Windows 10 Fall Creators Update- October 17th

Having this weird issue now on 1709 where after my computer is idle for a while, when I hit the Start button it pops up but the bottom half is missing. Within a split second it fills in but it's weird. Haven't seen this before the past update or possibly last Nvidia GPU driver update (both about a week ago).

Anyone else have the Windows mail account settings Window no longer open up? On my Surface Pro 3 and Athlon 5350 build, it works as it should. However, on my two main desktops, the account settings Windows will not come up, even in a new Windows user account.

I've always had issues with Windows mail, as a result I just cannot use it anymore. Every time I've set it up for a client the software randomly just will not open attachments - Seems worse when configuring the client to a Gmail account.

What I'd give for Outlook Express to make a return, never had a single issue with that - In fact I preferred it in many ways to Outlook.

Why not switch to Tbird?

That's what I do, Thunderbird is the most reliable mail client around IMO.

Windows 10 mail is shocking.

All the 'apps' in Win10 are abysmal. Fugly and laggy + broken most of the time. It's just amazing how bad they can make things.

Which is no help but then again, what a shock and surprise. /s  I asked for specific assistance, you clearly cannot offer it so, move along. (Unless I am wrong, do you have an actual solution to the problem itself? Not a use another program crap?)

That's my biggest reason to recommend my customers not use any Microsoft mail products. They get used to Outlook Express which is killed in favor of Mail which was killed in favor of Live Mail which was killed in favor of Mail. They always have to learn a new program with a slightly different visual style. Had they gone with Thunderbird or something else they could have kept using the same program which wouldn't be such a shock.

It's OK to be critical, we all live in the real world here.

People have offered assistance, they've effectively informed you that as a mail client Windows 10 Mail is garbage and to use Thunderbird.

I haven't run into this, though I rarely access that panel. Are those on 1709 yet? I know the Mail app had some updates recently that changed a bunch of stuff.

no shit! telling people to just use something else is not helping...

have you tried running an app reset in the apps/features panel? that might fix it...

Just now and it did not help, unfortunately. :( I also tried removed Mail and Calendar completely, deleting everything out of the Comms folder and reinstalling the app. Unfortunately, clicking the + Add account button shows the color change but the dialog for adding a new account does not open. This happened after I installed the 1709 FCU update about 2 weeks before official release through the Windows insider program.

I am seriously considering installing the next slow release build and see if that helps.

You have no choice when the app itself has issues.

What you're not understanding, and what everyone is saying, is that Windows 10 mail...Is shit.

Windows 10 mail is a hopeless mail client and it has numerous issues that diagnosis is not going to resolve.

are you right up to date with the insider versions, 17046? also, are you trying to add an account through the mail app or the accounts section in settings?

off topic i know! forgive me lol.....But what are the benefits of using the mail app versus just using the browser online way? I always wondered since i just use chrome and gmail since forever. I guess its more for business/office professional users?

Through the email app or settings results in the same behavior, I just gave it a try. I am also not in the Insider Preview anymore but, I may need to try it just to see what happens on this computer, thanks.

Fresh installing the Fall Creators Update is a recipe for disaster. If you do, get ready for the State Repository Service to run your CPU at 100%. The settings menu also broke completely for me; it just hangs on the animation splash.

None of these problems occur if you upgrade, so I wasted two hours last night finding, downloading, and reinstalling the previous Creators Update.

Simply do not connect the computer to the network or internet until you are at the desktop during a clean install. Yes, it should not have to be done but that will take care of all the issues you mentioned above.

I've not only installed the FCU clean on a few of my own computers, but we've been installing it since release day at work cleanly, around 50 or so installs since last month, and I've never seen this problem.

The benefit is that you risk your computer to drive-by infections that spread through mail :)

The benefit is that it is another option that a person can use if they want. Otherwise, what you said is simply wrong.

I did a fresh iso install of the Fall Creator's Update a few days back...it's definitely the best and most stable of any of the big W10 updates thus far

I no longer recommend a fresh install due to the simple fact that if something breaks (there's no point denying the truth, Windows 10's updating process doesn't have a good track record) you loose the ability to uninstall individual components within the update or even rollback entirely due to the fact you bypassed the [cough] updater.

Best to let the updater break things, at least you have more options available to you in the event of issues than simply reinstalling the whole OS for an older version - Unless you like taking OS images every time you update.

I use the Win10 Mail app at work. I prefer a standalone app personally, and since it has HiDPI it looks nice on my 17" 4K laptop. I also have access to multiple mailboxes in one app, and the Mail app has supported a combined Inbox for some time.

I can't think of a modern mail client that doesn't support HiDPI?

on my laptop the fall creators update fails to install.
windows update downloads and prepares the update but during the re-boot the machine gets stuck at the logo. ( the animated circle does not appear at all )

only defender, no additional av software is used.
when i manually re start the laptop it loads the previous windows 10 version, then the automatic update loads the fcu and the problem starts again during the re-boot process.

now i have to find a fix for an update i do not need or want :(

How good is the Windows updating process...[Not]!

The only thing I can think of is that you manually download the update and apply it manually just in case the Windows updater downloaded a corrupted file. I have to say, based on recent experience with applying updates manually it's something I wouldn't normally recommend due to the fact that if anything goes catastrophically wrong you cannot roll back, but sometimes you simply have no option - Perhaps take an image of your current install first?

This idea of Windows as a rolling release based around the limitations of the NT kernel is a bloody joke.

Download and install it using the Media Creation tool, that might take care of it. Also, disconnect any external hardware and also run a check disk on your main drive. Hope that helps.

Dude, whether something goes wrong through the updates process or using the Media Creation tool, rolling back will be the same.

try doing an update reset. open an admin command prompt or PowerShell. type: net stop wuauserv. go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and delete everything. reboot and try again.

When you update outside the updater and go to 'View Installed Update History', there's nothing there, because you didn't update via the updater. Furthermore, when you go to recovery in an attempt to rollback your PC in the event of an issue, the updater will claim that such a process is not possible as, once again, you bypassed the updater.

This is a situation that I did not imagine.
