be able to handle. 4k per eye sounds like it might be enough... gonna have to get another 1080Ti... :D

To me at least, the "low resolution" argument is way overblown. Especially as an excuse not to try it. I'm pretty sensitive to resolution as well - can't stand 1080p gaming unless I absolutely have to on a console for example. My rig's regular 2D setup involves a 32" high-res (4K g-sync LCD) display.

Gen 1 VR has plenty of resolution for what it does. Once in a compelling game, heck or even in Steam's demo "The Lab" the resolution issue/screen door effect is immediately forgotten as immersion/presence kicks in and you simply enjoy the hell out of the experience and are literally transported "elsewhere". Could it be better? Sure. Gen 2 should be even more impressive, but Gen 1 still delivers a great experience. Supersampling, if you have a higher end GPU, also improves things dramatically. Low res isn't something that you have to struggle to "accept" or handle continuously like you would if playing an old/low-res game on your high end monitor in 2D where everything is a pixelated mess.

VR Gen 2 will most certainly have higher resolution and probably less SDE and more FOV, but is that reason enough for me to not want to game in VR Gen 1 now? Hell No! Gen 1 VR more than delivers a great experience and VR Gen 2 is easily a good year, if not two away still. Also, there is a ton of really great VR content out there now to enjoy and get lost in.

You play robo recall yet?

Some games are better then others. But even said, graphics don't really matter much on vr cause the while experience is where it's at.

You just gotta adjust the headset right on the face.. a little low and ecrrything is clear.. and dont forget sbout adjusting thr lenses sude to sude to get them perfect.

For the wires there's stuff like this to help with that..

Yes I played Robo Recall for a bit. And the experience is great but I disagree that graphics don't matter. In fact I find it really bothersome how low res and jaggy things look in some games. And what's with the floating snow like stuff in every game?

My best experience so far has been Batman Arkham AR and everyone here should get that game. It is only a few bucks on some of the key sites. Lol I thought I was going to fall over when I was standing on the edge at the top of a building.

I have seen the snow like stuff in games where it is snowing.... Not sure what you mean.

Yes, Some games were done with crappy graphics.

Has anybody played Doom VFR on their Rift? Seen some reviews on the game itself, and said even on the Vive it sucked.

Pretty much every game has the little floating stuff but some games more than others.

I have to say.... since my first Rift Awakening!...like the first time i played Doom back on my 486dx2 ... i could not believe the immersion. Since then.... i have been wanting that feeling but it never came. Until last Thursday night, i call it the Awakening because my brain was on stimulation overload and i found myself transported to another place. I could not wait to have someone else experience just the opening demo where you see your virtual hands for the first time!... To watch the look on my sons face when he was transported to the trailer with the Robot... was classic. His jaw was dropped the whole time. I have to say this has been one of the best purchases of my life, and i have yet to scratch the surface of it. Truly an amazing experience...its like having a theme park in my basement. I downloaded Quill thinking...well my daughter who is in animation will probably like it...its just a VR paint program right?...Wrong!... blown away again... drawing in air all around you is freaking crazy. Then i loaded some of the VR art files that came with the download... Its hard to describe the level of my wonderment...experiencing someones artistic vision with sound and actually be inside the painting. I am having trouble with Medium, it will not launch, so i am going to try and reinstall later this week. Oculus definitely hit a home run with the Rift + Touch. The whole platform is impressive and polished. Of course its been out for awhile but every little detail on the system has impressed me. As some have said...playing a game on a monitor now just seems mundane.

As cool as VR is, it's just not something I'm ready to jump into- yet. I'm here to learn, and I do appreciate opposing opinions, though!

I think the low resolution argument is way overblown too. I know when I put on the headset first the resolution isn't great, but, within minutes, my eyes and brain adjust and I don't even notice anymore. I feel sorry for those people who can't get over the low resolution hump, because they are missing out. I have been gaming for 30 years now and the Rift has been the best purchase that I have ever made for my computer. I have had more wow moments since owning the Rift than I have had through all the rest of gaming/hardware years. The immersion factor, the presence, the ability to actually be in the game far outweigh the low resolution.

There is only one way to learn about VR and that's to try it. No amount of discussion, watching videos, looking at pictures or reading articles can adequately convey the sense of presence you have in game when using VR. Like when you play Elite Dangerous on a monitor and then you start it up in VR, nothing can prepare you for that moment when you see your ship in the hanger for the first time. Or the fit of giggles you get when you beat a robot to death with it's own leg in Robo Recall. Or that total freedom of movement when you float through space in Lone Echo.

Totally agree.. low res, screen door...all gone when you start dodging and ducking under things, or turn your head and jump because there's a fricken thing right next to you. My son streams every day.. goes to twitch con... or whatever its called.. he games all the time. When he pulled off the HMD and looked me and said "that was the coolest thing ive ever done" All sweaty and breathing heavily. He didnt even know how long it had been. He said "How long was i in there?"...
